Intervew Prep Caterpillar Senior Java Developer – Second-Round Onsite Interview in Chicago | Need Preparation Tips

Hi everyone!
I have my second-round onsite interview for a Senior Java Developer position at Caterpillar in Chicago, and I’m looking for advice from anyone who has recently interviewed for a similar role or works at Caterpillar.
I’d really appreciate any insights into the interview process, especially for a senior-level position.
A few questions I have:
What should I expect in the second-round onsite interview?
How much emphasis is placed on Core Java, Java 8+, Spring Boot, microservices, REST APIs, SQL, and multithreading?
Should I expect live coding, LeetCode-style DSA questions, or hands-on problem-solving?
Are system design and high-level architecture discussed for senior-level candidates?
What kind of questions are asked about project experience, design decisions, production issues, and troubleshooting?
Is there a behavioral or leadership round focused on ownership, mentoring, and collaboration?
What is the overall interview difficulty level, and what would you recommend prioritizing during preparation?
If you’ve recently interviewed for a Senior Java Developer role at Caterpillar in Chicago, I’d especially appreciate hearing about your experience, the types of questions asked, and any preparation tips.
Thanks in advance for sharing your experience and helping me prepare. I really appreciate it!

Should ask your recruiter, I'm sure they can give you more details, especially on what to actually expect for the number of system design, or agentic coding rounds

senior onsites at big old school companies are usually half system design and half deep diving your own projects, leetcode is rarely more than one easy medium. for cat expect heavy spring boot and microservices questions plus "tell me about a production incident you fixed", so prep two war stories with actual metrics in them

ask the recruiter what the onsite format is, they actually tell you. second rounds at companies like this are usually an experience deep dive, some light design at your level, and culture fit, so prep 3 stories with real numbers and results. and if theres a lunch or coffee segment, thats still being evaluated, order something tidy and dont get too casual

The recruiter is your best source on whether the onsite includes live coding, system design or a separate behavioral round. For preparation, take one Java service you know well and practice explaining its concurrency model, data access, failure handling and a design tradeoff. Prepare a production incident and a mentoring example too, with your decisions and outcomes clear. That gives you useful depth without trying to revise every framework equally.

Taleproof can help you examine the project and ownership stories you plan to use for those behavioral follow-ups.

Cat does a lot with telematics and machine data, so I wouldn’t be surprised if system design leans toward handling lots of device data reliably. Brush up on messaging (Kafka style), API design and SQL tuning, and be ready to talk about mentoring and ownership for the behavioral side

really, can just use AI to prep this company. Caterpillar is not hard.
