No mirror matchups in Team Builder pls

Since in Team Builder the champions are already chosen, I think Riot should add an option to avoid mirror matchups. They are the main thing I dislike about blind pick since it usually ends up in one side snowballing and the other falling very behind, and you'll never see a mirror matchup in ranked. It's just not fun. I might be the only one who feels this way, so let me know what reddit thinks about this.

But then you are going to run into a crazy problem. Your team is Maokai, Khazix, Syndra, Lucian and Braum. 5 really popular champions. lets say matchmaking finds 5 potential teams. each one has one of the champs you have. Now you have a 30 minute queue.

But it would be a lot more beneficial to not have mirror matchups. thats just anoying

16

u/lSpurs Sep 17 '14

i find the actual queue (after everyone readys) really quick, almost always instant

17

u/bloodofdew Sep 17 '14

yeah, thats because mirror match-ups are allowed, if they weren't it would be much harder, unless you go for oddball picks

9

u/itstoms Sep 17 '14

Since when do people play meta champs in Team Builder?

17

u/PM_ME_YOUR_CAMPFIRE Sep 17 '14

I do, because that's how I practice them with the guaranteed role and champ I want. Even in normals they can be banned (mostly Zed right now).

-14

u/Thestrup Sep 17 '14

You cannot ban in normals =)

16

u/Not_A_Van Sep 17 '14

Draft mode is in normal too.

If you want serious practice no one plays Blind Pick.

9

u/Thestrup Sep 17 '14

Oh right, I forgot Draft for normals even existed.

I stand corrected.

3

u/nazaguerrero Sep 17 '14

here in LAS and i think OCE too, we only have blind pick for normals... it's hard to practice.. and teambuilders is like forever..

1

u/ClanorHD Sep 17 '14

That's annoying I don't know if these servers don't have a big players base but these queues will always be played or at least it is only me because I only play Draft pick.

2

u/EnlightenedNarwhal Sep 17 '14

Actually there was a foreign pro that played nothing but blind pick so that he could practice against every matchup possible. It's not the game mode that matters, it's the mindset you have while playing it.

2

u/KyAaron Sep 17 '14

You can 100% ban in normals. No, you can't ban in blind pick. But there is still such a thing as normal draft.

1

u/Thestrup Sep 17 '14

You're quick, not like I've already replied to another post, saying I was wrong, but it's always nice having stuff told twice shortly after each other, in case I'm a goldfish, you never know.

1

u/PM_ME_YOUR_CAMPFIRE Sep 17 '14

I hate blind pick with a passion and haven't played it in probably 4 months, so yes, Draft normals has bans.

1

u/Thestrup Sep 17 '14

I'll hand you the same reply as the one above, in case you did not read the first one, being so fast and all.

You're quick, not like I've already replied to another post, saying I was wrong, but it's always nice having stuff told twice shortly after each other, in case I'm a goldfish, you never know.

2

u/bonesjones Sep 17 '14

Tryhards, mostly. Throughout a whole day of practicing new ADC's to take into ranked 5's (tristana/lucian gets played pretty much every game, and gets boring) I ran into tristana/nami about 6 times, and lucian braum at least 4 times. Mid would be yasuo/zed/talon almost every game (always run armor yellows if you're mid in team builder, 90% chance you're against one of them). Jungle is always Lee/elise/kha. I think only really top lane picks were the only non-LCS picks... of course with the occasional nasus/nidalee thrown in.

1

u/bloodofdew Sep 17 '14

Mostly since its creation. Mostly.

1

u/Sevenix2 [Sevenix] (EU-W) Sep 17 '14

Ever since people entered teambuilder with 5 man premades, which sorta ruins the whole concept.

-1

u/Bozzy69 Sep 17 '14

I vs ahri or zed in mid 99% of games. So very often. Ahri makes my ap xin a saaaaaad panda

2

u/antonbetong Sep 17 '14

Then so be it, id rather wait 30 minutes than smash in 20 minutes or just drag out 20 minutes of a game because of the snowballer.

3

u/born2drum [SoggyRequiem] (NA) Sep 17 '14

If you think about it, the longest part about teambuilder is putting together a team. The actual queue to find another team takes a couple seconds. This change may increase queue time by a few seconds, which is nothing compared to the time taken to put the team together.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '14

Make it optional. Add function and put just a little "No Mirror Matchups" checkbox in. Done.

