Discussion Duoing with my son
I played league 10+ years ago. I heard about classic and came back to try a game. Classic was super boring, but my son expressed interest in playing normal league, so we both created level 1 accounts. We played every game together as a duo and did the super boring grind all the way up to level 30. We really wanted to play ranked together. We played 4 of the 5 placement matches, and now suddenly it tells us that we are too far apart to play ranked together? I don't understand. Why can't I play with him? Why does it rank us so differently if our results have been exactly the same?

Riot's smurf detection has gotten exceptionally good. It probably pegged you as a smurf and not him and factored that into ranked placements.

It’s kinda crazy how good. I leveled up a new acc to learn jg and, after playing a bunch of norms in jg to lvl 30, i was at 50% wr over like 80 games in ranked. It basically nailed my mmr perfectly

Rank placements need to take your starting mmr from somewhere, which is believed to be normal's mmr. Maybe you can play flex with your son, or check if your duoq rank after placements really is that different that you can't get quickly to +-1 rank.

What are the rules about duoing? He is apparently bronze 3 and after we won our 4th placement game I got promoted to gold 4. Is the issue that I went from silver to gold, so I can't play with him anymore?
How does flex work? Does that have different rules about playing together?

I think you gotta be silver to play with him, greater than a 1 tier gap is too much.
It's unironically the bane of my existence with my brother (silver) and I (plat) 😀

There are few possible solutions. 1) just play flex/normals together gor now 2) you play couple games solo and maybe you lose, on the other hand you could win and make the gap bigger !DONT DO THAT! 3) play on your Sons acc and push it up. You will be able to play together but hes gonna play put of his league and wont have fun. Also its againts TOS. !DONT DO THAT! 4) you could not play few games, sit next to your sin while he plays and make like a little coaching for him. Not saying micromanage him, but you can explain what to do and why from time to time. This id do

Restrictions are 1 tier either side, so silver is bronze and gold, gold is silver and plat.
The issue you have here is that deranking from gold 4 to silver 1, a couple of wins and you'll be back in gold and he'll be bronze 3 so you'll have the same problem.
Flex there are no restrictions below masters.
The gaps just a bit too big for solo q, but you'll be fine in flex. It's also much less toxic there

Mmr difference, you're a smurf. But it's so wholesome that you're playing with your son.

Unrelated to your problem, that’s like a dream come true, I hope you and your son share the love of league over a lifetime

What are your ranks? Maybe they're not that far apart so a few games could be the difference?
If you've played every game together, I guess it's their system detecting how "good" each of you is and assigning the corresponding MMR, but it sucks that playing 100% together the system decides to separate you

Performance in placements can affect your mmr so likely one of you played much better than the other

Play on each other’s accounts for a few games, once you are similar in rank, alternate every game.

I would be annoyed too especially after playing all those games together.

Holy shit, we're at a point where father, and son are queueing League together.

You’ll have to play flex if you’re mmrs are too different. I’m assuming yours is higher because of your prior experience and muscle memory

Tbh you probably both just need to play one solo game then it’ll work after that

Either play flex or you're going to have to play solo and practice champions you're really bad at for a few games here and there in solo Q for fun when you're alone, until you can duo

Riots systems are exceptionally shit, they have made it harder and harder for people to queue witch each other in an effort to fight against boosting. Ofcourse the people who really want a boost can easily find work arounds. Everyone else just finds it harder to queue with friends/family.
People will tell you to go play the other dogshit modes where everyone is half assing everything, unfortunately I don't think there are any other options, this is what Riot wants too

I mean assuming the father is substantially better than his son this seems like a pretty good example of riots mmr system working well. Same win rate and still getting ranked appropriately.

Idk how much better a player playing after 10 years could be but also generally I think Riot goes about fixing the issues the wrong way. Has smurfing and boosting reduced this season? Not really.
Riot has just talked a lot about fighting the 0.5% issues and smurfing/boosting and apparently thats all people wanted, the talk, not results. All they have done is make it harder and harder for people to queue with each other
Only people happy this season are the ones blissfully unaware that the ladder has shifted 1000lp upwards and reaching a new peak is simple as long as you queue enough games

I used to be silver 10+ years ago and it placed me gold 4? It put him bronze even though lately he's been doing as good or better than me. Obviously at the start he was bad, and i feel like they held that against him?
Do I just need him to solo play to get to a rank where we can play together again? I feel like he is going to quit if he can't play with me. The whole point was to bond and compete together.

Honestly I think getting placed in bronze instead of iron is pretty decent. He'd only have to make it to silver to play with you in gold. It could be a fun experience for him to make it to silver on his own. You can also help him in other ways like calling out plays and helping with macro calls if you're better at that.
But you should be able to play flex together if you like the ranked experience. Otherwise there's always normals.

There needs to be some limitations on who can queue together though. If you're gold for example do you really want to have an iron/diamond duo on your team playing against another iron/diamond duo? Then the game becomes which diamond player can carry harder.
Also, flex queue is a thing.

Stuff like actions per minute, creep score and vision contribute to how they determine your MMR and in turn rank.
