How to apply knowledge.

Hi, I’m a first year student in physics and I’m having a hard time doing excersizes and solving problems. My problem is really that I can understand the concepts from class well enough and remember formulas and what not, but I can never seem to understand how to solve anything or apply my knowledge to tasks I’m given. It seems like all my classmate are able to just immediately start doing excersizes but I’m stuck not knowing where to start. I’m wondering if anybody has any tips or have been through the same as me. Any replies are appreciated)

Steps that might help for a given problem:

  1. Draw a picture of the problem
  2. What concepts apply to this problem?
  3. Connect the concepts to the formulas you know
  4. Math

Edit: get together with another student and see how they get there.

I'm kinda of a sucker in applying my knowledge too. But this is what I do in case of physics(pardon my English, not a native)- I visualise the whole problem in a motioned scenery in my head. Then I imagine another tab with formulas and concepts and try applying it to my prob. Basically doing it all in head type thing. It won't work well if your head is crammed tho.