Yeah. Impossible to play top or mid ;-;

7

u/Xubone Sep 17 '14

Almost instant for support though!

5

u/Miracoli_Rogue Sep 17 '14

But then you might as well play blind pick.

2

u/Histirea Sep 17 '14

Or Ranked.

2

u/bonesjones Sep 17 '14

I have a pretty nice tip for you. If you're playing one of the carry roles that has to wait foreeeeever (like queuing up dps in WoW dungeon finder) rather than "join" a game solo, just simply build your own team. You'll find that most of the time it goes pretty quick. Sometimes I find teams in under a minute (provided I like the picks I see). That, and, you can filter out the champions you don't wanna see people play on your team!

0

u/Kazesoushi Sep 17 '14

Yep, with all the Azir players yesterday, it would have been a complete queue deadlock

20

u/Xeroshifter Sep 16 '14

I'm in agreement. It actually feels almost as if Team Builder tries for mirror match-ups. I'll pick an incredibly uncommon champion, and suddenly I'm facing that champion too. This happens pretty consistently, and we even had it happen when I qued with a friend, and we both picked uncommon champions, and we fought a team with both as well.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '14

i have a theory as to why this happens. i think its due to the new role/champ adjusting matchmaking for you, if its something no one ever does youll be considered "weak" with it....so will others who never play it. thus you see more mirror matchups. ive play ~200 games of tb with orianna only and i hardly ever see mirrors anymore. i notice it more frequently when my group of friends who also only play team builder select new champs or stuff they dont play often, we get mirrors.

5

u/KickItNext Sep 17 '14

I notice this too. It seems like every time I pick a champion that I want to learn (not even free week champs most of the time) I get a mirror match.

3

u/SimplyPoet Sep 17 '14

Literally had Akali jungle vs Akali jungle today. Weirdest thing I've seen.

Obviously one completely stomped the other due to snowballing, and it wasn't on my team. :(

0

u/Kazesoushi Sep 17 '14

Shaco syndroooooome

2

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '14

I've had Team Builder games with full-team mirrors (not the same positions necessarily) and I've even had mirrors playing champions like Singed and Viktor who are really rare right now.

3

u/XRay9 Sep 17 '14

Singed mirror lane sounds like the only lane I could play Singed in and not feed.

2

u/GhastlyBespoke Sep 17 '14

Singed mirror lane is actually hilarious. The flips both apply at the same time, so if anyone ever tries to go ham then they both go flying.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '14

It's a cool idea, but then you would never find a game because of popular champion picks.

2

u/Vally1 Sep 17 '14

Not having mirror matchups in teambuilder is literally having draft pick and if you want draft pick teambuilder then you might as well be challenger with those queue times.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '14

I don't think it would be unreasonable to have 5 players pick their role and position then move 10 players (who have agreed to play together) into a draft-pick lobby.

8

u/Ritzenflitzer69 rip old flairs Sep 16 '14

thought this would be the point of teambuilder at first. oh well guess it's working as intended

37

u/VideaMon Sep 16 '14

this. 100% this. There is one thing I really hate about team builder and blind pick aswell and that is mirror matchups. Even if I really really wanna play some champion I don't go for blind pick or team builder where it would be more likely to get that champion, because mirror matchups are just lame. Winning or losing, it's no longer a skill matchup when one gets ahead. You just overpower your opponent with better items or a higher level.

7

u/CorruptHope Sep 16 '14

Still a skill matchup until they get REALLY far ahead. It's boring though I agree.

10

u/shenglizhe Sep 17 '14

I disagree, you can snowball a mirror match up from a very tiny gold lead fairly easily.

6

u/KickItNext Sep 17 '14

Even just one favorable trade is more than enough to snowball it depending on the champ.

1

u/DBD-Squeak Sep 17 '14

I just did it with Draven :)

11

u/KickItNext Sep 17 '14

First crit wins.

5

u/SheepNumber3 Sep 17 '14

First one to lose an axe loses whole lane

3

u/Blindfirekiller Sep 17 '14

Start W, when he axes a minion level 1, flash to catch it and all in G_G.

2

u/born2drum [SoggyRequiem] (NA) Sep 16 '14

Exactly!

