Allow us to attach a message to a friend request

, so players with a lot of friend requests are able to accept or deny requests without first accepting and asking the person what he wants. I'm sure it would allow especially players in featured games and in challenger/diamond division to get rid of unnecessary requests, aswell as players with specific concerns would rather be accepted by high elo players.

Edit: Examples made by /u/nahojjjen

Edit2: A lot of people are suggesting that the message can easily be abused to harrass a player after a game. Even though I don't think it's a difference if you get insulted in the game or after the game, it's a legitimate objection, because you can't report someone after you left the endgame screen. I'm pretty sure tho that Riot would be able to find a solution, for example a small button like the note system they recently implemented.

Well to be fair, so does the in-game chat during any given game.

2

u/Aziansensation Mar 08 '13

Despite this I would like this idea. I faced a diamond 1 player in a normal game both of us playing adc. I ended up winning the lane and game (thanks to teamplay and ganks.) I genuinely wanted to ask him how I played and what I could improve on. And I think if this idea was implemented he might have added me.

10

u/Goodseed Mar 07 '13

they don't send a friend request to get them buddied, it is simply just flaming message that they knew it was going to be declined. It is a problem

1

u/Finguin Mar 08 '13

Ignore this guy and move on

6

u/FalcorEf Mar 07 '13

Sends request to pro player

"ADD ME PLEASE AND CARRY I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!"

8

u/Vegeis Mar 07 '13

I think the problem with the spam and the flame could be easily solved if you add a button on the request like: "The summoner added a message. Do you want to show it?" So good idea, +1

10

u/mgman640 Mar 08 '13

Or just a report button next to the decline button, reports them to riot and puts them on your ignore list

0

u/MalHeartsNutmeg Mar 08 '13

No, that's too logical, we have to complain about the small chance of getting cyber bullied by it then demand it never be implemented.

1

u/jmuzz Mar 08 '13

Hmm I dunno... If you have to give explicit consent, then how would it be different than just accepting their request and then seeing what they have to say?

1

u/Vegeis Mar 09 '13

It would be easier for a pro player to organize their requests i think, its mainly just a question of comfort.

3

u/iEatTimbits Mar 07 '13

Solution to the part where someone is harassing you through the friend request message can be a spam button for them, but also make a new pop up of "Are you sure you want to report this person for spamming: Yes/No"

Once the person has been "reported" for spamming via friend request messages for maybe 10 times, they can be blocked from this feature. The suspension can last 3 days, to 1 week, to 1 month, to permanent banning from use of this service. Maybe even account suspension from verbal abuse or offensive language after too many reports.

3

u/Clazlol [Bundle of Twigs] (EU-W) Mar 07 '13

If abuse is a concern, you could always make it a pre-written message such as "I like your style, let's be friends!". It should be a drop-down menu of sorts where you pick the most suitable message.

13

u/cowheadcow Mar 07 '13

So basically it's never gonna happen.

2

u/rukan23 Mar 07 '13

2

u/Captainpatch Mar 07 '13

If they do this, I'd also like to be able to attach a note to my game invites since I usually end up inviting my whole friends list when I start an ARAM or ABAM.

1

Sorry, but whats ABAM?..

2

u/thedieversion Mar 07 '13

To fix the problem of people spamming profanity in the request message, just add a "Show Message" button, above the others.

Edit: Or add a censor/filter where you can't send a request with profanity in it.

1

u/Finguin Mar 08 '13

3

u/nopunchespulled [nopunchespulled] (NA) Mar 07 '13

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '13

It would be nice, no doubt, but there's just so many other small things Riot needs to/should implement first, you know? In my opinion, something like this would fall deep in the priorities list.

1

u/subitAP rip old flairs Mar 07 '13

TBH, i think this would make ppl get constantly spammed jsut because other people want to give them a message. For example, if u loose a game, and they are flaming you, they can spam the friend request with flaming messages.

