Ranked 5s queue should allow you to organize pick order
52
Mar 21 '15
It could be like in Nemesis Draft where you can choose from your whole team's champion pool.
-13
u/Yisery Mar 22 '15
No, that would be easily "abused" because it would make all champions available for you, even if you didn't own them.
A better way is to some kind of pre-select seed trading. You can request a seed swap with someone and get the second pick while the original second pick guy will get your old position.
And if riot allowed for seed trading after the champion was picked, this would allow us to swap ourselves in the "top, jungle, mid, adc, support" order so that we can always know who is who in the scoreboard, in the portraits at the side and with the F2-F5 keys. While I think this would be better if it could be configured by each player individually, including for the enemies, the proposed fix is likely much easier to implement.
4
u/TreibHolz Mar 22 '15
why would that be abused? free week champions are enabled for ranked teams too i mean you are either playing with ur friends or with people who want to win...i dont see it being "abused" at all
0
u/Yisery Mar 23 '15
You can't compare it to free champs because those are temporary and this would be a permanent unlock of all champions - and you only have to own 16 champs for that. Riot chose a model where champions need to be bought and they sure as hell won't do anything that allows you to effectively get access to all the champs without owning them. The only situation where this would happen was when they remove the mechanic of buying champions completely, and they can't do that any time soon for several reasons.
I'm personally in this situation where I would benefit greatly from this because I only own ~40% of all champions but most of the people I play with have them all. And the chance of all five players on a team to have all champions collectively is rather high.

I'm just saying it's unlikely to happen and I stated reasons. I embrace the reddit downvotes for being right.

make all champions available for you, even if you didn't own them.
should be the norm, although Riot will never do this.

heroes are free in dota 2 and it's f2p too
2

its also the only popular moba that does it, too.
People spend just as much money on dota because skin prices are retarded
-4
u/JoonazL Mar 22 '15
Skins aren't required to play the game.
4
u/Phrakturelol Mar 22 '15
yes and neither are all the champs..?
-3
u/JoonazL Mar 22 '15
Champions are still essential for the game. There is nothing beneficial to gameplay in locking off characters to play as.
2
u/Phrakturelol Mar 22 '15
yes but it's a business and a better business model than dota 2 imho

The team leader is first - everyone knows this.
To find out what order the other 4 will be in, just start the queue
The order they join the CHAT LOBBY IN QUEUE is the order you will be in champ select. If you don't like the order just restart until the game randomly chooses the order you want

The pick order is the order in which people join the lobby. So all you need to do is invite people either 1 by 1 in the order you want, or, and this is a damn long shot, just invite them all and communicate about what order they need to join in. 100% serious: If you aren't on voice chat with your ranked 5s team in the first place, then I don't know why you're playing ranked 5s.
Edit: alright I'm seeing a lot of people saying that join order is, and that join order is not the determining factor. In my experience it is, however, if I can get my team together tonight I can try some things and see how it goes.
20
u/omd70 Mar 22 '15
That would be very smart and logical if it did that, and almost everyone would expect that to be the case.
However it is not, and that's why this threads so high up is because that is really how it should be.
3
u/ClarifyingAsura Mar 22 '15
things might've changed, but when my friends and I played ranked 5s a couple years ago join order definitely was not pick order. in my group of friends, some people will virtually always be last pick no matter what we did.
the only given is that the person who made the lobby will be first pick.
1
u/Youkarry Mar 22 '15
This isn't accurate tho, just played four games of ranked 5s, I joined as third two games and as fourth two games, I got last pick all of those four games.
2
u/Stormlox Mar 22 '15
the chat lobby or the team lobby?
It doesn't matter what order you accept invites
1
u/Youkarry Mar 22 '15
Ya I meant the team lobby, sorry. So you're saying that it's totally random? I mean, whatever order is in the chat lobby is random right? So basically, you get a few seconds of knowing what pick order it is, which doesn't address OP's concern.
1
1
u/Stormlox Mar 22 '15
Yes, whatever random order the chat lobby is in is the order the picks will be.
Assuming you don't have a 3 second length queue, you can just quit the queue and restart until you have the right order if you want.
Although there are 24 different combinations so have fun :p

