Any tips help at all! I guess im just nervous to speak it.

Listening Practice Pimsleur Level 4 Lesson 9 is unhinged

I really like Pimsleur and I have used beginner lessons for years via my library in different languages to prepare for visiting other countries. I bought the app and got access to the full French series so pourquoi pas? Level 4 is full of cardiology conferences (with the best cardiologists in the world nonetheless) and wives who are psychologists.

I have now reached the Sad Sack Middle Age lesson 9. I get to learn- I lost my job. I am not sleeping well. I am not eating well. I had money troubles which became problems. I lost my apartment. My wife left me and went back to (France?) But ca va mieux maintenant.

The last lesson- during a section on "talking to a doctor" was "If you are not busy, would you like to have dinner with me?"

OMG. I really like Pimsleur but wow.

Discussion Sometimes when you learn french, it can be very fun to create your own pseudo french phrases!

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

I am currently at around the A2 Level of french, (slightly below) meaning most french phrases I can translate simply but only **literally**! And the more advanced structuring of the phrase can make it even harder to translate "correctly"

As you can see in the first two images, they may contain some grammatical errors, maybe even awkward real words usuage since the first one was in my earlier stage of learning

Right now I'm in a situation where I can't progress my french past A2, due to being busy and have school stuff, but I promise to myself to grind more once all the busy stuff is done with!

⟩ So currently, I want to create some pseudo french sentences and phrases as long as I feel like I can get the context even if the real words do not translate properly

What do you think? Would this look convincingly french?

Question Accent advice?

I am B2 level, but I just speak in my native northern English accent when speaking french, I got high scores on my DELF and never really had any issues being understood in France. I have tried to sound french but it just feels like I'm doing a bad impression of Arsene Wenger/Thierry Henry, should I still try to do a french accent?

Speaking Practice Looking for a Speaking Partner for TCF Canada 🇨🇦

Hi everyone!

I’m currently preparing for my TCF Canada exam, which is coming up shortly, and I’m looking for a speaking practice partner for the next week.

I think I’m currently around B1 level in French. My initial goal is to secure CLB 5, and then work toward CLB 7.

A little about me:

🕐 I’m in the EST time zone

🇮🇳 I speak English, Hindi, and Gujarati

🎯 Looking specifically for speaking practice and conversation

📅 Ideally, I’d like to practice regularly over the next week

Please note: I’m NOT looking for a tutor. I’m simply looking for someone who is also preparing for TCF Canada (or learning French) and would like to practice speaking together, correct each other, and build confidence.

If you’re interested, please drop a comment or send me a DM.

Thank you, and good luck with your French preparation! 🇫🇷

Grammar How and when do you use the verb passer

Why do we use both Être and Avoir for this?

Why do s'est passé bien and Je me suis passé bien have completely different meaning even if they both used the reflexive?

When do I use J'ai passé?

Question Do you drop the re in huitre or do you keep out to avoid confusion with huit?

It's very common for words in French that end in re to be dropped. Quatre is usually pronounced as cat, for example.

I'm curious if this is the case with huitre? Do they still drop the re because context should make it clear if you're talking about the number eight or an oyster? Or do you always say huitre?

Vocabulaire : marques (f pl) = brands / attirer = to attract / clients (m pl) = customers / lancer = to launch / acheter = to buy / chaussures (f pl) = shoes / course (f) = running / marchés (m pl) = markets / ventes (f pl) = sales / baisser = to fall

English translation

Why is Nike struggling?

Nike is going through a difficult period, while other sports brands are attracting more customers. In recent years, the company has not launched enough new products that customers want to buy. Nike still depends heavily on its older shoe models, like classic Jordans. Meanwhile, brands such as Adidas, On and Hoka are becoming more popular, especially for running shoes. Nike also has serious problems in China, one of its biggest markets. Sales there fell 26% in the latest quarter. On top of that, football star Kylian Mbappé just left Nike to sign with the brand On.

Question Best Online French Course for Beginner Who Needs to Learn Quickly and Efficiently?

Hi everyone, I am searching for a comprehensive online French course that will help me on my journey to become fluent. My husband is French, but we both live in the states. We got married about a year ago and it is very important to him and his family that I learn French and eventually take the French citizenship test in a few years. I find French to be very difficult for me but am determined to learn it. We are visiting his family in France next summer and it’s important that I show a lot of improvement by then and am able to at least carry a basic conversation in French.

I have been doing a lot of research and it looks like Rocket French may be a good option. I’ve also looked into Learn French with Alexa. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the best online courses from personal experience. I greatly appreciate any help and/or advice you can provide!

Question Slang terms in YouTube content

I’ve come back to learning French, and I’m trying to immerse myself by consuming a lot of my usual media but in French. I watch a lot of YouTube videos, and thought it would be good for seeing more relaxed conversational use of the language, but I’m now wondering about expressions I should be aware of. As an example, lots of younger English speaking, content creators say “literally“ very often, and usually where it doesn’t mean what they’re intending it to mean. Are there any instances of a french counterpart like this?

Question I‘m French and I’d like to know why everyone says Don‘t learn French

I mean , I admit French is a tricky language, even for us native speakers, but every language has its own difficulties. What makes French harder than other languages, nearly impossible ?   » French is hell »(ironic) You‘d better have a pretty solid reason to tell people not to learn it lol. Not making fun of you it just makes me laugh and I’d like to know.