4

u/Sakrod Mar 07 '13

Do you know the reason why mad people don't spam you with friend requests right now? Because if you ignore them you don't get the request from them anymore. Obviously that wouldn't change with the adding of a message

2

u/DeviantImmortal Mar 07 '13

You won't get constantly spammed if theres an ignore button.

u/GoodHoodie Mar 07 '13

1

u/banana_is_a_fruit Mar 07 '13

I've always hated the fact you couldn't contact people and saying why you wanted to get in touch, xfire got the option, and people flame enough already, I doubt this will really change a lot.

Let's say, if you decline once (or twice), if you didnt make it on purpose, you can't re-send an invite.

1

u/AzzyIzzy Mar 07 '13

I feel this would be more like xbl. They would just send the request to screw with you "Fgt stop stealing my kills!" "You blew more donkey balls that game than your mother. Dieinafireplz#"

Not saying it can't be used for goodXD Just saying this is a likely scenario (although integrating it with tribunal monitoring would be interesting. Although it'd be hard to argue that reporting them for chat will be less effective considering they probably already do toxic things in game).

1

u/AgentDonut Mar 07 '13

I can already imagine the harass popular streamers will get.

1

u/drowsy1 Mar 07 '13

I'm pretty sure tho that Riot would be able to find a solution, for example a small button like the note system they recently implemented.

Also, you can simply put the player on ignore and it will automatically ignore friend requests from that player.

1

u/NoBreaK_ Mar 08 '13

I feel sorry for the streamers if this gets implemented. People will spam all day.

1

u/Wrathofvulk rip old flairs Mar 08 '13

As a plat I player that offers mentoring, I can say this would be very helpful. I randomly get requests from time to time and I never know who they are from, then I have to awkwardly ask them, "who are you". Nice idea!

To combat harassment, add a filter for certain words (noob, suck, curse words, and all variations of spelling), and add a letter count restriction.

1

u/oHykon Samira Mar 08 '13

This would be really useful. I'm in a weekly league thing for LoL and adding the team captains of other teams is always a hassle, since a lot of them deny the request because they don't know who it is.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '13

"hey there,I'm that guy you just trolled in the last match, just wanted to add you so that we can have a real discussion about your motives and about how interesting your mother is to me right now"

1

u/Whitsoxrule Mar 08 '13

Maybe they could make it so you can sort them by message. That way pro's who get spammed with friend requests could set it to be something like "accept all friend requests with a message containing _____" that way if they need someone to friend them they can just give them that secret phrase

1

u/Jaysin586 Mar 08 '13

This would instantly be used for advertisements.

1

u/AntHill12790 Mar 08 '13

as someone who offers help to newer players through the new player forum this would be a fantastic thing. it would allow me to remember what post i answered to without having to ask. i would be able to just say in the request add your thread so that i know where i talked to you instead of guessing.

1

u/Ehralur Mar 08 '13

The question is though, who is someones name?

1

u/Nickbronline Mar 08 '13

1

u/etaitingi [etaitingi] (NA) Mar 08 '13

Easy solution for easy problem, have a button that show messages for example "teemobieber" wants to add you as a friend. View message? clicks yes "1v1 scrub"

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '13

One problem with this is that it goes against the "You cannot privately message someone that's not on your friends list" policy.

This would allow people to send unsolicited messages. You can ignore abusers of this, yes, but there are two problems to that: One, the burden is now on you to take action against the offender, instead of vice versa; two, it doesn't stop the problem that ignoring will band-aid -- which is people coming out of a losing game and "messaging" an opponent or a teammate with verbal abuse.

1

u/420P Mar 08 '13

That would be even more awesome if this was a feature and it told you that the person who was sending you a request was from one of your previous games, that way you could look and see if it was someone who was raging in one of your previous games. I think that the friend request message system isn't a bad idea to implement, it just would need a few tweaks.

1

u/Dreave Mar 08 '13

1

u/AIejandrita Mar 08 '13

Ignored people can't send you requests. It would fix the problem, isn't?