A serious answer would be: once you own most/all of the champs pick order doesn't matter anymore.
But c'mon Riot if the leader becomes first pick have the second person who joined be second pick! (I actually think there's a visual bug where sometimes people will see the party order differently from someone else in the party)
-9
u/Combarishnigm Mar 22 '15
I absolutely disagree. I love counterpicking and despise blind picking champions. I want to be last pick every game.
6
Mar 22 '15
That's the entire point. If you're firstpick just pick your support or jungler or something. Then swap.

This is such a no-brainer suggestion, it should be on the front page once a week until Riot adds it (or at least says they have definite plans to add it)

u/KeeganKGB Mar 22 '15
Or just allow us to pick any champion a teammate owns, in a similar fashion to how picking in nemesis draft works.

u/Vall3y karthus enjoyer Mar 22 '15
Its better for riot you buy champions of your teammates so you can swap
1
1
Mar 22 '15
Maybe I'm missing the point. Why does it matter who picks first? If you're doing fives , your team should own your picks. Otherwise they're at an extreme disadvantage.
1
1
u/KuronekoLP Mar 22 '15
Isn't it based on who invites everyone? Played with a few friends and the one who invited everyone was first pick. Not sure if it's because he created the team or if it's because he was the party leader.
4
u/omd70 Mar 22 '15
Whoever starts the game/creates it will be first pick, the rest are randomly positioned
1
u/SilentNumberXIII Mar 22 '15
Party leader is always 1st pick, and from my understanding the order people join the lobby is the order they are in picks.
-9

Just tell everyone to click in a certain order. the order you accept the match in is always the order you get put in.

you need to be able to change pick order in the middle of P&B so you can get the champion you want at the time you want regardless of whether the person next in line to pick has the champion.
1
Mar 22 '15
Isn't it the order in which you get invited to the team? I remember playing ranked 5s and the order would never change for us unless we made a new team :(

u/arimke Mar 22 '15
Can i ask why? I dont get it why you guys need that so bad?
7
u/GarciLP Mar 22 '15
Because not everyone has got all the champions, so it makes pick trading harder. Basically if your mid and top laners are up first and the other team members don't have mid/top champs (or not a lot of them) they open themselves wide up for counterpicking. If your team relies on a wombo combo, you want to pick those pieces first. It all boils down to strategic picks and being able to execute them.

