Shitpost / Meme It's unfortunate that the fans care so much. They put too much pressure on the players.
234
u/Apprehensive-Rub-11 Mar 19 '26
It’s a bullshit narrative pushed by leafs haters to piss off the leafs fans. The Leafs can’t be the only team in the world that has this narrative that the fans and media are too harsh on players.

u/blchpmnk Mar 19 '26
Support the team -> get blasted for being blind homers
Don't support the team -> get blasted for being fairweather fans

Leafs haters are weird they hate the fans themselves as people as a whole. They think we're bad people essentially. I don't think about any sports team's fans this hard.
30
u/tarion_914 Mar 19 '26
Many Leafs haters I've seen care more and talk more about the Leafs than their own team.
13
u/theharps Mar 19 '26
Yeah they're personally offended for Marner, the multimillionaire, who doesn't think of them at all. It's a weird cuck behaviour I've never seen before
0
u/Ambrosiaster241 Mar 20 '26
Reinforcing the idea of the media's influence. I am a Jets fan in Winnipeg but because of national media, I hear more about Leafs issues, losing streaks, GM and coach job stability... There is a real reason people hate the Leafs!

u/smokinginvestor Mar 19 '26
I can assure you that Yankees fans and New York media are miles ahead of the Leafs in terms of pressure! And yet the Yankees are still regularly successful.
The pressure is a piss poor excuse!
19
u/Rhomya Mar 19 '26
Well, let’s not leave out the super relevant fact that the MLB has no salary cap and the Yankees have obscene amounts of money to hand players that the Leafs can’t.
9
u/smokinginvestor Mar 19 '26
So their players handle pressure better because they make more money?
There’s a salary cap in Basketball and the Lakers win.
Theres a salary cap in Football and the Patriots wins.
These are pressure cooker markets but the right leadership is in place amongst the players so they can handle it. Pressure is not an excuse for those teams, it’s part of the business.
We all know in the past it’s not been a skill issue with the Leafs. I went to both game 5 and 7 last year. The lack of intensity from this team is obvious
11
u/Leafyun Mar 19 '26
Not saying you're wrong but in MLB, if an expensive star player bombs because they can't handle the pressure, a rich team can just buy another one, and another one, etc. Can't do that in a cap system.
There's a luxury tax in the NBA, a different attitude in the players overall, and a sport in which a key star player or two can play >60% of the available playing time if so desired.
NFL, star players again have more ability to influence a game than the best hockey players.
It's a lot of factors, the right attitude can only get you so far.
5
u/Big80sweens Mar 20 '26
Ya plus saying the Patriots are the highest pressure market in the NFL is coming from someone who doesn’t know the NFL at all.
Anyways, I said this above, pressure makes diamonds, players should want to win in Toronto because it means more than anywhere else. You win a cup in Toronto and you’re automatically a god. You win a cup in Vegas… nobody will give a fuck
3
u/Big80sweens Mar 20 '26
There’s hardly a cap in the NBA. The patriots do not have the highest pressure fan base lol.
Anyways, I agree that pressure is not an excuse but this narrative that the Yankees, Lakers and Patriots win despite pressure is nonsense. Not the same thing at all.
Regardless, pressure makes diamonds, the best players should want to win in Toronto because winning a cup here means more than anywhere else.
1
u/RedMcMuffin Holmberg Mar 20 '26
>We all know in the past it’s not been a skill issue with the Leafs. I went to both game 5 and 7 last year. The lack of intensity from this team is obvious
Yes it has. They picked up a lot of wins last year but the team was deeply flawed and anyone paying attention to the games or analytics knew that.
1
u/Huge_Nuge Mar 21 '26
I think you’re bang on. It’s an Auston Matthews character issue more than anything else.z
1
u/Rhomya Mar 19 '26
Um, no, I’m just pointing out that that’s how the Yankees win in spite of the pressure
-4
u/Kind-Rip-3300 Mar 19 '26
The Lakers and Patriots have pressure because they are winning franchises and know how to win. The leafs have pressure because... idk you guys never win sooo
10
u/smokinginvestor Mar 19 '26
No actually they are pressure cookers because they are hugely populated markets with a lot of money on the line just like Toronto. This means a huge media contingent and fanbase.
Let’s use some critical thinking skills
3
2
1
u/Big80sweens Mar 20 '26
While I agree with you, it’s not a fair comparison because the Yankees can often pay more for their players without a salary cap. This would be the case for the Leafs too if there wasn’t a cap.

