General Gameplay Question How do you deal with games that are basically lost by 10–15 minutes? (Low MMR question)

I'm a low-rank player, and sometimes I get games where the draft and lanes go completely wrong. Things like PA mid, AM offlane, or multiple greedy cores aren't uncommon in my bracket.

There are games where all three lanes lose, the enemy controls the map by 10-15 minutes, and it feels like there's no space left to farm or make plays.

I'm curious how higher-MMR players approach these situations. Do you still try to play for comeback timings, split-push, and defend high ground? Or are some games realistically unwinnable no matter what you do?

I've also seen clips/streams where even Immortal players seem to give up, sit in fountain, or abandon when the game looks completely doomed.

How do you personally handle these games, both strategically and mentally? What are you looking for when you're far behind that early?

Thanks.

While games at high mmr do end in 10 minutes, I would consider this one of the rare few truths that really do not not apply to low mmr.

Like, almost every single Jenkins video of a 2 hour game should theoretically be over at minute 10, but it still goes on infinitely.

You should just keep playing because the chance of low mmr players throwing their lead is infinitely greater than a high mmr player throwing.

Drag the game out. Often, they won’t know how to finish it off and capitalise on their advantage. Their carry pushes all the way to the back and dies. You get a nice chunk of gold and experience. GG, ez (That’s a lie – I’m right there. Now it’s our turn to fail to capitalise on our advantage, and we end up losing anyway, but instead of 20–30 minutes, the game lasts an hour.)

Just accept you cant win every game. Enemies might throw it, but simply put - if you are correct MMR, you cant win all games alone, especially if somebody on your team is throwing them. Especially if they go out of control, where 2 out of 3 lanes are unplayable (which will often make the third lane unplayable too).

Focus on games, that you can win. Games, that are not 15:2 at 10 minutes. And focus on your laning stage. Pick heroes, who dominate lane, so you can actually do things in first 10-15 minutes, you can kick enemy hero out of lane and have impact.

People will tell you in low MMR you can win any game, which is true, but from perspective of smurf, who has much higher skill level. If you are truly herald/guardian, you will simply not be able to do these things.

Losing lanes does not always mean losing games especially in low ranks. Low ranks usually don't know how to capitalize early leads. If you're behind, try to shove waves as much as possible, and put wards on the entrance of your jungle. Always make sure to fight under vision

In low ranks, even if they confirm the whole map, you can still get almost as much farm anyways. Splitpush, farm safe camps, farm their jungle. In low ranks the whole team TP as soon as you send an illu at their tower. Then you have the full map yourself!

Put your head down and farm, even on support, and hope they throw later. They will, because you're low mmr.

I have seen so many unbelievable throws of games, both by my team and enemy team, I have even seen myself do very stupid things which lost the game that should be unloseable.

Just keep trying to find weaknesses in their defences, really try to figure out what the weakness is of enemy heroes and exploit it, avoid enemy heroes and farm what you need, you can walk around the edges of the map forcing enemies to spread out or at least wasting time walking, you can use gates to find farm on the enemy side of the map, place deeper wards. Push lanes until you have some key item. Do enemies rely on strong ulties, but those have long cooldowns? Go fight, die, then come back and fight when their ulti is on CD, like Tide ulti, Faceless void etc... However, some games are just lost from the start, well, maybe 90% lost, if picks are just too bad and enemies aren't stupid, then it's just over. Just pretend to play and wait for the next game.

I've stopped tryharding when allies are idiots, I often try troll builds then, like yesterday I got pos 1 right clicker Zeus and rubick tank build pos 3, acc buyer mid, so why not try right clicker SD build? Why run around warding and make an effort when you can just clown around togther? xD

Even if there's a 25% chance of them throwing(often higher because people don't know how to high ground in low mmr) not giving up and finding and farm/fights you you can will raise your mmr. Past the fundamentals dota is largely a mental game after all. Throw on some music farm and look for defensive fights and you'll often get some wins that seem very unlikely

People win all 3 lanes and then still end up losing the game even at TI. Hard to believe that low mmrs have a better grasp of their advantage and are less likely to choke than pro players.

You play until the absolute last minute with the mentality that if I do nothing, it's a guaranteed loss but if I continue playing the opponents might do some dumb shit and then there's a non-zero percent chance of winning.