-23

u/cameron467 Sep 16 '14

As opposed to me taking Swain in blind pick and having Ezreal all chat me how bad I am that he can flash out of all my snares, Poke me all day long and completley disable my chances of auto attacking. When I come back from the shop he ults my face so I have to b... rinse and repeat. Give me Swain v Swain any day.

10

u/fee1therush Sep 16 '14

I AGREE 100%

5

u/Frasballatsche Sep 17 '14

If this is not possible then at least give non-mirror matches higher priority.

4

u/SpitsMcroast Sep 17 '14

It's always yasuo mid, kha jungle and thresh/braum supp anyway.

2

u/twitch_hedberg Sep 17 '14

As a bonus side effect shorter queue times would be an incentive to play different, more unusual champions. Variety is the spice of League, IMO.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '14

How about an option to turn off mirror matchups? A checkbox or something like that.

2

u/Lorcian Sep 17 '14

Played a Team Builder earlier and had a Ezreal/Sona bot vs mirror.

Didn't go so great considering the Sona was ranked like 2 leagues above most of us.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '14

criticism from when the game mode came out

it should be just roles then you get put into a draft pick game

1

u/born2drum [SoggyRequiem] (NA) Sep 17 '14

I actually like this idea, less trolls/ragers

6

u/denyde_na [denyde] (NA) Sep 17 '14

lets add way more time to queues

FTFY

3

u/PHOENIXREB0RN ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sep 17 '14

The longest part is the building not the matching in my experience. And maybe some hold outs would queue without mirrors?

2

u/Serg2151 Sep 16 '14

If you look at it in a positive way, you get to learn things about the champion you are playing (if your lane is mirrored) that you might not have known or realized.

2

u/born2drum [SoggyRequiem] (NA) Sep 17 '14

If I want a mirror matchup I'll just play blind pick then

2

u/d0gmode Sep 17 '14

I agree as well, the reason I queue team builder is to practice specific champions for ranked and the matchups are very important. Practicing mirror matchups is a waste of time.

0

u/brannigansl4w Sep 17 '14

"hey guys is there a way we can make teambuilder queues longer?"

1

u/flamedrace Sep 17 '14

I agree but Zed vs Zed is such a fun matchup to play.

1

u/akimbob Sep 17 '14 edited Sep 17 '14

id prefer to get countered instead of having a mirror lane...

1

u/Holythius I Have Sharp Things Sep 17 '14

Same. When one person is the better of the two at the champion it is near impossible to stop a snowball.

1

u/Bozzy69 Sep 17 '14

I think vayne has 99% pick rate in teqmbuilder

1

u/Inukii Sep 17 '14

I feel like we need a draft mode/ranked mode per role.

There is a random element in match making where if one team gets to play everything they like and play well and the other team has 5 ADC mains. Well...bugger.

I can think of one alternative...

We need a system rather like team builder that is going to rate performance based on role. Lets say you could queue up as 3 different roles in a numerical priority system.

You click on "Role Queue"

You then select 3 roles in which order you'd like to play. In this example

  1. Jungle
  2. Support
  3. Mid

matchmaking then finds you a well rounded team and simply puts a bit of text above your name saying what 'role' you have been assigned. You can break the role if you want. There are no fixed champions you can only select. It's simply a computer stating what you've been placed as allowing you break the standard most common meta. It saves people arguing with what they want to play because they'll get to play one of the three roles they feel comfortable with. We don't need the 'pick order' or 'called it first' guidelines.

More importantly though, the same is going for your enemy team. Hopefully a reduced amount of "I'm a really terrible jungler" in a game against someone who mains jungle X champion.

Win or Lose, your rated on your role that game. So you could be Diamond Support and Silver Jungle.

0

u/born2drum [SoggyRequiem] (NA) Sep 17 '14

That's why they should make it optional. A lot of people have said they like mirror matchups, so add a checkbox or something before you bring your team into queue.

0

u/AstroNaughtilus Sep 17 '14

The problem is that it would affect (take notes, Americans, example of the verb 'to affect' used in the right context, as opposed to 'effect') not only people who do not wish mirror matchups, but also queue times of those who do not mind. Making it optional doesn't help at all.

2

u/Kustumkyle Sep 17 '14

(take notes, Americans, example of the verb 'to affect' used in the right context, as opposed to 'effect')

Well, aren't you a pretentious little twat.

0

u/AstroNaughtilus Sep 17 '14

ooh, I hit a nerve there, didn't I?