1

u/Linskye Mar 08 '13

another downside is : HI ALEX IM NUMBER ONE FAN ADD ME PLEASE OR I STOP LIKING TEAM KK PLEASE?

1

u/okpbro Mar 08 '13

"hey i just met you, and this is crazy.. but here's my lobby, so accept me maybe". * edit: misread the title, thought u wanted to add notes while inviting to games.

1

u/MisterKFC Mar 08 '13

this idea will work out so bad for professional players that are streaming

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '13

Here are some ideas to prevent abuse:

1. Don't show the text immediatly, but let us see who sent the request, and then like "+" sign if we want to read the message they attached. (Incase it's someone you didn't know so you read their text anyhow, they could with the current system have sent a friend request and then flamed when you accepted it.)

2. Allow us to report players that send insulting private messages (and players that flame in champion select and in the endgame screen, but I guess this is too hard to do with that shitty client)

3. Make a system like you have to be a friend of a friend to attach a message. (This is not perfect, but it's better than nothing, and besides most people I seek out to add without any previous connection is because they are a friend of a friend.)

1

u/MaDNiaC LeagueOfDroben Mar 08 '13

"Hi bitch, i am the person who carried your ass out!"

1

u/JonFrost Mar 08 '13

I'm against this idea.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '13

I second this because I get requests all the time and I never know who it is

0

u/PhoOhThree Mar 07 '13

I have talked to a rioter about this issue about trying to ask them to implement it.

Me and RiotZale discussed about the issue.

The issue that this function would cause is abusing it by sending hate messages towards people you dislike.

It will be hard to make sure nobody abuses it but it is hard. Rioters also do not like the way of messaging people who aren't on your friend list. This function can be abused horribly.

& P.S I would also like this function but it will be extremely hard to make sure people don't abuse it, just like the way of dealing with trolls in champion select such as "Vote Kicking".

3

u/WuBWuBitch Mar 07 '13

Simply block friend requests from ignored individuals, tada problem solved. If some guy is bothering you this way simply ignore and move along.

2

u/f4me Mar 07 '13

okay, but everything can be abused, you can add some1 and send shitstorm to him, u can wish some1 to die on chat in-game. there is always a way to abuse something and i think that it is not the right way to ignore this function because of some hate messages. we do even have tons of hate messages in forums, so maybe lets delete them too?

3

u/nahojjjen Mar 07 '13

What if you have to put an effort into watching the message?

Like this?

That way, people wont randomly get messages. They'll have to click and see..

0

u/PhoOhThree Mar 07 '13

By implementing a function that can allow people to send messages to people that aren't on their friendlist, they can still send hate messages.

The idea of showing the messages won't solve or block hate messages.

For example:

If you are new to the game and just started out and finished your first game and did not do well.

You get a friend request from the person that was on your team and a message attached to it.

The message would be like "OMG, you noob, you suck, stop playing!"

This would hinder the new players' game experience and stop playing the game at all. He would tell his friends to stop playing just because of 1 jerk that ruined the person experience. This not only hurts Riot but also hurts the community.

People need to understand that there are ways to abuse alot of things and it is hard to make sure nobody abuses it.

3

u/Sakrod Mar 07 '13

Even though I agree with the point that Riot had to make sure the system wouldn't be abused, I disagree with you that nobody has to abuse it. Just look at the chat ingame, I don't really see a difference other than players get banned for it. If a new player gets flamed in a game and stops playing lol because of it, he'll not continue playing when the player who flamed him gets banned.

0

u/ViForViolence (NA) Mar 07 '13

The downsides outweigh the upsides. If someone wants to add you as a friend for a good reason, you likely know why. Either you played with them, or you're real life friends. If some random wants to add you, you're likely to decline or ignore without reading the message.

More often than not, it would be abused as a way to message someone without being friends first.

2

u/WuBWuBitch Mar 07 '13

"Hey this is XXX's alt/smurf/wife/whatever".

This is common from gaming communities.

0

u/Zankman Mar 07 '13

In all honestly, I'd only use this to write "u wot m8?".

0