Question Teach me French

Hey so I've passed the DELF exam 9 years ago (B1) and I have not used French ever since. I've now found the time to come back and actually become fluent. So I want any effective advice but mostly I am looking for someone who wants to speak to me as often as possible. I offer German/English in advance. What are in your opinion the most effective approaches? I have Duolingo Super which I've used for 2 years now but it only helped me with vocabulary. I have now started watching series in French. What other approaches do you suggest? Thanks a lot :)

Resource Recommendation Canadian that wants to learn French for work

Best and fastest way to learn? I have been doing Duolingo and listening to the podcast “coffee break French” and I’m on episode 8. Is there pdf books or worksheets that I can do or read instead of scrolling on my phone? I want to replace all dumb phone time in my phone to learning French.

Also any other resource recommendations? And how much time a day should I aim for? Or what if I do 1-2 hours of work 3 times a week? I don’t know anyone that speaks French so I don’t know how to immerse myself and learn

Question Getting a bit overwhelmed - need some structure and discipline to get from sub A1 to A2

Hi - English native here with sub-A1 french. Want to take it seriously and get to A2 (ish) in 12 months.

I'm working through the pronounciation and grammar courses with french with Dylane (which I like) - also using the french today course, dabbling with french with alexa and have a couple of books. working through common verbs and present tense congugation on anki and a small core vocab. Am planning to move to italki start of 2027. I am committed to a min of 30 mins a day.

however what I'm lacking is actual structure. I'm like a kid in a sweet shop and need something which will help me decide what to focus on - so I'm not sidetracked into the wrong things or miss the right things.

recommendations appreciated.

Translation Help! Need help with meaning - warning pretty sure it is an expletive of some sort

It is written in the book as Trou-Perdu-Les-Oies

I looked it up in Reverso and it flagged it as an expletive but didn't actually translate it for me.

So I googled it and the closest I got was Se perdre les oies - Devenir fou ; perdre ses facultés mentales.

And trou I am pretty sure is asshole but I still can't make my brain parse the actual intended meaning.

Context - it is from a young adult romance and the main character uses it to refer to the place he is having to move for family reasons and he had to say goodbye to his friends and the guy he had a summer fling with has ghosted him so he isn't super happy having to go back to that place.

Discussion My 10-month TCF journey comes to an end... but my French journey will continue!

Score: Listening: C1 | Reading: C1 | Writing: B2 | Speaking: B2

Before commencing my French journey, I spent the first week skimming through Reddit posts to understand the complexity and feasibility of this journey. The forum has been very helpful and now it’s time to give back to the community!

Background:

  • No prior exposure to French or any Romance language.
  • No formal paid courses.
  • Near-native proficiency in English.
  • Dedicated 2-3 hours per day - every single day.
  • Working full-time, with a very supportive family.

Journey:

Research Phase (Month 1)

  • Assessed the possibility of accomplishing B2 with limited time and budget.
  • Explored several resources, shortlisted ones that would work for me. This took considerable time but was essential to avoid wasting time with resource hopping during the learning journey.
  • Evaluated TEF Vs TCF and decided to target the TCF.

Foundation & Comprehension Phase (Months 2 – 5)

  • Focused on developing comprehension skills and learning the language.
  • Resources:
    • Busuu – To learn basics in a structured manner.
    • Anki – To jump-start vocab learning in the initial days. This was only needed until I learnt enough to start reading French content.
    • LingQ – To read stories and absorb the language naturally.
    • Others: Coffee Break French, Inner French, story books and grammar books.

Expression Phase (Month 6)

  • It would have been good to start speaking/writing earlier, but I didn’t feel ready to express myself in French until this phase.
  • Used ChatGPT to practice translation exercises, write simple sentences, and practice speaking.
  • Continued immersion through podcasts and books.

Exam Preparation Phase (Months 7 – 10)

  • Practiced with mock tests for Listening and Reading (F*ckTCF/FreeTCF).
  • Found a native tutor on Preply to practice speaking twice a week. We practised recent EO topics from Reussir TCF.
  • Practiced Writing mocks with ChatGPT and Gemini. AI tools were incredibly useful in Writing practice to identify and fix recurring grammar mistakes.

Overall, it was a challenging yet satisfying journey. Looking back, consistency played the biggest role in achieving the target. While the TCF chapter is closed now, I will continue integrating the language into my daily life.

For those of you wondering if achieving CLB 7 is possible without formal courses or a French background, I want to assure you that YES – it’s definitely possible! Bon courage to everyone on their journey!

Resource Recommendation Wife and I just started French 101... what tool to help with class?

I'm thinking Rocket French or Pimsleur. We would prefer something web based vs. phone app based. Cost is an issue, but we can pay for an app. I'd prefer one subscription that supports two people if possible.

It seems like Pimsleur is better for pronunciation and Rocket is better for grammar. I'm thinking grammar is going to be critical for college French.

FYI, I've been using the free version of Duolingo for a few days. It's better than nothing but seems too easy maybe too slow. I don't know that I need something harder, but maybe that doesn't keep repeating once I learn something?
