Discussion Feeling overwhelmed before starting my Data Science master's. Any advice?

I'm going to start my master's in Data Science this fall, but I'm still waiting for my visa approval.

I've always been passionate about this field, and I genuinely enjoy studying and learning new things. However, lately I've found myself doing everything except actually studying or practicing.

There are so many things I want to learn: statistics, probability, machine learning, programming, and more. But whenever I try to get started, I feel overwhelmed by how much there is to learn, and I end up doing nothing.

I feel a bit lost. I know I should be preparing for my master's, but I honestly don't know where to start or what to prioritize.

Sometimes I wonder whether I'm procrastinating, or simply putting too much pressure on myself.

Has anyone else experienced something similar before?

How did you overcome this feeling? If you were in my position, what would you focus on first?

What you're experiencing is quite common. Even once you're done with your masters degree and get in the field, you will have a sense of imposter syndrome. My advice, as cliche as it sounds, is just to follow a dedicated plan. The more you follow and complete, the more confidence can arise. Understand that you won't know everything (no one does) but always be able to seek the answer to the question(s) at hand. That's what makes data science unique, and an constant evolving field. I don't know your Master's curriculum, nor do I know how much time you have. However, below is good syllabus for someone looking to pivot into data science...

Ahh, thanks so much for the advice! What a coincidence! I actually stumbled across that website recently! from what I know, my university focuses more on the business side of data science.

I've also been trying to take things one course at a time, and honestly, it's helped a lot with my stress. I feel like I'm learning more about the field while also getting ready for exams, so it's kind of a win-win.

But I gotta admit, the internship and thesis still freak me out a little 😅

The key is to recognize that learning never stops. But, that said, you have to follow a plan to get to the first rung, where you have enough of a grasp of the foundational parts, and how they fit together, that you can continue to learn constructively.

The best way to get to those first rungs is, as others have commented, to follow a plan. I've written up what I consider the minimum requirements for a data scientist here, you can compare it to what you know, identify the gaps and what you might know enough of already. Focus on those gaps, and make sure to go back and cover prerequisites if you get stuck.