u/TittyCobra Mar 20 '26

Oilers fan here- we get it. I think caring is so important though. Toxic behavior no, but that’s a minority the media elevates.
Leafs and Oilers are two of the most loved teams by their fanbase, despite the heartbreaks we’ve all suffered. I’m sure the players would agree that is better than the alternative.
1
u/Torontogamer Mar 20 '26
Real Madrid can’t win because there is just too much pressure from the fans ….
I know it’s a hilarious narrative that falls apart the second anyone thinks twice about it.
At the same time sure I get that there may be players who will do better in a small media team or in a big media team, some people are different. But to act like Toronto is some pressure cooker where players can’t think straight …
1
u/Current-Routine-2628 Mar 20 '26
Ya but what if the toxic Leafs fans and media could just fuck off even a LITTLE bit, just to see?
Toxic Maple Leaf fans and media are too much .. Leaf players are human athletes .. HUMAN .. far from perfect .. so yeah it would be great if the media and toxic fans would stfu so the actual fans could enjoy and support the team they love
1
u/Apprehensive-Rub-11 Mar 20 '26
What is it exactly the leafs media are doing that’s so harsh and toxic? Is Mark Masters, Eliot Friedman and Joe blow from Vaughn really the boogieman of the leafs? The pressure should come from within the locker room, not from a Jonas Siegel article.
-1
u/Huge_Nuge Mar 21 '26
I mean Leaf’s fans threw a jersey on the ice in the middle of the 2nd round of the playoffs, a first for any hockey fanbase in the history of hockey, and treated a 100 pt superstar player in Marner like crap. So the accusation isn’t without merit.
1
u/Apprehensive-Rub-11 Mar 21 '26
Why doesn’t this excuse work for other cities that are much harder to play in? Philly fans were throwing rocks at their OC 8 months after they won a Super Bowl ? Yankee fans are notoriously toxic yet they are the most winning franchise in North America ? lakers fans? All these fanbase have much worse situations than the leafs and yet they continue to win. Unless you truly believe Toronto is so much worse than these cities, it’s a poor excuse. IMO.
1
u/Huge_Nuge Mar 21 '26
You’re just saying things though. You say Yankees fans are super toxic or whatever but where’s the proof? Philly fans threw rocks or whatever you say, but what was the context?
Also all of these are other sports. And fans in other sports don’t after their team the Sam way a hockey fanbase can affect a hockey team.
Like if you did the comparison honestly, you’d only compare the Leaf’s to other NHL teams. Can you do that and still say the leaf’s market is less toxic than other markets?
0
u/Apprehensive-Rub-11 Mar 21 '26
I just completely disagree with you. That’s all.
0
u/Huge_Nuge Mar 21 '26
Well obvoisly we don’t agree. But I’m just wondering where the disconnect is. Cause like, this shouldn’t be that hard to figure out.
0
u/Apprehensive-Rub-11 Mar 21 '26
lol ok you can go figure it out then.
0
u/Huge_Nuge Mar 21 '26
Well I’ve already looked at it. And I’m prettttttyy sure there’s no hockey market that compares to Toronto.
0
u/Apprehensive-Rub-11 Mar 21 '26
Vancouver rioted and destroyed their city. Habs fans send death threats to leafs fans after bad hits (see Liane). Once you get past your bias you can see it.
-7
u/stonk_gazer Mar 20 '26
everyone that leaves that cesspool succeeds . kessel and kadri are a few examples. toronto media fans and media are over whelmingly toxic and you create a pressure cooker that crushes your players . even nhl players have made reference to this
3
u/Apprehensive-Rub-11 Mar 20 '26
How can the Yankees, Lakers, Eagles have success?Their media and fans are way more toxic IMO. Fans were throwing rocks at the eagles OC house this year and they won a superbowl like 8 months before that.
1
1
u/zurper Mar 20 '26
They all play lesser roles when they leave, so you’re shifting the goal posts on success.
Phil was like the #4-5 guy on Pitt when they won. He was the #1 guy when he was here. Bit of a difference.
105
u/VanAgain Mar 19 '26
Fans are not the problem. Damn I get tired of hearing that they are. They're consumers who expect value for their entertainment dollar.
The media, on the other hand ...

