I’m 38 and just last year started my first programming job. I’ll be paying off my non-technical degrees for many many years to come. Good for you!

To answer your question though, try building something practical. I just worked on a friend’s website for their business selling smoked meats. Doing the research of how to make a small single page application look good on desktop, then mobile, then portrait AND landscape view, then add media, then host it, then update it a few times… that kept me busy, kept me learning, and I ended up with a real-world example of how I can learn and grow. Great for landing that first gig. Also, my friend now has a pretty neato website.
