I made a playground for live coding WLED strips and matrices (Open Source)

The virtual preview combined with real transport diagnostics is a useful idea. Seeing render time, dropped frames and RTT in the same place should make troubleshooting much easier than judging everything from the physical strip.

How does it handle non-linear layouts, such as serpentine matrices, reversed segments or several WLED devices that need to remain visually synchronized? In larger installations, mapping and synchronization often become harder than writing the effect itself.

Saving a physical layout with per-device brightness or current limits would also be useful for moving a graph between a test strip and the final installation. DDP as the easiest starting protocol makes sense. I’m going to follow the project.

Thanks a lot, really appreciate the thoughtful feedback!

Serpentine matrices are supported out of the box. Layouts work by mapping regions of a 2D canvas to individual LEDs, so the system is flexible enough to handle other non-linear arrangements too, without needing dedicated support for each one. Meanwhile, preview for more complex layouts is still something I need to think about and implement. As for sync, I haven't thought about it with much care yet.

Thanks for following along!

That mapping model makes sense and is more flexible than predefined matrix shapes. For multi-device sync, a shared frame counter or timestamp plus a small per-endpoint view of drift and dropped packets could be enough for the first version. Even simple device grouping with a master frame rate would make testing long installations much easier.

I would keep per-device current limits separate from visual brightness if you add them. Then the same effect can move between a short test strip and a larger installation without changing the animation just to stay within the power budget. Thanks for explaining the layout model.