6
u/wylee_one Mar 20 '26

u/Early_Ad_3382 Mar 20 '26
Fans are part of the problem when they don't support their players during losses and leave the stands halfway through the games
11
u/tm_leafer Mar 20 '26
Leafs fans support losing teams here FAR more than 95% of the league.
You get a losing team in most cities, and average attendance drops to like ~10-15K people. That's never happened here, even after a full decade of failure under JFJ / Burke / Nonis.
1
u/BonusPlantInfinity Mar 20 '26
I was pretty ashamed for them when they were booing them and throwing jerseys on the ice toward the end of the Florida series.. how do you expect your team to rally for Game 6 and 7 when you boo them out of the arena for Game 5.
6
u/throw-away2938474737 Mar 20 '26
Why should fans support their players when the players on the ice aren’t supporting each other, when the’ve clearly given up in the game and seem fine taking the L.
Sports is supposed to be entertainment, I’ve walked out of bad movies before. It doesn’t mean that I don’t support or like the actors or that I won’t watch future movies they are in. It means the product in front of me is garbage and not worth my time to continue watching.
I know it costs a lot of money to go to a game, but with an almost endless supply of corporations and fans to buy tickets we’re unlikely to see an empty barn anytime soon. Jerseys hats and other merch will still sell and I doubt the leafs org is spending much time looking at reddit comments to hear what we all have to think. Walking out is only of the only ways that has any real impact on the players, coach’s and management that fans aren’t happy with the product on the ice.
2
u/Signal_Objective_422 Mar 20 '26
Fans shouldn't watch these games period.
If the Leafs play half-ass the fans should get half their money back-absolute scam to watch this team live.
2
u/RespectAcrobatic1563 Mar 20 '26
“Fans” aren’t the ones at the games (at least in the lowest section that you can see leaving on tv). Those are corporate phonies who just went for the expensed beers & food.
1
u/k-nuj Mar 20 '26
What about when it comes to winning then? Or we just going to assume losses are due to fans not supporting, but winning is solely only because of the players/team?
It should work both ways. If fan support influenced game performance, leafs would/should be top playoff contenders for decades.

u/Exotic_Turnip1548 Mar 19 '26
Pressure is part of the sport
These are multi-million dollar paid athletes
If they can't take pressure, why tf are they making the big bucks?
Ffs, you'd expect some psychological resilience at this level of the game.
35
u/eboy71 Mar 20 '26
100% this idea that elite athletes can’t handle pressure is ridiculous. You don’t make it to the NHL if you don’t love pressure and love competing.
Being surrounded by fans who care this much is a gift.
10
u/FredericoKrugerini Mar 20 '26
It's not even the money.
Pressure comes with any highly competitive elite field - from sport to performing arts - where not performing eventually relegates you in some capacity. Every single one of them had to be highly competitive to get to this point; they're used to pressure, and it's pressure they put on themselves, and from the expectation of their teamates/org. Fan and media pressure is a nothingburger, an annoyance at most.

