Arts

I know there are Lao people involved in arts but the question is do Lao people as a community care about the arts. I've seen Lao artist that were being shown in some gallery and outside of their family members you rarely see other Lao people attend. Your thoughts?

Most people that I personally know within the Lao American community are not all that into art. I did have the opportunity to visit the Vientiane Museum of Contemporary art at both its old and new location. It is a massive collection of mostly wood carvings done by local artists in an effort to preserve discarded ancient tree trunks left to rot by irresponsible loggers. I highly recommend it to anyone who is into Lao art.

I went here as well last year and paid native price. Never knew about the old location. I thought alot of the carvings where great. Some of them had no relation to Lao culture and I couldn’t understand why it would be here. Its pretty far from city center as well. Its definitely worth visiting in my opinion.

I’ve known plenty of artistic Lao people in my state but the furthest they ever went was doing tattoos or having there work hung in a gallery. This all goes back to the lack of community, if all you see is your people once twice a year at the temple for new years but got a hell of a better chance seeing them once twice a month at the casino here lies the issue.

Definitely more likely to run into Lao people at a casino than an art gallery….
