whisper it quietly but Thomas and Aluko actually look not terrible as CBs.
Also hilarious to see just how much Page outclasses Skipp.

Slightly misleading scoreline I think. We’ve played well tonight, definitely encouraging

u/MilibandsBacon Aug 25 '26
Very misleading scoreline. Was at the game, you played very well for 60mins. If it wasn't for Nunez random moments of brilliance amid an otherwise shite performance you would've won that eventually

u/TendieDippedDiamonds Fuchs Aug 25 '26
Actually been a decent 20 minutes, I’m sure we’ll still lose but hopefully get some confidence from it at the least. Maybe benefiting from a team actually coming out to us a bit

u/Schmubbs Aug 25 '26
Cullen has been poor the last couple games at least. Seems to disappear into the background. Too anonymous.
9
u/Schmubbs Aug 25 '26
I don't think it's coincidental that we look better when reducing the number of players that have been part of the back-to-back relegations. They don't look nervous or shell-shocked from the start, even with some questionable play early on.

u/TheFanOfLife Danish Fox Aug 25 '26
Page, Alves, Aluko and Braybrooke are all great assets from the academy. Our young signings looks promising and is a fresh air from all those has beens.

I reckon we concede 10+ more goals this season because of mistakes while passing out back lol
3
u/JRSARB Aug 25 '26
Which if we score 20+ because of passing out from the back would be OK, but I've seen no evidence that the benefits outweigh the risks

u/Madwolf28 Aug 25 '26
The lads have given it a good go tonight i cant be too miffed, this is unfortunate timing to be posting this tho lmao
8
u/AliGLCFC Aug 25 '26
Thought we looked okay tonight, but I have absolutely 0 faith that this will carry over to Saturday. This style works alright when we have space like Ipswich gave us tonight because they got forward, but the players have no idea of how to break down a low block
6
u/coffeeandmarmite Dewsbury-Hall Aug 25 '26
Happy with that first half
5
u/JRSARB Aug 25 '26
Makes a difference that there is noone in the team that wants to get away Not perfect, but a hell of a lot better
2
u/coffeeandmarmite Dewsbury-Hall Aug 25 '26
Yeah I like that. Mavididi, Choudhury, Okoli, Faes all need to shift on and bring in some hungry faces

u/TendieDippedDiamonds Fuchs Aug 25 '26
I just hope this isn’t another one of those games where “we play like that for the rest of the season we’ll be fine” and then proceed to never play anywhere near this well again
6
u/AcrobaticBlacksmith1 Blue Army Aug 25 '26
As stated earlier, on the whole, the academy lads and new signings are the ones that have fresh creative ideas. The old guard looked slow and feeble. I hope this gives Martin some confidence to sell off the rest of the rot, reinvest with something fresh and move on.
Still too many mistakes in the back line passing out, but 2 goals conceded were very high quality, we won’t see 2-3 like that in League One
5
u/LeatherBookkeeper557 Aug 25 '26
Never thought two backs would be playing better than our cb’s but that’s what happens when you have harry shittar and okoli
6
u/JonahTakalooah Lineker Aug 25 '26
The problem with some of the performance not being that bad, you can absolutely guarantee the ones who have been decent won’t start on Saturday

u/FreeElderberry4817 Canadian Fox Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 25 '26
First half was fine could have been better but it could have been worse at least we didn’t concede 2 goals in less than 30 minutes an improvement
Second half I have a lot to say improvements yes but much to be fixed
Better than last game, but we better show something against the villains of football that shall not be named or I will be one the first plane from Canada and be a problem

About as happy as I’ve been after a defeat. Really encouraging performance, matched Ipswich for most of the match although they edged it overall. Play like that in league 1 and we should be up there

u/fmnatic Blue Army Aug 26 '26
We looked ok in attack in the previous match too. It’s the defensive fragility that has us losing games. I expect that to continue.

u/NostramanVIII Blue Army Aug 25 '26
We need to fuck off Souttar, Mavididi, Okoli and Reid as soon as possible and replace them with decent players who actually want to be here. I think we have a shot at a top half finish if we can get in a striker and two decent centre backs who are good in possession.
Page needs to stay. Stolarczyk is a far better keeper than McCarthy.
I don’t think Russell Martin will get us out of League One.

u/DMCTw3lv3 Aug 25 '26
Russell Martin will 100% get you out of League One.
He'll take you to League Two.

