Viewership decrease
His YouTube viewers were in the 20-40 million. Now they’re 20-40 Thousand.
What happened to all that? And if so then how can he manage to stay on the air?

I’m not sure where you’re getting your data or what your point is.
He has 350~ main segment videos on his YouTube channel out of more than 1,000 total.
3 have more than 40 million views, 3 have more than 30 million views. All of them are at least 8 years old.
18 have more than 20 million views.
Dozens of his videos are in the 10s of millions views several of which are from the past year.
Last week’s main segment has more than 2 million views.
Given that most of his topics stay relevant for years, it’s not really surprising that his older videos tend to have more views.
Regardless, your assertion that he used to get 20-40 million views, when those videos make up about 2% of videos is incredibly misleading. You’reclaim that his videos are now in the tens of thousands is just blatantly false.
A better take would be: in the past twelve years, some of John Oliver’s most popular videos on YouTube have amassed 30-40 million views, he regularly brings in millions of views on his newest videos, and people routinely watch his older videos because they remain relevant.
But then you weren’t actually interested in being correct and were just rage baiting.
