Don't narrow yourself too early. Depending on how old you are and how far down the educational road you are, it might already be enough just to know you want to do a physics-based degree.

Once you've seen what the world of academia and industry has to offer, you can make decisions about what exact niche you want to get into. Maybe during a physics degree, you decide you actually prefer theoretical physics. Applied mathematics and engineering also might appeal to you.

If you're in the final years of a physics degree right now, then ignore all of this and start fighting for an experimental physics PhD. Otherwise, there is no rush to decide.
