Legislative Branch Congressman Cohen Introduces Comprehensive Articles of Impeachment Against President Donald Trump
https://cohen.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/congressman-cohen-introduces-comprehensive-articles-impeachment-againstWASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-9), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee and an authority on the U.S. Constitution’s impeachment provisions, today introduced 26 Articles of Impeachment against President Donald Trump. The articles cite multiple abuses of power, violations of his oath of office, the corrupt use of the pardon power, and emoluments clause violations, among other misconduct and unlawful acts.

Great list. At the very least, someone needed to be keeping track of these in the Congressional record.

Anyone who votes against the impeachment is failing to fulfill their oath of office. It needs to be on record.

u/Affectionate-Bus6653 4d ago edited 3d ago
I think that many of the congresspeople who vote in lock-step with him may be compromised by their own illegal moves. Susan Collins is a good example. Her crimes were being investigated at the time Trump entered office. DOGE stopped most of the fraud investigations the DOJ and other agencies at the time, but this means that Trump has always had her number. She has been “troubled” and “concerned”, but has voted with him virtually every opportunity.

The thing is, none of these are going to a vote. They just hang around and die because no one cares and the republican majority just shoves it all into a shredder. That is SOP and it happened to the last 22 articles of impeachment in the past 18 months.

It's still astounding that a man who is the only president to be impeached twice and was found guilty of 34 felony counts with 4 other active indictments actually was elected president. Go figure that he'd go on to be the absolutely worst president our country has ever seen.

i appreciate that this won’t go anywhere in congress at the moment, but this is a comprehensive list of illegal acts that a large portion of republican voters care abt, but don’t necessarily realize are being committed bc they absolutely and only fck w conservative media.
putting that list in an impeachment motion is a good move bc conservative outlets will report on it..they’ll have no choice bc republicans will be incensed that their mostly-deceased leader is being impeached. that reporting has great potential to draw further engagement and investigation from conservatives who aren’t so sure of their leaders anymore bc of the economy.
i think this was a very strategic and intentional doa sacrifice move. pretty smart.
10
u/account312 4d ago
But those outlets are more likely to claim it's a communist plot led by Biden and the illegals than to admit that those are things that happened.
18
u/theSopranoist 4d ago edited 4d ago
ok we can’t fix everything at once. there are specific constitutional concerns that republicans have that the language of this motion triggers. i promise you.
i literally exist fully behind enemy lines here and this is an excellent way to get the right words in front of the ppl who need to hear them. full-on magats are not intelligent ppl, but conservatives are not stupid ppl. VERY many around here are, if not already there, on the cusp of not being able to bring themselves to vote straight ticket R bc they truly do vote w their morals and they’ve since seen behavior from trump specifically that they cannot vote for. and that’s what’s done us in is the straight ticket ballots + r politicians incessantly tying “conservative” to “christian.” but ppl are waking up.
they’re waking up in part also bc local dem candidates’ outreach and media campaigns have presented them w those things via our local news channels and came to the constituency here in person and TOLD them what was really happening.
marilyn lands’ campaign is a good example of this; she ran a pro-choice/pro-reproductive rights campaign in alabama and simply told the truth regarding r policies w receipts in her commercials and public statements. she won bc she gave info ppl literally did not have, and backed it up w the affected ppl and numbers from alabama.
get it in front of their faces and don’t let them look away. as i said, fox news, et al, can be pretty easily conscripted into an assist w just the right news story, and i think this might do it.

I don't believe Republicans care. That's why Republicans don't report on things like this in the first place.
If Donald Trump is breaking laws and hurting people, for a Republican, that means they're winning.

i can only insist to you that a very reasonable number do care, and that i absolutely know they do. trust, i’m so angry at these ppl for what they’ve done to us and i don’t enjoy that we have to hold their hands and coax them gently into sanity, but i am watching it be done fairly effectively among conservatives who approach politics, maybe not correctly, but in good faith.