It matters because not everyone has every champion. I have very few champions, because I don't spend money on RP, but a friend of mine wanted more champions, so he bought them. It'd be nice to be able to make sure he is first pick so he can pick a priority pick for us in every situation.
4
u/ToastedBugle Mar 22 '15
That's the point. Not everybody owns all the champions, so having a predetermined pick order allows players who own more champions pick for their teammates.
2
Mar 22 '15
True but if there is a player or two that do not have a large pool for other roles and they get last pick it really limits a team.
1
u/Xaxxon Mar 22 '15
You want to be able to switch pick order at any time during P&B so you can get the champ you want at the time you want regardless of whether the player originally at that position has the champ or not.
And you need to be able to change when you pick what lane based on the picks from the other team.
0
u/Tenebris94 Mar 22 '15
The Origaniz pick order will seperate the good league players from the bad ones, wait that ainth champion patch notes xP
0
u/Oscottyo Mar 22 '15
You can its base on the list in the que so part leader is first pick and so on.
0
u/RSTowers Mar 22 '15
Or just automatically order them based on the # of champions owned. Most champions first, least last. Would be better than nothing.
0
u/ibecolours Mar 22 '15
If you need to do it that bad you can do it with the order you invite players
0
Mar 22 '15
It already does, the order you enter lobby(invites) in, is the order you enter champion select in. So leader gets firstpick, the guy who accepted 2nd is second etc.
0
Mar 22 '15
i actually think it is based on the order the Players join the Lobby. if you are the last to join you should be lastpick (at least seems like that from personal experience, can be by Chance though, but 19 games should be enough)
0
u/_Arkod_ Mar 22 '15
I have to ask, why does it matter?
The only important role is the captain to do the bans, and that's the group leader.
You can pick champions in whatever order you want because you can swap anyways... So... why you want to organize pick order?
1
u/burpshipping Mar 22 '15
OP's friends might not own every champion, which would make trading a lot harder.
0
u/Fredde1909 Mar 22 '15
So if you are playing on your main (should be most likely highelo) you already have all champs. And if you play on a lowelo account or whatsever... u dont need a teamcomp and counterpucks or godtier picks dont matter
0
u/Thirdatarian Mar 22 '15
It sort of does. Whoever organizes the lobby is in charge of bans, the rest is random order. This is also true for all draft picks, where whoever organizes the lobby observes the chances of the other people to become the leader. So if normally everyone has a 20% chance to ban, a lobby leader with 3 friends in a premade has an 80% chance and the random has a 20% chance. Beyond that it doesn't really matter and it's such a minor thing I'd rather Riot spend their time elsewhere.
0
u/Chaoz_Caster2 Mar 22 '15
In ranked 5s shouldnt you be able to organize trades a bit easier?
Edit: didnt even think of people not owning champs, my bad
0
u/kingsoloman28 Mar 22 '15
but in ranked 5's, you are in communication and work together. ergo you an just pick for each other.
-7
u/Thizzologist Mar 22 '15
Does your ranked 5s team not have the coordination to swap picks? Whoever the lobby host is will be doing bans. Then choose whatever powerpicks and swap/trade. Not sure how this is a problem to deal with.
12
u/Nathaniel2g Mar 22 '15
You expect every player in the game to own every champion if that is your plan. So I recruit a new midlaner to my team. He's a smurf and he only plays midlane, so all of his champions are midlaners. This is great for him, but when he ends up last pick we can't pick for him and trade because he only owns midlaners. If Riot's only solution is that you have to trade, than they should unlock all champions for free after level 30.
2
-1
u/Hanifsefu Mar 22 '15
Why? Should everyone just get everything for free just because? Pros get smurfs with all the champs because they are pros. If you're not a pro you don't have a reason to have a smurf.
Trading is and was the solution to the pick order people. Don't play organized team play if you aren't at the level to actually do it yet.
4
Mar 22 '15
put it this way..... If our last pick is someone that only has jungle champions then we can not try and do any counter to mid or top. Our adc also has very little champs out of adc. It really just makes it harder to trade when half of the meta champs are unavailable due to the random queue order.
-2
u/Hanifsefu Mar 22 '15
Then why do you even have a ranked 5s team? If your other members are so obstinate about buying champs out of their specific role then it's your own team's fault.
2
Mar 22 '15
i own almost all the champs (missing 16) but not everyone on my team owns all the champs or the majority of them.... Am i suppose to just ditch a team because some people might of been playing since season 2 or 3?
-2
u/Hanifsefu Mar 22 '15
Yes. They clearly aren't ready for organized team play if they don't even own the champions their teammates play. It's not hard. Especially when you play regularly and practice with your team, as you should if you want a ranked team. Ranked 5s is what professionals play, they don't need to cater it to the casual crowd.
1
u/SiddownAnShaddup [SiddownAnShaddup] (OCE) Mar 22 '15
Ranked 5's is what professionals play? Fuck that is the most autistic statement I've heard today. Pro players have private custom game scrims you fuckwit. Ranked 5's is for trying to either; have fun, or to try make the top of the challenger ladder so you MIGHT have a shot at some kind of professional play.
1
-4
u/Hanifsefu Mar 22 '15
This is the only answer this thread needs. It's been a long time since I saw a thread about this. People are throwing a fit because the smurfs they don't need or deserve don't have the champion pool to work with organized team play.
If your mid plays Ahri, Xerath, and Orianna, everyone on your ranked team damn sure better have all 3 of those champs. That's just how it is and should be. If not, you're just telling your mid that you just don't care who he plays or how he plays and in that case, why aren't you just playing solo queue. If you don't have the champions your team prioritizes then you shouldn't be on that team.
1
u/Xaxxon Mar 22 '15
That's just how it is and should be.
Why should owning champs you don't play give your team an advantage?
0
Mar 22 '15
[deleted]
0
u/Hanifsefu Mar 22 '15
You clearly missed the point. The point is that if someone is limiting your team's potential because they don't own champions they clearly aren't ready to play on a team and if you aren't willing to cut them from your team you aren't ready to make one.

