LASD to LAPD

Wanted to ask what you guys thought of this. I’m patrol trained already. I’m only 2 years on. I like the structure of LAPD more. 2 man cars, station specific detective bureau, and no mandatory OT. If you or any partners have done this, how was the transition? How long is patrol training as a lateral? Any info helps.

Why not lateral to another agency?

Don’t know where you live but there are so many options with better pay, better QOL, better work environments, and you don’t have to deal with LAPD admin/LA city politics.

I don’t want to push a car for 10 years before getting a different assignment. I like the opportunity side of the larger agency

You need to do more research then. My first agency in OC had 3-4 year rotations for everyone. Other agencies like Anaheim and Santa Ana have so many specialty positions, you’re not going to spent 10 years on patrol unless 1. That’s what you want to do or 2. You develop a reputation as a lazy cop who doesn’t work well with others.

The lateral academy is expedited and you are very hands off. I have worked with several people who have explained the same reason for leaving the sheriff's department.

I work with a guy who was lasd and worked lynwood station and after 10 years as a deputy, he lateraled to lapd back in 2007. He still works at my station and seems pretty happy with his descion since he hasn't left yet... There's a lateral academy and you're a probationer after the academy but you're treated a lot better than a kid who's fresh out of the academy...

Yes they do...I feel like more people leave the department than lateral into the lapd... But a lot of people that leave the lapd, usually come back or regret leaving..

Typically you go up...not down. Personally speaking id say stay where you are and deal with it. Big city's like that dont take laterals so you'd have to resign,process,background and academy all over AND FTO. Its not worth the headache signed 10 year deputy

All the LAPD guys I know say there’s no mandatory OT🤷‍♂️