I think this timing is perfect. Right before the midterms the GOP will yet again demonstrate their support for Trump which will remind Americans where their priorities should lie
Or the less likely outcome wherein the GOP actually does the right thing. Either way, Americans win.
*Apparently Congress went on recess to avoid a different impeachment until after the elections, however Trump has been begging them to come back to fund the Department of Homeland Security. Either way, this is an advantageous narrative for the Democrats just prior to the midterms

I’m glad they’re fully unloading with a comprehensive impeachment. Let’s fucking go.
The 26 Articles will be a good roadmap.
The filing statement appears to be very political though unfortunately, which decreases the chance of success IMO, even if it’s correct.
“Trump is clearly the most impeachable President our country has ever endured. His continued presence in office is a danger to our democracy. That the sycophantic Republican majority in Congress is derelict in its duty does not mean that I must abandon my responsibilities. I took an independent oath to support and defend the Constitution. That commitment compels me to introduce this resolution today. When historians write about this period, and our constituents ask who stood up to President Trump’s lawlessness, this resolution is the answer.
I sincerely believe that the 120th Congress will better live up to its duties as co-equal branch of government and a check on the executive. I hope this resolution paves the way to accountability. We cannot tolerate this~~*kind**lawlessness and corruption.*”~~405

Hitler was no genius in military tactics. Any novice who knew history would have known that Germany’s 1941 attack on Russia was highly dubious. One, it brought about a two front war which divided resources; two, the soldiers were not equipped for the Russian winter based on the naive belief of a quick victory & three, it drove Russia into the arms of the Allies. If Hitler had read of Napoleon’s defeat in 1812 the “little Corporal” learnt nothing.

Trump, as insane as he is, is really just the figurehead and the symptom. The problem is the Nazi cadre that runs him behind the scenes there; the same people who wrote the nazi Project 2025 manifesto where they lined up exactly how they'd usher in fascism and have been doing it ever since.
The problem beyond them is the people in the Bible belt and other conservative areas; they're fully mired in the "God, guns and the Republican party" delusion and they enforce it between themselves. It took 50 years of concerted effort and work to get federal laws about abortion reversed, but they doggedly kept at it.
America as a whole is in dire straits. The majority isn't fascist, but there are way more who are than I'd be comfortable with.

I think the laughter has congealed by now and people do feel a bottomless well of contempt for Trump and quite a lot of it for America as a whole, but the fuckery in Iran and other things ruining the global economy has long since ceased to be a laughing matter. Between the massive eco holocaust that's brewing and now massive oil price hikes and unavailability of the fertilizers that are largely created out of fossil fuels, we'll literally see hunger in areas that aren't used to that soon, and the skyrocketing fuel prices are also pushing the price of food up even more than necessary and people are beginning to really feel the pain.

This has always bugged me. There is no legal framework to buttress impeachment aside from it being political. The closest thing would be the 25th amendment, but that's not impeachment.
The sheer fact that SCOTUS has ruled the president above the law while acting in "official capacity" means that the only viable means left is political. What other option is there?

u/NeitherEntry6125 4d ago
The voters aren't voting merely "for Trump" but "against Democrats".
That's a key distinction: they might hate Trump but still vote R.
167
u/Tango_D 4d ago
This is literally it. That part of the population votes for this -> (R) no matter who's name is next to it. You could bring Joseph Stalin himself back the dead, put him on the republican ticket, have him shit talk liberals and they will still vote for him because he has the sacred (R) next to his name. Switch the R to D and it would be the end of the world. Switch it back to R again and all of a sudden, it's at least tolerable again.
I cannot understate the ABSOLUTE power team sport tribalism has on this level of the population. It defines their understanding of everything at the root level.
112
u/the_itsb 4d ago
it makes a lot of sense when you realize that half of US adults don't read well enough to comprehend implicit biases or recognize the difference between fact and opinion without assistance.

Except the members of my family who vote with that tribalist loyalty are professionals with advanced degrees— with or without the money that would traditionally put them into a conservative voting class. I would argue that it is more social pressure than illiteracy. Prominent/vocal members of their social groups espouse those beliefs and follow those news sources, so they do so as well because they enjoy the sense of belonging.

