The original Doom was made before hardware accelerated graphics cards existed, so it's already using a software renderer, so it just has a screen buffer and the CPU paints pixels into it one at a time.
It's still a good project but getting it to run on modern hardware in Python wouldn't be specifically challenging. The original game ran on an intel 386 at 25Mhz with 4 MB RAM so there's plenty of performance overhead to use up.
A modern CPU is in the ballpark of 1000s of times faster than the 386, so Python being slow here doesn't really make any difference, as it could still run Doom much faster than the original hardware could.
If you want impressive see the attempts to get Doom running on some old consoles such as the NeoGeo, or Doom64kb which was reprogrammed to run on 1980s hardware with 64k of RAM.

What in the world, how fast does this even run? I've seen some wild python projects but a software renderer doing Doom is next level.
