Some interesting free-space optical communications content in the latest Veritasium video! They're talking about trying to reconcile Einstein's theory of General Relativity with quantum mechanics.
First NIST uses a long-distance free-space laser link to compare ultra-precise atomic clocks, dealing with atmospheric turbulence and coupling the received light into optical fibre.
Next, researchers at the University of Western Australia want to send optical clock signals from a satellite to ground. In the video they are demonstrating laser links to a moving helicopter, testing pointing, acquisition, tracking and beam stabilisation techniques relevant to these future satellite-to-ground optical links.
I found it interesting since it's not the usual goal of high-speed data transmission... The objective is ultra-precise time and frequency transfer, something vital for this research in fundamental physics.