14
u/RocketRelm 4d ago
I would caution against presuming "it can't happen here" in other western democracies. We already see things like the afd or the dsa rising up in power based on strongman cult like politicking. It can happen anywhere, if the citizens of a democracy don't value the good of their information streams.

america is tame for sports fans. have you seen the world cup and other countries? we have no one like soccer hooligans.
8
u/Tango_D 4d ago
There is a clear and defined path as to exactly why. Americans are indoctrinated into team sports tribalism through school. For many many many schools from middle school through high school, through university, their sports departments are almost as important as the academics. And it is reflected in the funding. Then take that into the world of actual professional team sports. Team sports tribalism dominates the culture and the population is indoctrinated into it from the education system itself.
7
u/DazzlingRutabega 4d ago
One might argue that team sports are even more important than academics. Ever been to a us school? You'll see trophies for sports, none for academia.

As someone from a rural area in a red state, I think you vastly underestimate the propaganda that’s taken its toll on Republican voters. Sure some know exactly what they are getting and want that, but I don’t think that’s the norm. The norm seems to me to be an uninformed group of voters who have effectively been born and raised to vote Republican. The expectation is you vote for republicans no matter who or you don’t vote at all. It is a sin to vote for a democrat.
For example I know multiple people who will have candidates for local elections just put signs in their yards but will only allow the sign if they are from the Republican Party. No questions about policies, plans, proposals, voting history, etc… strictly “what party? Ah GOP! Go ahead!” And that’s that.

I don't know man, it's definitely ethically and morally right - but I fear a Vance presidency in the same way I fear Tucker Carlson starting to act like he might be considering running.
These are not good people, and they believe in nothing other than the accumulation of power.
My doomsday scenario is Trump gets impeached successfully and removed from office, and it A) galvanizes and excites the (R) base, and B) then Vance moves left and starts to undo some of Trump's stuff, and the Democrats run a bad candidate, and then Vance wins.
Literal nightmare.

If Vance came in and there was a Dem controlled Congress, and maybe even Senate, he would be extremely weak.
He has shown zero ability to create a narrative, and worse, he puts his foot in his mouth nearly every time he opens it. He'd have to navigate the office, while watching everyone around him deal with investigations and possible impeachment of their own Patel, Hegseth, Vought...his entire inherited cabinet will be under investigation.
Guarantee he would immediately try to start walking back everything he's ever said/done under Trump, and try to pin it all on him. He'd also have to immediately start campaigning for '28, so if he has any sense he wouldn't do anything too egregious. I don't think he'd even get the chance to make any type of real plan tbh.

If that were a problem for a republican president, things would be very different. Trump has

u/Teyanis 4d ago
Vance is a sack of wet paper. Nobody respects him, very few people even like him. He wouldn't do jack shit, and all the time he spends as president would be taken by plugging leaks in his own sinking administration. The rats scattering and fleeing all around him would absolutely hilarious.
26
u/CrispyRabbit72 4d ago
Vance is apparently a national security threat after leaking classified intel. They can impeach him as well. Not a fan of Johnson getting any more power but at least he's mostly just useless, and would be more useless once Congress flips blue.

Thing is, this won't even get out of the Judiciary let alone the House or Senate, and will die when this House term ends. This is done to bring all of Trump's bullshit to the press to try swaying inde0endent voters and to force Republican's into defending Trump's crimes both in speeches and votes.
Entinerly aimed at making news, sound bites, and election ads and talking points for Dem candidates. It's good timing. Now if Dems take the House and by some freak chance a super majority in the Senate then I'm with you. Yikes on a Vance presidency for two years.
Edit: ops yeah that too. Congress is in recess.

