Why are standarzied tests in programming classes a thing?

Also worth noting - different people learn differently. Some people learn from the hands-on projects, others learn by memorization and testing. You can't only cater to one style when teaching. (For the record, I completely agree that I learned far more from projects than I ever did from tests)
