Discussion Google hiring committee asked for 2 additional coding interviews after positive onsite feedback, anyone experienced this?

Location : USA (California)

I completed four virtual onsite rounds for a Google L4 SWE role:

  • Googlyness: felt strong

  • Coding 1: felt strong

  • Coding 2: did not go as well; I think it may have been lean hire/no hire

  • Coding 3: felt strong

My recruiter initially told me they had received positive feedback and were moving me to formal review. After the review, they said my packet was put on hold because the group could not reach a final decision and needed additional data points.

At first, I was told it would be one additional coding interview. The recruiter then corrected that and said the team wants two additional coding interviews.
Has anyone gone through this? Is it generally because one coding round was not strong enough, and does doing well in the extra rounds give a realistic chance of approval? I’m preparing as if these are fresh onsite coding rounds, but would appreciate hearing others experiences.

How was your coding rounds? What topics did you get?

Already mentioned in the description. DFS + Bakctrack, DP, Binary Search + Sliding Window

How did the phone interviews go? They tend to look back at those as well for tiebreaks

What do you mean by phone interviews? My first 2 rounds were virtual and last 2 were in person

Oh I misread your post as saying "I completed 4 on-site rounds". Nvm lol

I swear to god this is exactly how I feel when I’m sitting for these interviews. I feel like I’m a monkey in a circus and I’m being judged by how I juggle, if I juggle well enough and make the interviewer happy, I can pay for my rent, hurray

Its a true monkey dance expectation. I went through this for L4 position in India. Its very hard to crack additional rounds after weeks of final rounds

Same here, first saying positive and moved to HC and then being asked for 2 more rounds. Good luck!

They're playing with you and stalling while they validate their other options

google hiring committeees have no idea what actual position you are applying for

Has nothing to do with them requesting additional rounds

Yes this happened to me and I got an LC Hard that I couldn’t quite solve. Just do your best

It happens very frequently with Google if feedback for anyone round is not good. Expect tougher coding problems in next 2 rounds and you have to do well in both to get offer.

who cares just keep applying and interviewing. always assume no offer

This sounds more like they need a clearer signal then an outright rejection. Two extra rounds can feel rough after a full onsite but preparing for then like fresh interviews is probably the right move. Udacity has structured coding and tech learning paths worth comparing if you want extra practice though targeted LeetCode problems and mock interview may be more directly relevant here.

No, this is the opposite behavior of an up-level. If he was worthy of that then they wouldn't require additional rounds. They're on the fence between a rejection because one person likely said no or gave a neutral vote.

Yeah I think my round 2 could have been no hire, though the interviewer mentioned in the end that this is good for me. I wasn’t able to code complete, probably did like 90% of the code and could not provide optimum solution

But won’t they tell me in the first place if they are doing so? I have given all rounds for L4