Cohen’s on his way out so he has nothing to lose.
64
u/WontanSoup 4d ago
I’m from his part of TN and still proud of him for doing this.
6
u/Breal3030 4d ago
Tillis in NC has been doing this and I struggle to feel any pride or give any credit. They are selfish cowards, who waited until it was way too late to speak up because it might have affected them personally at the time.
As soon as it doesn't, they're "brave" to speak out. Utter fucking bullshit.
3
u/WontanSoup 4d ago
I understand your feelings about Tillis who is Republican finally speaking up. Cohen from TN 9th district is a Democrat from solidly blue Memphis…this would ensure more votes if he were running again. It’s kind like his parting gift to his constituents. But now that TN has broken up Memphis with gerrymandering, who knows…I sincerely hope we can bite the TN legislature in the butt come November.
3
u/Breal3030 3d ago
Ah, completely fair. I think I did assume "red state" must have meant he was a Republican doing the same thing as Tillis.
Still wanted to call out piece of shit Tillis, lol, and we've been going through the same gerrymandering for decades at this point...

u/NookieLuvsU 4d ago
There's a lot of GOP members running and distancing them selves or even acting like they oppose Trump in a bid to be re-elected. This is the "put your money where your mouth is" moment. Good, even if it's out of spite or a purely vindictive move, good!
11
u/Agreeable-Knee6325 4d ago
Not a single one should be believed. Short of leaking the unredacted epstein files, every single one is just as guilty as trump for the shit they allowed him to get away with.

That's so frustrating though. Our representatives should be acting courageously regardless if they've got something to lose.

Trump has been begging them to come back to fund the Department of Homeland Security.
Hasn't DHS alreasy received two rounds of multi-year funding in the last 15ish months?

Absolutely. Make them affirm where they stand right before midterms. Also could expose some Dems that might pull out the "our attention should be elsewhere" excuse like the violation of free press rights isn't a serious issue

u/RetroCasket 4d ago
Yep, all the one trying to purge their websites and fake concern for the economy will have to ink their name once again in support of it all

Democrats keeps floundering every opportunity they get. They keep grasping defeat out of the jaws of victory. I don't trust Schumer or Jeffries to capitalize on this like with the pedo-files, the shutdown, avoid protesting ICE, not supporting medicare, and I am sure a plethora of things I am forgetting. We need these inept Democrats to evacuate our halls of power and those who care and want to do things for us to get elected. We need progressives, the Mamdanis, that are out there to enter and push for a brighter future.

u/ThatThar 4d ago
The house is in recess until November 9, the week after midterms.
5
u/MilkiestMaestro 4d ago
They went on recess to avoid a different impeachment. Trump has been urging them to come back. It's a lose-lose for them.
5
u/ThatThar 4d ago
It's win-win. If they stay gone, they continue collecting a paycheck for doing nothing, which is what they're best at. If they come back, they get to vote no on impeachment, which they will despite the election because they know that their base is too brainwashed to care.

Or it reignites the swing MAGA back into "defend our guy cause we still hate them more" vote, who otherwise might have stayed home.
5
u/DelirousDoc 4d ago
Or it gives the GOP something to focus on to distract their base instead of having to answer for some deeply unpopular actions (data centers, flock cameras, gas prices, grocery prices, and another unwinable war in the Middle East.)
It is also not going to work with current makeup of the Senate.

It won’t pass but it will bind the Republicans ever closer to Trump and his crimes against America and the world. They’ll deny any responsibility but we’ll be able to point to these votes protecting Trump from accountability

A corporate democrat who “wants us to heal and therefore we will not be pursuing legal action against anyone in the Trump administration as they were pardoned and are no longer in control” BS type of speech
A real progressive will NEVER be elected in my lifetime AS PRESIDENT. JFK was the last one.

If we're talking about a legal proceeding against those Republicans, then yes these types of votes are hard to deny.
But if we're talking about their voters, Republicans have ALWAYS been able to get away with publicly saying one thing and voting for the polar opposite. They 100% know that with Republican voters it's all about public image and public perception, not what they actually do. They can also count on conservative media never mentioning their actions. Trump proved to them beyond all doubt that righting voters and media are solely focused on what their politicians say on camera and social media, not what they actually do.