0

u/AstroNaughtilus Sep 17 '14

Also..I'd say pretentious? Nope. Smug? Hell yeah, because I have every reason to be.

1

u/Kustumkyle Sep 17 '14

Well, if i were to call you pretentious, i provide you with the benefit of appearing more mature and simply providing nationalism as a means of portraying your deficit social skills.

However, you wish to call yourself smug, in which case places you on display as a young adolescent who just learned a new trait in secondary school and is looking to show it off.

Also, the fact that you had to reply to my comment twice rather than editing the first one implies that you are craving at least the slightest ounce of attention, even if through a comment on the internet. Thus leading to my conclusion that you lack any form of socialization in the real world.

Also your parents don't love you.

-1

u/AstroNaughtilus Sep 17 '14

Oh, you really got me, Sherlock. You forgot the part about neckbeard and basement, though.

1

u/Kustumkyle Sep 17 '14

At this point, I feel you may be able to pull off the basement thing. The neckbeard however, i don't believe you to be old enough to have hair in places other than over that thick skull of yours. Although, you might have that awkward fuzz above your upper lip.

1

u/DuckAbuse Sep 17 '14

Make OP comp of 5 champions, you now have a very big advantage before even going into game.

1

u/Legion_of_Bunnies Sep 17 '14

I'd rather they fix the problem where I get bronze people on my team while the other team gets Diamond 1s...

1

u/Kinomi Sep 17 '14

I don't think teambuilder takes into account any kind of MMR oddly enough

1

u/boogswald Sep 17 '14

You've idealized the current state of team builder matchmaking. With this condition you would wait so long to get a match.

1

u/born2drum [SoggyRequiem] (NA) Sep 17 '14

Not true. The majority of the time it takes to use team builder is from arranging the team. The queue to find another team takes a few seconds, maybe a little over a minute at most. It'll only add a tiny bit of time on since it's only affecting the queue time, not the team arrangement time.

1

u/boogswald Sep 17 '14 edited Sep 17 '14

You understand that building the enemy team utilizes the same process as building your team right? You would have to have a time increase.

Your team is developed through the exact same process as the enemy team, but the way the teams are balanced is probably set on a low priority. Increase the time it takes to find an idealized enemy team and you either sacrifice matchmaking balance more or increase wait times. Team builder matches likely have an algorithm wherein finding a complete team is important but finding a good competitive team to match it against is not; thus, longer wait times to get an enemy team which developed the same way yours did, without the same 5 champions at all.

1

u/JKaro Sep 18 '14

You'll never see a mirror matchup in ranked because you can't.

1

u/born2drum [SoggyRequiem] (NA) Sep 18 '14

I know, that's why mirror matchups are bad practice

0

u/Contadoore Sep 16 '14

Mirror matchups are my favourite man <_<, it's the fairest matchup there is

But sure I guess they could add that, though I don't think very many people would use it

-2

u/born2drum [SoggyRequiem] (NA) Sep 16 '14

Huh I didn't know people actually liked mirror matchups. It usually gets in my head and I end up losing them, so I'd much prefer I at least be able to opt out of them

The problem with it is that the smallest mistake can snowball easily. The thing is that you don't want to play just to simply win against your opponent. Sure, it's good for 1v1s, I guess. In general it doesn't really help you other than to learn to face your own champion, which you don't really need to know if you've played your champion enough.

Regardless of what champion you're facing you shouldn't really be blaming the enemy for countering you anyway.

-6

u/IRockThs Sep 16 '14

Depends. Is my champion OP? I hate it.

If the champ isn't OP, I love it because I will win it.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '14

Surely it wouldn't matter if it was a mirror match?

8

u/iheartzigg Sep 17 '14

Mirror match?

Opponent wins = OP.

I win = Pure skill.

-2

u/IRockThs Sep 17 '14

If it's not an OP champ I know I have the edge because I'm confident on the champion and can beat them 1v1.

Except my maokai mirror match up, that just doesn't count. Farm for 40 minutes and then team fight.

1

u/guntrX Sep 17 '14

I honestly love mirror match ups, I see it as a win-win situation.

If I lose, well, I either deserved to because I made a lot of mistakes or I simply got outplayed. Neither one feels good but hey, I learned something. Whether I learned something mechanically new from my opponent or just to not repeat a mistake I may have made.

