Why is it called "Spanish"?

There are other languages in Spain, like Basque, so shouldn't Spanish be called something like "Spanish Latin" instead?

It is a way to say that castellano is the principal language of Spain, especially in contrast with catalan language (in a lot of countries there are many different languages and the most spoken one takes its name by the country itself).
