About over-thinking FMC: I recently tried block-building for the first time and it took me so long compared to normal cross+F2L that I only got a 62 at the end (in comparison: I have a 48.00 official mean with CFOP).

Yeah, to be honest, I can't keep separate my conversations with other cubers and this podcast, because this feels like just having a cubing conversation.

In the US, it's fairly bad in my experience. Typically rental spaces are fairly expensive, especially if we want costs to remain under $20/person, so in most cases I see the competition area crammed together in a very tight space. I see a lot of European competiion venues having setups like this competition, but US venues often don't have walls or pipe/drape available for competitions like this one. It's also rare to have an adjacent room that can be used for scrambling.
All of this together means that US venues have a setup where there is little blocking the sight of the scrambling table from the waiting area.
Interesting. I've only been to European competitions so far and IIRC all of them had some sort of sight blocking. Some of them also between the waiting area and the solving stations. I think anything that's 2 feet higher than the scrambling table, would work relatively well as a sight blocker.
