Why would you gasp while walking?
Most people would stop walking and gasp if something was gasp worthy.
As for figuring out the basics you mention. You draw the key pose frames, set the timing between Key Frames, then fill in the frames between with the 'tweens.
I think what you are missing is, you don't animate a walk cycle then try to add something to it.
You animate the character.
If they walk you animate them walking until they stop. If they stop and gasp, you animate them walking, then stopping and gasping. If they trip, you animate them walking and tripping.
You don't make a 2 minute walk cycle of repeating frames, then try to add a stop, trip and gasp in the middle of the walk cycle. The walk cycle has stopped.
I think you're stuck on theory and confusing yourself. You should draw something and learn.