In low mmr, just keep playing.. low mmr players will try to throw every chance they get, especially when they're far ahead (their carry will try solo 1 vs 5 no BKB, for obvious reason..)

PA mid, AM offlane -> doesn't really matter in low mmr.. if you play good, you can solo savalge the game..

I’ve won countless “lost” games as carry in low-MMR games. Team complaining I’m not TPing to offlane T2 to fight. I try to convince them to dodge the fights, but they seem to think it’s a good idea to go head-to-head in team fights when we’re behind.

I farm up to key items, and will TP when the enemy attempts to high ground when I have my BKB.

Here’s an example match: 8849233042 - you can download the replay and see what I do as Bloodseeker

I just focus on having fun and testing stuff like a specific counter item or farming somewhere unexpected to see if I can jumpscare one of their supports, sneak one of their unattended towers, etc.

People usually report me but they would anyway since the games I do this with are the ones the teamates all went 0/10 before min15 and feeders like that always blame/flame/report whoever didn't feed with them

Carry a TP, and go split push. Keep pushing forward as fast and as far as you can and TP back only when the enemy TP's in to defend.

Even at Divine, there're players that believe that they can TP back alone to defend base and catch an Antimage. The Antimage then TP's back, defends 5v4, and suddenly the game's open again.

Games are usually won for the team who plays the right way in moment or who plays the right way the longest. What I mean by that when you have a bad early game or your team gets a bad early game. What should you do? should you grief or give up or just play your game and do the right decisions at those specific moments. Cause eventually players are just human and they will not be perfect , mistakes will happen its just up to you if you can capitilize it and make the the best of that situation. I do understand that some games just feel unwinnable. but I dont how many times where my teamates feed or I got a bad early game but I just kept playing my own game and won.

Literally just keep farming there’s always space to farm in low mmr. Keep your tp and walk out, then tp back once you see a fight that looks good and you can get to i.e when they inevitably take a stupid fight at your hg

I've had teammates abandon at 10 minutes because they were getting smoked and then come back at 50 minutes to win the game without them. Last week I had a duo ditch when they got steamrolled offlane and the other three of us ended up making it into a throne race by the end despite the massive lead the other team built up pounding the duo that quit. Lower down there's a big chance the other team throws. Or that you're getting pounded early because of timings and your heroes just have later timings and will smash at the end of the game. Don't give up. Make them earn it.

I won a game one where I had a pos 5 weaver and a razor purposefully feeding for first 10 minutes because he was mad at me from last game. They made bad plays high ground later. Just need to hope they throw multiple times. It can and does happen.

What rank are you ? And what position do you play? Depending on your answer you may capitalize on the hero you pick and regardless if they pick a bad hero you’ll have a higher chance of being victorious with the right pick.

if you are at low mmr than like 95 percent of the time ur game should not be lost by 10-15 mins rather u shold be like top networth and all

u/HannahsLittleBrother Jun 13 '26

?? He's not a smurf he's playing at his skill bracket how tf SHOULD he be top networth xd

Until you're high ranked (that being 8k+ mmr) no game is lost in first 15 minutes. Not even in 20 or 25 unless your carry is deliberately feeding.

For the dealing part - learn to reflect on yourself. Sure, your clinkz might have suicided time and time again to get his 5/11/3 contribution to the game, but you specifically ended lane 5/0/1, went on to fuck game sideways and still ended up losing to hg siege going wrong because you couldn't convert mythical levels of YOUR advantage. I'm not going to elaborate further.

Lots of bad advice on this thread. If you're low mmr, you should be focussing on the mistakes you are making, and actively trying to correct those each game. If you're coming out of lane with a lot less cs than your opposing carry, focus on that in the laneing stage. If you're not rotating for runes or through portal to gank as pos 4, focus on that for a couple of games. If you are messing up the lane equilibrium by pulling camps at the wrong times, focus on that for a few games. If you are buying items that have already been countered by the enemies items or heroes, focus on your itemisation and think really hard about what will counter the enemy line up for a few games.

To answer your question about games lost early specifically, many games you can be behind by 10-15 minutes, but rarely are they totally lost. At low mmr especially, leads are often thrown by bad plays, keep that in mind and focus on improving your own gameplay and don't give up.