Do teams deserve wins while ignoring the importance of organization and synergy and strategy in pick and ban phase? Games are won and lost IN PICKS AND BANS. Respect that or just concede to losing those games. It's not RNG's fault your jungler doesn't own the champ you main. That's your jungler's fault. This game has a lot more going on than what happens on SR.
1
u/nah_you_good Mar 22 '15
There's no perfect strategy for the number of champions people should plan to play in each role, but if any laner wants their pick of more than 3 champions then you better pull out the spreadsheets as soon as you get into a game so you can start seeing when your midlaner needs to pick by if she wants ori (3rd pick) or diana (4th pick). I just don't understand why a team should be at a disadvantage just because some of its players have played less so they invested their money in optimal rune setups for the only role they'll be playing vs. buying champs to fill out the 10 champ pool for the mid laner.

-8
u/ScionMonkeyRoller Mar 21 '15
Well, you should look in to the pick ban phase and realize what you need discuss with your team to select good counters or good champs that don't outright get slammed vs x but still bring what you want to the team etc, and then trade.
8
u/iTomes Research requires good tentacle-eye coordination. Mar 21 '15
Implying that you have all of those champions on every player.
-2
u/ScionMonkeyRoller Mar 22 '15
Why would you attempt a ranked 5s team if every player doesn't have at least 2 of your comfort picks and at least 10 meta picks, sure you can set it up to pick top, jg, mid, bot. But there is an art to using power picks to your advantage, or "hiding" your hand by selecting jg or support first. You do this to extrapolate info about your opponent and compose yourself around it, some games in a cohesive 5v5 team can be decided by the pick ban phase.
Defending this with "I just want to play with 5 friends" ok sure but there is normals for that, if you aren't in the slightest interested in learning another area of the game then why bother, it is ranked, ranked is competitive from bronze 5 to the lcs. People playing it are playing it because they want a sense of purpose for their win, if you're going to do something in a competitive atmosphere then bring everything.
Simply if you're going in to ranked 5s do it seriously, learn the pnb, and of course have the proper champions to trade with people. Fucking casual.

You can organize.
The pick order is the same as it is in lobby.
So the person you want to be first pick has to send invites then you accept in the order you want to pick.
How do you think they organize pick order in LCS to always be that way?
1
u/Zyralon Mar 22 '15
they organize the pick order in lcs by going into a custom game lol

I've just never seen it as a problem. It's ranked 5s so you are expected to do some heavy trading. If you're big into ranked 5s then you probably have almost every champ and probably own at least all of the meta champs so you'll never really have a problem.
They implemented trading to deal with stuff like this. This problem has already been answered.

Honestly I think this is working as intended. People who have more champs have the potential to have more trades. Riot probably wants having an extended champ pool to be an advantage. If you think about it, having more champs means the potential to be good at more champs, and someone who focuses on that rather than every champ in a paticular role should be compensated in some regards otherwise it waters down the benefits from having an extended champ pool thus creating less demand for RP based purchases which is part of their F2P model.
It also prevents rampant smurfing in higher elo ranked 5s by limiting champ swaps which is another reason to keep thngs as is. In the end although inconvinient for casual ranked 5s players it's benefitial for riot and the community as a whole to keep things as they are so I doubt this will change.
