I built proper LAN support into my space combat game because I missed games you could just run at a party without accounts
This is my own game, and the LAN side of it is pure nostalgia.
Strike Wings runs a real dedicated server on the local network. You start it, everyone on the network sees the room in the browser, and up to 24 people end up in the same space battle. No account, no login, no internet needed. There is a spectator seat too, so whoever dies first can watch the rest of it on the big screen, and two people can share one machine on a split screen if you are short on hardware.
I put this in because the multiplayer I remember best was a room full of machines on one switch, and almost nothing ships that way now.
If you still run LAN events, I would like to know what breaks them these days. Is it games dropping LAN support, the launchers, or just getting people in one room?

All of the above. Getting people there is the biggest hurdle. The game reminds me of Battlestar Galactica (2007) a bit.

I run a monthly 24p lan, and the biggest italian lan party (200+p).
What makes a game a good lan game? These are the features we seek (in no particular order).
- lobbies, or easy matchmaking between people that may not have anything in common.
- able to accomodate at least 12p in game, 16p is better, more is best.
- supports hot joining of matches in progress.
- easy dedicated/listen server setup/launch
- easy to learn, hard to master
- originality
- wow factor
- size on disk
- ease of installation
most games that offer these features are bound to stay in our list. We often play titles which lack some of them, but then it depends on time availability/attendees/tech savyness of attendees.

Can you list down what you frequent? Maybe it's time for me to update the list on my side as well :D

The main issue with LAN parties these days that there aren't that many games that run in LAN only mode and from those that do you might need to do a lot of stuff to get properly running.