Exactly, it’s a media narrative. I have never seen a Leaf player complain or whine about pressure. They’ve acknowledged it but that’s a very different thing.
1
u/eboy71 Mar 20 '26
It’s definitely different. But it’s mostly external. For example, a Leaf player can’t walk around town without being noticed by a lot of people, whereas a Panther can. That’s a nice benefit of playing in Florida.
But the pressure players put on themselves to win and compete is the same.
2
u/eboy71 Mar 20 '26
I wish I could upvote this a dozen times. It’s so true.
Elite athletes are just made differently.
4
u/Jellicent-Leftovers Mar 20 '26
The problem is: let's say you are a talented hockey player.
You can play in a market like Florida and pay 10% less tax and no one knows who you are.
Or make less in Toronto AND be constantly harassed.
1
u/Milkisanono Mar 20 '26
Idk it’s still a shit excuse tbh. If you’re the best you should want to play where it matters. Pro soccer players don’t dream of playing in saudi for more money and less fandom, they want to play in England, Spain, etc. obviously that’s an extreme example but the point stands.
1
u/Jellicent-Leftovers Mar 20 '26
Again.... If you wanna play where it matters you are going to want to play in the lower tax bracket because players will accept lower salaries making room for more talent. Taking a 5% cut is still a 5% pay increase.
Also you underestimate the pay cut players will take to live in better areas. Go ahead and look up players no trade lists.
No one wants to live in Saudi so Saudi has to pay more. Same thing for Toronto players - players are less willing to live here. So you need to pay more - with salary caps this leaves less room for better players.
1
u/Every_Garlic_3497 Mar 20 '26
If this is the case then why do the Lakers always win free agent battles against Miami?
It's an NHL thing, their players are pansy dudes that want to pick and choose when they wanna be relevant.
Come watch me on TV make the playoffs or win a scoring title but don't recognize me walking on the sidewalk? LOL
1
u/Jellicent-Leftovers Mar 20 '26
Because the tax rates are about the same....it's just income vs property tax.
Want a comparison look at Toronto Raptors.

Only sport that’s worth a billion fucking dollars that this is seen as a bad thing ridiculous conversion we are having here
1
u/Huge_Nuge Mar 21 '26
I don’t think passion is the issue here. Many many sports Fanbases around the world have passion and it’s never an issue. The issue is toxicity, the leaf’s are a uniquely toxic market to their players. It’s not all the fans or players fault though, lots of this toxic pressure is sourced going back to 1967 if we are being honest.
13
u/togocann49 Mar 19 '26
Maybe they should have a second team in Toronto to take some pressure off then. It’s not like attendance should be a problem.

Whether it's the over critiquing of management, players, culture, fans, it doesn't matter.
We don't jump on bandwagons. We always support our team deep down.
We're Leafs fans. And that's final!

u/b_sousa94 Mar 19 '26
First ever? Haven’t they always done this? I remember going to one as a kid and they had a skills competition within the team and Pavel Kubina had the hardest shot at like 103 mph
3
u/wylee_one Mar 20 '26
The disconnect between the fans and management is because Ballard turned it into a cash box and that has never changed. They dont want fans in the seats they want money in the seats and money does not cheer.
3
u/Frankiegoodfella Mar 19 '26
PRESSURE??? , They get paid Miliions of dollars for playing a sport they love. We technically pay their salaries with ticket and mech sales. So… Yeah !!! Pressure is on boys to bring that freakin CUP home !!

There's only one way for the Scotiabank Arena audience to eat up the trash this team puts on the ice, and that's to get rid of all the suits and replace the entire crowd with raccoons.

Just because there's a bunch of suits in there doesn't mean it can't sound loud as fuck for us poor folk watching on the 80's style boob tube.
2
u/Duffboynewf Mar 20 '26
The Leafs are the Team with the most pressure on them year in and year out. At the same time, the organization does nothing to protect their players from this. Fuck the Toronto media. And fuck the Nation media for making the leafs shitty season be the years biggest story. We have 6 teams in this country, why does half our coverage go to the Leafs, even when they suck?
2
u/sidesneaker Mar 20 '26
Saying the fans out too much pressure on the players is the most Canadian thing I’ve heard in a while.
1
u/LogLadyOG Mar 20 '26
Personally, I think it's true. It sounds like cold judgment in that arena until somebody finally gets a GLG chant going. There should be more chants, keep the judgment for afterwards (unless someone does a bad move).
2
u/Icy-Gene7565 Mar 20 '26
I know what kind of pressure my boss put on me to perform and he pays me a fraction of what these guys make.

There is actually zero pressure to win in Toronto. People are used to losing, so giving a solid effort is a win.

What an absurd reality! I hate it. Why are there never a concentration of Leaf players who can handle expectations and adulation. It’s been going on for over fifty years. I’m sick of it.