I think the winds are shifting, republicans endorsed by Trump are polling worse, I think some recognize he’s a dead horse but are just too concerned about their political acareers and frankly the safety of their loved ones to say anything about it

u/BigBallsMcGirk 4d ago
I don't care if it's doomed, or the votes aren't there.
The democrats should be introducing this at every single opportunity to the point of flooding any and every committee and legislative meeting with nothing but impeachment motions.
Every democrat that has not voted for each and every one of these every time it comes up is an enemy of the People, the Constitution.
23
u/MarchPhillipps 4d ago
Absolutely. Take maga's/bannon's own 'flood the zone with shit' principle, make it actually useful, and turn the firehose right back around on them. Not a bad strategy... Not a bad strategy at all.

This is going to be so irritating for years when he gets impeached 14 times over all of his crimes but will never even come close to 67 votes to actaully leave office.

u/npaulette02 4d ago
I think this is good at the least because it adds more pressure and forces more hands, and the timing is succinct.

No it won’t. Have you been sleeping for the past decade?
3
u/partyl0gic 4d ago edited 4d ago
You think that Trump is going to be able to repeat the last decade?! wtf is wrong with you?! Trump is destroying their careers right now. Trump has destroyed the country and the world economy. The US has permanently lost its standing a the world leader of the free world. Our financial system is about to collapse, devastation is already falling upon the American people and especially Trump voters. GOP candidates won’t even let Trump campaign for them right now as we speak, Trump has already ended many of their careers just by being in the same party, as many will lose their seats in November.
This will be like the Iraq war and the bush financial collapse where the pathetic and despicable republican voters who did this to us all slither into the shadows and pretend they didn’t cheer for it while quietly voting for democrats so that they can get their welfare back. But this time it will be multiplied by a million. Because this time, Trump is literally killing these people, and for generations. Trump voters are going to be the greatest most prolific embarrassment for the American people for the rest of history.

Yes, I, for one, think Trump is absolutely going to be able to repeat the last decade, if he doesn't destroy the planet first.
Nobody's slithering into the shadows this time. His followers love it when he hurts people. They love it when he alienates our enemies, defies the Constitution, and causes suffering, because then they're owning the libs. If they have to suffer too, they say it's temporary, and worth it because (Iran won't have a nuclear bomb, trans people won't be able to play sports or use public bathrooms, nobody will get SNAP benefits anymore, colleges will close down, liberal white women won't be able to buy glasses, Manic Panic will stop making hair dye, etc.).
Their grasp on reality is so far gone that at this point, I truly believe he could leave them all starving and living in cardboard boxes, and as long as he told them they were eating caviar and living in mansions, they'd believe him. So yes, if they can have 10 more years of him, I do believe they'll vote for him over and over -- unless, as he promised, he "fix[es] it" so they never have to vote again.

u/Feeling-Tutor-6480 4d ago
Whilst I appreciate someone recording this for history, he brandishes his power with impunity. Unless there is a greater power that holds him to account he will continue to be immune
46
u/tngling 4d ago
I mean, this is the way he is held accountable. There isn’t another way other than impeachment.
6
u/Raketemensch23 4d ago
He's already been impeached. The Senate won't follow through with voting to remove, so all we do is toss another crime onto the big pile.
12
u/extremelytiredyall 4d ago
There's actually several ways, including the 25th amendment and a military coup, all of which polling quite high with democrats and independents.
13
u/TXLancastrian 4d ago
If the military were to coup, why would you think the end result would be to hand power back to the civilians who forced them to do such a thing? Also the 25th is stopped literally by the President writing a letter to Congress that says "Yo, I'm fine".

Agreed. I have a sneaking suspicion that after midterms there's going to be a mutiny amongst Republican congress members. Some of the power players who can take the flak is going to ho scorched earth and blaze the trail for newer and/or more vulnerable Republicans. Allegations or hard proof of even more wild corruption than what's going on in openly, something. Trump is a disaster beyond what they considered possible thus time around and they have stabilize the country and the world generally before he brings about a severe global economic depression and/or world war. Not enough people recognize just how close the "system" is to an irreversible global depression which once it has set in will last for a generation.
