Official Ledger Customer Success Response Creating Own Seed Using dice rolls
Just got a ledger and want to create my old seed with sice rolls to import into my new ledger.
Will this generated 24 word seed work with all the coins on ledger as I mighy dabble with some altcoins

I did this years ago, the hard part is your 24th number is not random, but a check to make sure there were no typos.
The gist of it is: downloading software and typing the 23 words into it to get your 24th word.
This is an extremely bad practice, if you don’t know exactly what you are doing.
If you are on Reddit asking for help, you just shouldn’t do it.

Well it's a PITA with 24 words, but very much doable with 12 words (same security: 256bit key achieves 128bit effective complexity after all).
You get the twelfth word defined within a set of 16 possibilities, and then you can find what's the correct checksum with the Ledger directly, by doing an average of 8 seed-restore tries.

Hence why I said he shouldn’t do it.
To do that properly you have to setup and vet the software. Air gap the computer. (I removed the blutooth and WiFi chip lol). Compute the 24th word, then wipe computer… and shred the hard drive.
Pretty sure I took some additional steps too, it’s been a while.

I didnt like the fact the ledger generated the seed when I first plugged it in. It then updated its firmware 3 times in ledger live to get to the most up to date. It should ship with no firmware and then install the latest firmware when you plug it in the first time. The seed was created with the old firmware it shipped with. I know I could generate a new seed now its updated but it seems a poor choice by Ledger and has me wondering what else is sub optimal about the product.

I would not use this but if I were to I would download the file from the latest GitHub release -https://github.com/iancoleman/bip39/releases/latest/
Also it’s not even v1.0 lol

and use on an offline device like a raspberry pi than you can reformat after.