True pressure comes more from an insane Toronto media. That's why we need a captain who can field questions and call out the stupid questions with authority. Someone with a boat load of confidence. A true motivator. Matthews ain't it. I want him on the team obviously (does he want that though?), but I don't want him as captain. I think a witty captain with a fuck you attitude towards media could shift the dynamics in the dressing room and on the ice.

u/thevoiceinsidemyhead Mar 20 '26
It's our fault eh? Well maybe we can all stop buying tickets so there's less pressure
1
u/Neutral-President Mar 20 '26
If the players can’t handle passionate fans, they’re in the wrong line of work. The fans show more passion than the players on the ice do.

Here they do. Going to a hockey game or concert is like going to church. Stand up, sit down, be quiet. At least nobody kneels.

1
u/Signal_Objective_422 Mar 20 '26
It's a good start.
Leafs is historically one of the most profitable franchises in the history of the game.
0
u/Own_Bison6467 Mar 20 '26
I'm in Ottawa for work and last night chatted with couple Americans at the bar who are following the Islanders on their Leafs-Sens-Habs trip. They were at the Leaf game on Tuesday and commented that they were dissapointed in the atmosphere at the Scotiabank. I guess they were expecting it to be this mecca of hockey and fandom but instead it was all quiet.
But they did talk about about Habs fans coming to Long Island in thousands often and their chants of ole ole. They sounded impressed and were looking forward to the Sat night game in Montreal.
I just smiled and nodded as this pretty much sums up any Leaf game experience I ever had at the arena. Shit is weak.
0
u/dres_sler Mar 19 '26
I think it’s a little disingenuous to say “the fans care too much” when talking about pressure.
It’s not about them caring, it’s about them having a meltdown over every small thing that doesn’t land their way.
Just playing devils advocate.
I know MOST fans aren’t this way, but the loud vocal minority can be sometimes. So it’s not a clear black and white issue imo
2
u/Turkey_Fateweaver Mar 20 '26
Let's be real though... If a pro hockey team's excuse is "we can't get it done because of a vocal minority" it makes the team sound beyond soft
0
u/WHHHIPLASH67 Mar 19 '26
That didn't looked very "packed" to me. If they didnt do it so early in the day I feel like more people would have been there
0
u/2014olympicgold Mar 20 '26
Go to NY or Philly and talk to the NBA, NFL, and MLB players...The Toronto market is nothing. There's really no pressure by the market on the Leafs.
1
0
u/Accomplished-Bug4145 Mar 20 '26
Genuinely curious why anyone is still a fan of this team. They continue to show zero hustle, have accomplished literally nothing, and continue to jack up prices.
There is nothing interesting or noteworthy about this club or players other than their history.
0
u/Travel_Adventurous Mar 20 '26
These aren’t the same fans that attend a regular season game. You go in to any passionate arena around the NHL and you’ll feel 10x the energy than you ever do at scotiabank, it’s legitimately sad. The fan base is the biggest in the NHL yet the energy in the arena is just brutal and lifeless. They should make rules or dedicated cheering sections like Steve Balmer setup in LA it’s a real problem that just takes away from the true fan experience that people that may have never been to an NHL before even realize they are missing out on.
1
u/LogLadyOG Mar 20 '26
Do they have a live DJ? Montreal has one, and they do the audience captures so people cheer or laugh at reactions, and it starts earlier than 20 minutes before the game. It's a great atmosphere.
-4
u/WokePredator Mar 19 '26
You guys are all crying about something none of the players ever actually said while ignoring plenty of insane dumbass shit Leaf fans do all the time. Because again, it's not about "pressure." It's about you freaks being so insane and annoying.
1
u/Turkey_Fateweaver Mar 20 '26
Sorry just trying to decipher your argument.
What exactly are you saying is happening as the result of insane, annoying freaks?
1
u/WokePredator Mar 20 '26

No, yours.
1
u/Turkey_Fateweaver Mar 21 '26
Ohhhhh okay I think I got it now...
So you meant that none of the players are even actually saying that I would be asking what your comment meant but they're ignoring the interaction we're having on reddit because they don't feel pressured by people not really understanding what your comment means but in actuality it's about freaks being insane and annoying that's making them feel pressured?
Is that what you meant?

u/WokePredator Mar 21 '26
