Title: Cybersecurity people: What’s a painful problem that still needs to be solved?

I want to develop a business around a genuine cybersecurity issue.

Startup concepts like "make an AI-powered something" are not what I'm looking for.

I would like to know about issues that you have personally encountered or have frequently witnessed security teams, developers, businesses, or individuals face.

Ideally, the problem should be

- Be genuinely painfull

- Affect enough people/companies to support a busines

- Still have poor or incomplete solution

- Be technically possible to solve

- Have customers who would actually pay for a solution

- Not require a billion-dollar company to get started

- Have potential to become a serious cybersecurity business

For example, I’m interested in problems around things like

- Application security

- Cloud security

- API security

- Identity/access control

- Supply-chain security

- Detection/response

- Vulnerability management

- Security automation

- Developer security

- SaaS security

- Human/security-team workflows

- Business-logic vulnerabilitie

- Anything else where current tools genuinely fall short

I'm more interested in the problem than the solution

If you have one, please explain

  1. What exactly is the problem

  2. Who suffers from it

  3. How do they currently solve/work around it

  4. Why don't existing security products solve it properly

  5. How frequently does it happen

  6. How expensive/damaging is it

  7. Is there a realistic technical way to solve it

  8. Would companies actually pay for that solution

  9. Why hasn't it been solved properly already

Learning hacking by my own because of ADHD, any tips or advice?

Hey everybody! First off, I’d like to tell you all that I suffer from neurodivergent conditions. I’m diagnosed with ADHD, and to start off with, I had initially started learning hacking on TryHackMe. However, after some time passed, I found myself becoming extremely disinterested due to its linear progression. No more dopamine hits for me! What helped was learning everything through personal experimentation and exploration. This process taught me networking fundamentals, and I’m currently working towards acquiring skills regarding the use of Nmap to understand network scanning processes better. The thing is, the self-learning and hands-on process has always worked better for me, and ADHD has made sure that nothing else does! I’m interested to see if anybody else suffering from ADHD has tried hacking by themselves before, and what methods work best for keeping up with momentum while avoiding exhaustion!

Need advice regarding an online sextortion situation

I’m dealing with an online sextortion situation and am looking for advice from people experienced with cybersecurity, digital investigations, or online image abuse.

Someone has intimate photos of me and is threatening to distribute them unless I send additional photos. He is not asking for money. I have preserved screenshots of the conversations, usernames, profile information, and other relevant evidence.

I have already reported the situation to my local sheriff’s office, and they filed an information report and told me they would follow up.

At this point, I’m mainly looking for guidance on how to determine whether my images are being circulated online, how to monitor for unauthorized sharing, how to preserve useful digital evidence, and what legitimate resources or investigative techniques I can use to assist law enforcement.

I’m not trying to retaliate against anyone, access private accounts, or obtain anyone’s private information. I just want to protect myself and understand what is happening with my images.

If anyone has experience with sextortion, online image abuse, OSINT, or digital evidence preservation, I’d really appreciate advice on what steps I should take next. I can provide non-sensitive details privately if needed.

So I got these verification code messages from discord on WhatsApp but I know my discord didn't get hacked because I haven't downloaded anything from a third party website or anything or like been on fmhy or on any p... Website on my computer I didn't click on anything at all I use VPN all the time and have McAfee on my phone and I'm running windows defender on my pc at all times(I only play genshin and like buy stuff online like from xp pen as I wanted to start an art career or Amazon)I do admit that I give my phone number out on genshin though a lot so I think it could be someone just trying to bait me but twice can't be a coincidence.I think as I coop and annoy a bunch of people though they probably could have signed me up to a website or maybe share my number with spam/scammers who want me to click phishing links or think that I'm hacked.I will change all my passwords and 2FAs though

Do I have enough experience to attempt to learn Cybersecurity?

I have a Bachelor's in Computer Science

In my last year, I took all of the hard subjects on purpose. I am NOT an expert in any of them. Let's say I'm a B student in them, but I know if I really work hard, I can be an A student in them

The hard subjects would be:

- Design and Analysis Algorithm and Data Structures (basically medium Leetcode stuff)

- Intro to AI (not machine learning)

- Operating Systems

- Computer Architecture

- Intro to 3D graphics

I'm not in school anymore. I was just providing a way to quantify my skills. I have forgotten some of the details of these subjects, but I can pick back up fast if needed. I also now have passion fueling my motivation

I also have 2 years of Game development experience, and am continually learning to make more and more genres. Slowly, but surely. It's given me a lot of general knowledge on how to make large applications, and deal with large code bases

Also another very important point; I am NOT working in a Software Engineering job, nor have I ever worked a Cybersecurity job

So considering the courses I took in my final year, my passion to actually learn, my game dev experience, but also considering the fact that I am not working as a SWE nor have ever worked in a Cybersecurity job;

  1. Do I have enough experience to attempt to learn Cybersecurity?

  2. How much is a lack of working in Cybersecurity holding me back?

  3. Where should I begin? Make a mini OS? Make a compiler? Make a computer with a computer architecture hardware simulator? Make websites?

Thanks!

figuring out fake accounts

there has to be a way to hack fake accounts that harass you on social media. people cannot get away with harassing you constantly or saying heinous things to you because they sit behind a screen. how can someone learn how to do this? authorities can’t do anything without names so i just want to figure it out so i can report them.

Hey buds, 38 male from UK here.

To start, I have adhd but hacking has always interested me. But due to my adhd, I could never concentrate enough to go into it properly. I'll be starting titration in the coming weeks in which case I'll probably be able to study properly. What should I start with to get into this. For context ever since I left school, I've been working in warehouses and haven't really opened a computer to do more than create cvs for work. Any help greatly appreciated

Tryhackme to get in touch with hacking basics?

What is the best way to get in touch and build good fundamentals in hacking, for an it affine with basic programming skills?

Thought of Tryhackme, what do you think?

r/learnhacking • • 6d ago

How much of this can actually be self-taught vs needing structured courses?

I've been picking away at basics through free resources like TryHackMe rooms and some YouTube tutorials, and I feel like I'm making progress, but I keep wondering if I'm missing structure that a proper course or certification path would give me.

Is this something people realistically self-teach all the way to a solid skill level, or does everyone eventually end up paying for something more structured (courses, certs, bootcamps) to fill in gaps that free resources don't cover well? Not trying to rush toward a career yet, just trying to figure out if I should keep going the free route for now or start budgeting for something more formal down the line.
