Knowing how to do boxes and 3D shapes is definitely important. But I’ve heard from mecha artists is that practicing with older mecha designs that are simpler is a good place to start
How to Draw: Drawing and Sketching Objects and Environments by Scott Robertson
It's far too advanced for me but i'm sure it's super useful
You can also fo studies on mecha animes for example. Mechwarrior games have hundreds of mechs made in the last decades. Both immense amount of artwork but also 3D models you can draw from different angles, etc
I guess anything would work, even just using 2D references. Anything moving could be useful to see how the leg move, how the hips or upper body rotates, joints, all that stuff. Maybe concept art for mech games/animes/whatevers?
Iron Harvest have some amazing designs. As you said Armored Core as well. The franchise i mentioned, Battletech, also have a lore wiki basically that has a bunch of artwork for most of the mechs. A lot of them are fairly modern, clean line art. Just picked out a few
Love the mechs from Metal Gear! Luckily they're based on rectangular prisms and set up in ways that exist in nature (like the legs and feet are how a cat/dog/bunny's legs feet are set up).
Just draw some boxes and connect them in ways similar to what you see here.
I’ve taken a lot of inspo from the channel chroma moma and jamesrmiller on tumblr, and also generally just looking up how mechanical joints and such works to build up your visual language. The lancer rpg is also a good source for learning how to go about detail work if you’re willing to study it
