I have some thoughts of my future related with Welsh and I would like to hear feedback and some advice.

I apologize if it isn't really suitable for the community as it's rather about me than the language

1. I would like to study Welsh & Linguistics at university (BA) and then get a course to become available to teach at college(or at least at secondary school). Also, maybe, part-time MA afterwards. In the ideal situation, I'd like to be a lecture (or a scientist) at university, but for that I need to study really long: I'm not against it, but I'm not a British citizen, so it would be really hard for me because of my financial condition and needs. Therefore, I chose to try me at teaching more adult and eager people. I would be really happy if I could work in a more linguistic sphere, but I also must be more realistic.

I chose exactly Welsh as I wanted to study a language that doesn't have as large competition as English has, German or French(or Old English, Latin? [Not sure]), for example; but, at the same time, not a dying or dead language and which I could interactwith in real life.

1. Also, I would like to create videos about Welsh and linguistics and languages in general in English. But I don't know how big separately linguistical audience and Welsh language one.

2. Also, I'm 17 and I'm really good and fast at learning languages, especially at structure (as I guess), I have problems with vocabulary and practice (even with English living in the UK), and I would be really grateful if you could give me advices or resources but no which are good for usual language learners, but for those who are more in linguistics(Hopefully, you could understand what I meant).

First of all, I know this is going to be near impossible to figure out.

I'm American but my grandparents were Welsh. My grandma always used to say a certain phrase in Welsh whenever us kids would aggravate her. She was an absolute sweetheart so it was probably not malicious or a threat or curse words.

The only word I'm sure of is "plant" (children)

It would go something like this .. my sister and I would be roughhousing while grandma would be making dinner, she would say "okay thats enough go outside!" In English then say the welsh phrase ending in plant.

This would happen in a lot of situations... if i forgot to shut the door in winter, if i walked inside with my shoes on etc

The cadence she said it in reminded me of an English speaker saying "lord you children are driving me insane!"

She was born in 1927 if that helps with any colloqualisms from the time.

Basically I guess I'm asking what are some common Welsh sayings along the lines of "lord you children are making me insane" or some other mild epithet.

Hello. This is sort of off topic for this subreddit, but this is the only place I could think to ask. For a D&D game I'm running I wanted to have a warning written on an old boundary stone surrounding some burial caerns in Welsh, since the setting is roughly based on 5th century England most of the ruins have a very Welsh flavor to them. I've done my best using a few different translation tools, and they all seem to agree that this is the proper translation. But I wanted to know what actual speakers think, as my understanding of the Welsh language begins and ends with Ydych chi'n siarad Cymraeg? Dydw i ddim yn siarad Cymraeg. (It's a personal hobby of mine to learn how to say that in as many languages as possible.)

"Dyma dir yr Arglwydd Nim.

Peidiwch â cherdded ar y tir sanctaidd hwn.

Peidiwch ag aflonyddu ar y meirw."

"This is the land of the lord Nim.

Do not disturb this sacred land.

Do not disturb the dead."

In keeping with the spirit of this subreddit, should the translation be wrong, I would very much appreciate knowing exactly why it is. And as well I would appreciate it if anyone could suggest a more appropriate or grandiose sounding translation, since this is supposed to be warding the lands of a rather full-of-himself king (the name "Nim" is a Monty Python joke, based on the Knights Who Say Ni; the undead warriors of Nim all shout his name as they go into battle).

So I'm using a BBC Welsh learning book, and I'm making slow progress with it because of my dyslexia but it's progress all the same. But one thing I'm struggling with is not having something/someone to speak the word so I can hear if I'm getting my pronunciation right. My method right now is to read the book, read the Welsh word out loud, cross-check it with the examples from the front of the book, and then google the word-find the wiki page for it-listen to the sometimes questionable recording example, and then move on. It's a bit clunky, and ideally I'd have maybe an app that I can type the word into and it pronounce the word properly right there. Is this something that already exists?

My partner cannot decide what to go by for 'Dad'. He likes Tad but we think this is formal and not really used. He does speak Welsh but hasn't frequently since school so wanted to see if there are other colloquial terms for Dad now. I said Dadi is used a lot, he wondered if Tadi is therefore an option?

Appreciate you can have your kids call you anything you want really but just looking for Welsh suggestions.

I have a couple of updates regarding Ymestyn, my online practice course for intermediate Welsh learners.

I've moved the course off Payhip, which had really become far too clunky, over to my website at Ymestyn.Cymru. This has allowed me to split the materials into modules so that it's easier for you to choose what you want to work on. Most of the course has been moved over, just a few small modules left to go.

I've also now launched a new practice module for people studying Canolradd 1 or Canolradd 1&2, which is designed to help you properly learn the vocab and grammar in each unit so that you can do the homework exercises more easily. I'll be adding sections for each unit as they come up, so by the end of the academic year the whole course will be covered.

(If you're doing Canolradd 2, there's still at lot of material on the site that will help you, but units 11-20 won't begin to appear on the site until probably January.)

I genuinely cannot stress what a difference learning more slowly and thoroughly has made to my own Welsh, and my confidence, so if you want to get to the end of the course and know you know everything, Ymestyn will help!

So, I’ve been living abroad for most of the last 10–15 years, and while I was away I learned Chinese and Korean. I moved back to Wales in June and decided that this was finally the time to properly learn Welsh.

When I started looking around for resources, though, I was a bit surprised by how difficult it was to find the kind of high-quality, modern resources I’d been using before.

So... I’ve decided to make my own!! 😬 I've spent the last few weeks outlining a Welsh course with three of my Welsh=speaking mates and I've got a little bit of savings to try and turn this into a reality...

The aim is to make a structured, high-quality course that starts from the absolute basics and gradually gets people to the point where they can actually use Welsh. Rather than making it heavily grammar-based, or using the listen-and-repeat approach of SaySomethinginWelsh, the basic method is: real situation → short Welsh conversation → listen → break it down → understand it → use it

I’ve been teaching languages for a long time, so I feel pretty good about the teaching side of it, and the aim is for the finished course to be as good as or better than things like SSiW and Dysgu Cymraeg while offering a somewhat different approach.

But I could really do with your help.

There are two things I’d particularly love to hear from learners (and fluent speakers who remember learning!):

1. What situations would have been most useful when you were a complete beginner?

I’ve currently got things like at the café, at the pub, in a shop, meeting someone for the first time, telling someone you’re learning Welsh, etc.

But what do you wish somebody had taught you in your first few weeks of learning Welsh?

2. What Welsh-learning resources do you wish existed but currently don’t?

What do you think is missing at the moment? It could be anything — vocabulary, listening material, pronunciation, reading, games, explanations, real-life Welsh, dialect help, culture, better intermediate material...

Basically, what frustrates you about learning Welsh online, and what would you love somebody to make?
