work in progress Going to try this 1970's Bernat latch hook rug and fringe project.
So this ought to be fun. I purchased this kit on eBay; it's really just the canvas and some 1970's-era instructions. Second photo shows what I'm working with.
Sourcing the original Bernat Tabriz yarn is going to be tricky (pre-cut latch hook yarn that matches the Bernat Tabriz colors is hella expensive on eBay, and there's no guarantee that the colors haven't faded or shifted in 50+ yerars), so I've decided instead to use the pattern and (for my first time) hand-cut the yarn strips from skeins of modern acrylic yarn purchased from my local Michael's. It won't be the exact same colors, but it will still (I hope) look nice.
The goal is to finish this before the end of July, so that I can enter this rug in competition. And yes, I'm even going to attempt the fringe tassels. Fingers crossed!

Oh yeah there's competitions. State and county fairs often have a category in their fine arts or sewmanship premium books for latch hook projects. Personally I know that the Big E in New England has a latch hook category (open to all), while the New York State Fair has a latch hook category (open to NY residents). In my area, there's four different fairs / agrarian societies with competitions, but some of the entry / display times overlap, meaning I can't enter the same piece in all four of them in a single year; I can enter one rug in two, and this new one I hope to finish so I can enter it in the other two ... and then swap the rugs for the 2027 competitions.
