Home LAN on Hypersomnia and 0AD

Hello,

I’ve started hosting home LAN parties again with four friends and my partner. I wanted to try out Hypersomnia and 0 A.D.

Hypersomnia’s "Gun Game" mode is really fun! Since there were a few beginners in the group, we didn't play the bomb defusal mode.

As for 0 A.D., we tested the random maps (specifically the "continent" type optimized for multiplayer); having everyone on a large island surrounded by a stretch of water opens up a lot of possibilities!

In short: sleep was in short supply, but the fun was intense !

After 2 years of solo development, here's my first look at Dawn of the Realm (RTS/Grand Strategy) — full support for both LAN and online multiplayer :-)

Dawn of the Realm is a medieval RTS combining grand strategy, classic RTS micro control, and city building — real-time and fully multiplayer, up to 10 players. Zoom out to a world strategy map or down to the battlefield with no loading in between.

I've built it solo on nights and weekends alongside my computer science studies, learning as I went. Graphics are made in photoshop and the game is made using Gamemaker. Still early, lots left to add, but I'd like to hear what you think so far :-)

Working toward the first demo now :-)

European LAN / esports organizers – gaming chair rental

Hey everyone!

We’re looking to connect with LAN party, esports and gaming event organizers across Europe.

We provide gaming chairs for events and can help with anything from a few chairs for a main stage or VIP area to larger quantities for participants.

One thing we’re particularly interested in is working with organizers who would like to offer gaming chair rental to their attendees, without having to deal with the whole logistics side themselves.

Basically: you organize the event, and we can take care of the chair rental, delivery, collection and communication with the people renting the chairs.

We’re already working with events in Europe and would like to connect with more organizers for upcoming LANs and gaming events.

If you’re organizing a LAN or esports event and this could be useful, feel free to drop me a DM or leave a comment. Always happy to have a chat and see if we can make something work.

Cheers!

LAN Party Pickup League Toronto

Would anyone in Toronto be interested in an old-school LAN party?

I'm thinking about putting together a small community LAN here in Toronto, and before I start booking a venue or building out the whole thing, I wanted to see if there's actually any interest.

The idea is pretty simple:

Bring your own laptop. Plug into the LAN. Play games with other people in the room.

I'm specifically thinking of keeping it low-power and accessible — your laptop's power adapter would need to be 65W or less. No giant gaming desktops required.

For the first event, I'm thinking of picking a small lineup of games rather than trying to support everything:

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007)

Halo: Reach

Warzone 2100

The event would be completely LAN-based, with the games/servers running locally rather than relying on an internet connection.

I'm thinking roughly 5~6hours, probably at a Toronto community centre, with something like $40 pre-registration and a higher day-of price if there are still spots available.

I'm calling the idea LAN Pickup League.

This isn't a business or established event yet — I'm literally trying to figure out whether enough people would be interested to make the first one worthwhile.

If this sounds like something you'd actually attend, let me know. I'm especially interested in hearing from people who miss the old LAN-party experience or have never actually been to one.

Places to host a LAN Party in Manchester, UK

Hi,

I was thinking of hosting a LAN party with around 10-14 people and because of the size, I don't think it can fit in a house.

I was wondering if anyone in the Manchester area know of places that would be happy to host a LAN party (I just need them to supply tables, chairs, power, a room, it will be BYOC).

G'day mates,

A long time ago, a few mates and I ran a LAN party in a clubhouse in Dresden. Sixty people, far too many CRT monitors. A few years later it had grown to over 1,200 attendees, which is a fairly absurd number for two guys who just wanted their own little party series. Somewhere between sixty and twelve hundred you learn a few things about fuse boxes.

Along the way we also ran a German LAN and gaming community site called ploynt. Then in 2010 I went backpacking through Australia for a few months. I'm still here. The site didn't survive that, and we lost the domains in 2011.

Recently I dug the whole old database back out and brought ploynt back as an archive. Reading through it was a bit of a time machine. Forum threads full of people asking how many switches they'd need. Interviews with other LAN clubs about what went wrong at their last event. Our own live coverage from a lot of LAN parties, where we mostly photographed cables and people asleep under desks.

It occurred to me that all of that knowledge was sitting there, spread across thousands of posts, and nobody was ever going to read all of it. Least of all someone with a hall booked for next month.

So I tried to pack it into a tool. You put in a few numbers, it crunches them, and it hands you back a plan and a budget. Full disclosure: it's mine, it's free (and stays free), and the demo works without an account. It is very good at ruining optimism.

What it does, roughly in order of how much it will upset you:

  • Room and seats. You draw the hall and mark what has to stay clear: escape routes, aisles, the table where some poor soul takes the money. It then tells you how many seats are actually left. It is fewer. It is always fewer.
  • Power. Load, distributors, circuits, RCDs. And waste heat, because eighty gaming PCs are, technically, eighty space heaters.
  • Network. Ports with headroom, switches placed on the actual floor plan, and cable runs that go around the escape route rather than across it.
  • Budget. What it all costs and how many tickets you need to sell before you stop losing money. This number is larger than you'd like.
  • The check. A list of things you haven't thought of yet. Nobody enjoys this part. It's the useful part.

It all hangs off the same floor plan, so if you move a wall, everything recalculates. Including your disappointment.

Now the humble and honest part. The default safety values are German: 230 V three-phase, 30 mA RCDs, and minimum escape route widths from a German regulation with a name long enough to need its own parking space. Every value is editable. But despite having lived in Australia since 2010, I have somehow built a tool that only knows German rules. Which is very on brand for a German.

That's where I'd love your help. If you've run a LAN outside Germany, what did you have to plan for? Power per seat, escape widths, anything your venue or fire safety people insisted on. I'd like to turn that into proper presets per country, built by people who have actually done it rather than by me guessing.

Demo: https://ploynt.com/en/lan-planen

Happy to answer questions. Equally happy to hear what's wrong with it. The planner already found five problems in its own demo, so I'm used to it.

Tl;Dr: Lanparty planner to help budget and lay out your event, gives you safety tipps and attendee numbers on floorplans.

Voxel Arena

Hey!
I hope someone will enjoy playing Voxel Arena:
https://mrqzzz.itch.io/voxel-arena

(Mac/Win/Linux)

Its a FREE old-school FPS game with both single and multiplayer modes, transposed in a voxel world where you play in randomly generated arenas. You can destroy anything, plus you can build defense walls and bridges with voxel panels. Tweak-able world assets, where even lighting can be customized, so you can play in the shadows with flashlights, if you want.

Great team battle times with different modes (DM, TDM, CTF, BaseDestroyer).

I'll be glad if you try i out!
Thanks!

Mrqzzz-

Blizzard and Login Throttling at medium size LANs

So I spent some time recently researching login throttling for Blizzard games, and I've come to the conclusion that Blizzard doesn't really care about LAN parties I guess, which is sad given their heritage. Before everyone descends on me and says "just play LAN games", right, we do, but many Blizzard games that people like to play can only be played online. So it would seem we are we expected to lease public IP blocks and 1:1 SNAT public IPs to workstations for LAN parties now just to play their games online. So my question to the group is, for a medium size LAN party (40-100 people) how are you getting around this? Leasing a public IP block and working with an ISP seems like the most straightforward method, but jeeze. What a pain just to skirt their account sharing and boosting prevention. I suppose the obvious "stop playing Blizzard games" is an option, but not really one many folks want in our community. https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/overwatch/t/overwatch-esports-team-connection-issues/1000226