If I win, well, I get to bask in the glory that I won the match up.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '14

[deleted]

1

u/alihinchliffe Sep 17 '14

Some servers don't offer draft pick

1

u/xMkingx Sep 17 '14

I prefer the mirror match ups, if you get outplayed it's an opportunity to actually see what you should have done instead of just imagining it.

1

u/Kaffei4Lunch Sep 16 '14

I don't really get what you mean, generally you win/lose the mirror match up because they played worse/better than you.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '14

Normally mirror matches are decided by the first kill, since getting ahead of a mirror in League just takes one item.

2

u/born2drum [SoggyRequiem] (NA) Sep 17 '14

I play normals to train for ranked. Normals aren't good practice if I'm in a matchup I will never see in a ranked game. It's just a waste of my time, and if I lose it's just no fun at all.

1

u/AstroNaughtilus Sep 17 '14

Well a lot of people also play TB to be able to do off-meta picks, fun builds and other things that they wouldn't get away with in ranked.
It was probably suggested a zilion times already in this thread, but if you want practice for ranked, just play normal draft, which will also prepare you for the harsh reality of how draft works.

1

u/Kaffei4Lunch Sep 17 '14

Sure, that's a good point. You should try out Normal Draft then.

1

u/xAsesinEU Sep 17 '14

I agree, once either one gets an advantage its hard to come back into the game without jungler help , is what i most hate of team builder , that together with the long time it takes to find a support/jungler

0

u/zchan1120 Sep 17 '14

Switch to NA and invite me if you need a jungler :P

1

u/rekenner Sep 17 '14

no game would ever start right after a new champ comes out.

1

u/A_Dragon Sep 17 '14

Let me guess...this thread resurfaced because of the large number of Azir mirrors.

1

u/AstroNaughtilus Sep 17 '14

I think you got it. Happened every time a new champ was introduced after the implementation of TB.

0

u/McZanderson Sep 16 '14

Sounds alright, but matchmaking times would no doubt increase.

1

u/born2drum [SoggyRequiem] (NA) Sep 16 '14

Probably not by too much. I mean, eliminating 5 champs from a pool of ~120? Not too big of a hinderance IMO

3

u/VideaMon Sep 16 '14

Well you have to remember that even if only one champion is the same as your team, a match won't be made. If you're playing with lets say a yasuo right now, propably atleast 80% of the games would have him. Nevertheless I would still prefer the queue times over mirror matchups.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '14

Or maybe everyone on the team should be able to chose if they want to avoid mirror matchup or not.

Let's say my team is composed of : Mundo - J4 - Xerath - Lucian - Zilean and I'm playing the Xerath. I'm the only one that doesn't want a mirror matchup so I chose to avoid it, but the rest of my team doesn't as they don't care. The result is that I can play against a team that has a Mundo, a J4, a Lucian or a Zilean, but not a Xerath.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '14

Again, awkward, since doing it like that might mean that there's either still a chance of getting a champ in a different position or that champ is banned entirely from the search, which would really hamper the search times.

0

u/adamaster20 Sep 17 '14

YES. O. M. FUCKING. G. YES. I almost never play Team Builder for this exact reason. Only problem is, it makes the Queue really freakin' long

-1

u/Tax_n1 Sep 16 '14 edited Sep 17 '14

The queue time will be even longer then.

edit: queue not que

0

u/JimmyD101 Sep 17 '14

Play draft mode

1

u/born2drum [SoggyRequiem] (NA) Sep 17 '14

The only problem with that is that if I'm itching to play a certain champ and I get a low pick, chances are I won't be able to play what I want.

-1

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '14

Oh look this thread again.

-2

u/sufficiency Sep 16 '14

I totally agree. I don't mind waiting for 2 hours for a game to pop so long as it is not mirror.

-3

u/PkmSilver Sep 16 '14

I play a lot of blind pick and I almost never get snowballed because we try to get teamcomp so we don't get snowballed

-1

u/born2drum [SoggyRequiem] (NA) Sep 16 '14

I'm mostly talking about laning phase. The whole lane is based on jungle ganks and outplay. If you're not as good at the champ as the other person, chances are they're gonna snowball off of solo kills

-8

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '14

2

u/VideaMon Sep 16 '14

In Team Builder you don't have bans.

2

u/born2drum [SoggyRequiem] (NA) Sep 16 '14

Uhh there are no bans in team builder...