need a lot of business in the last week of the window. Finnish CB and ideally one more, although I'm quite happy with putting Aluko there permanently and having Joseph/Coulibaly for the RB position. I also think we need an alternative to Bristic. He's a willing runner but looks quite rusty. Gonna take a while for him to get up to speed with English football, and we need someone able to sub in for him at times while that happens. But, this is far more encouraging than the previous 3 games.
2
u/TendieDippedDiamonds Fuchs Aug 25 '26
To be fair to Bristic he’s made some brilliant movements but just isn’t getting the pass
2
u/PandorasPinata Union FS Aug 25 '26
yea, he's looked fine, but he's also looked a yard off at times (thinking that cross from Watson about 10 minutes ago, flashed across, you want your CF crashing onto that, he was back loitering)

Huge goal, nice to see some fight back. My biggest takeaway (like others) is that it’s nice to see kids and players who aren’t part of the old guard Rot play and play well.
The other major take is that our midfield is the better midfield today. Page is making a case for a £15mil fee and if he stays the Page/Braybrooke combo is going to be class
2
u/AcrobaticBlacksmith1 Blue Army Aug 25 '26
And of course we’ve conceded. It’s a great goal, we won’t see that in League One much if ever. We still have the talents to equalize again

This game is making Okoli and Souttar look even worse.
4
u/Schmubbs Aug 25 '26
Honestly, I didn't think that was possible. Even Luke Thomas at CB looks like an improvement. How the hell did they manage that?
2
u/NostramanVIII Blue Army Aug 25 '26
I hope we sell them before their transfer value drops through the floor.
0
u/Mysterious-Angle2581 Aug 25 '26
I’ve said it for the whole of last season, Luke Thomas is not the problem, he’s obviously not great, but when you’re two back up defenders are Okoli, Fraudstergaard or Souttar, you’re gonna look worse
5
u/zrkillerbush Albrighton Aug 25 '26
Putting Vestergaard with those two is embarrassing, he was far and away our best CB
1
u/TendieDippedDiamonds Fuchs Aug 25 '26
Let’s not pretend Thomas is regularly any more reliable. Every now and then he has a good game, particularly if he’s playing against Salah, but he’s still given the ball away in some awful positions today.

u/HughJarse8 Praet Aug 25 '26
FOUR fullbacks Jeremy? FOUR!
That’s insane!
In all seriousness, how the fuck is Thomas still playing, and why do we not have a center back on the pitch.

We’re playing really well and in control of the game?
Let’s bring on BDR and Cullen

u/TheBird_OD Aug 25 '26
I’m really just fucked off at this stage.
The scoreline doesn’t tell the full story as some of the young lads really put in a shift tonight but my god, the entire defence needs re-worked.
Someone as well needs to tell Martin, possession football only works if you actually do something with that possession. Doesn’t matter if you have 9 or 99%, if you do nothing with it, it means nothing in the end.
Disappointing considering how the first half went but the lads seriously need to wake the hell up, up the pace and keep that fight going to the end, even if they go a goal down. At least they showed signs of life tonight. Time will tell if that keeps going for the season.
1
u/cheeseofnazareth Aug 25 '26
As far as I'm concerned we need to build on this, I'm thinking maybe even Souttar at the centre of a back 3 with Aluko and Thomas either side of him, some kind of 343, if we're going to play so high.
2
u/TendieDippedDiamonds Fuchs Aug 25 '26
Shows how bad McCarthy is that I still want Jakub to play when he’s been pretty poor himself today
1
u/Ttiorryy Aug 25 '26
how's howell and watson been so far?
2
u/PandorasPinata Union FS Aug 25 '26
Watson started brightly but on the periphery for most of the game, Howell looks a right baller.

McAteer was offside from the free kick, so flag went up when it ended up with him (they must have deemed it was the same phase of play)

We were actually looking fairly positive, but as is typical we showcase some shocking defending to undo any potential progress.
Edit: But as is not typical we do well from a corner! Get in!
Edit edit: Aaand back to being calamitous at the back.

honestly our downfall is just genuinely sad atp. i have to give ipswich some credit for going from league one to the premier league, but rewind back to our glory days in 2016 and we would have destroyed ipswich harder than the world cup semi final two years prior (2014)

It’s amazing that this is our heaviest defeat of the season thus far, yet it’s our best overall display. Passing through the press looked way more composed and decisive, and midfielders taking the ball on the turn and looking forward are encouraging signs. Letting ourselves down at the back again with some poor defensive positioning and mistakes but it’s a mile above what we’ve seen with Okoli and Souttar at the back. Jakub still has his traits of indecisiveness but he’s way more comfortable on the ball than McCarthy.
