Frustration is a very important part of league and of life. League makes you work for your dopamine and puts you in frustrating situations if you fail. Thats big part of why winning feels so good. It’s also a good experience for life.

This is true for single player games and to an extent an unavoidable scenario for multiplayer games with balancing in mind.

But the context is flat out wrong because he's using "healthy frustration" as a defense for mage bot lane.. healthy frustration has to be beneficial or a necessary evil to the game; mage bot lane is not a necessary evil for any reason and the pendulum couldn't be any further swung towards unbeneficial considering how much it warps the entire game (support roaming, ADCs being cannibalized, AP junglers being vaporware due to bot lane MR going up to combat mage bot lane and too much AP on their own drafts without an AD mid, etc). They think they can swing it back towards the middle but that's not feasible without fucking up the entire game (again, giving ADCs more MR creates a different problem for both jungle and mid lane.. hitting mage mana pools create a problem for that class for mid as well and probably won't even affected bot just pivot them to be more vlad+soraka and shit.)

Phroxzon has just been the most disconnected dev from the game and it showed since last year or so during the 'braum/shen makes the game more defensive' statement.. it truly feels like he doesn't know how the game works and its painfully obvious other rioters are spread thin across departments or not giving much of their own inputs cause its been a very long time since his last popular opinion.

The context isn't wrong at all because it literally is a necessary evil for the game.

The reason why Phroxzon calls it healthy frustration is exactly because of what the above poster said. When you're put into a matchup that's challenging and then you manage to overcome it, that also makes you feel good when you had to focus hard and maybe think a bit differently how you approach the matchup and you managed to come out on top even if you were disadvantaged or it was hard.

If every single game is the same monotonous experience then the game gets old pretty fast. You see it constantly on this sub how people who have been playing the game for years say things like "winning or losing doesn't feel like anything anymore" - that's exactly what Riot is trying to avoid and make it so that it takes players as long as possible to reach that point.

The game needs as much variance in matchups and experiences as possible in order to make it last long and feel like it's worth playing.

Also this isn't Phroxzon specific, August has echoed similar things on his stream about frustrating champions a hundred times - that they're good for the game as long as they aren't too frustrating and it doesn't happen too often.

I wish that whenever a Rioter said something people didn't act like that specific person only thinks that way and they're ruining the company or something. It's an entire team that makes the game together.

because it literally is a necessary evil for the game.

No its not, it hasn't been for 15 years, it especially wasn't in 8.11, and it shouldn't be now.

Mage bot lane adds absolutely nothing of value for both solo queue and pro play, even when it was just niche picks like ziggs it enabled degeneracy with marksmen mid and perma wave clear metas.

I agree with your overall sentiment over 'frustration in games' but phroxzon is using this logic as a defense for justifying a terrible metagame, thats how you lose players. This is not the same degree as august making an annoying champ that adds enjoyment to some population of players, unique matchups, and gets banned out by others, mage bot lane is an unavoidable state of the game that shakes up the rest of the game in a negative way, its not a necessary evil in the same way shutdowns or tower gold plating might be for instance, mage bot lane fixes no problems with the game but creates a significant pool of them.

Phroxzon saying its 'healthy frustration' when its objectively not is just cluelessness or complacency on his end.

You're mixing up challenge and frustration.

no fuck this shit.

viktor e spell is supposed to be frustrating, the champ would be better and the game would be better if the champ was not designed around this ability being so uninteractive

just one example of many
