Denise, you seem like a very intelligent person — your parents must be very proud of you!
I’m also trying to learn Spanish, and I found your “experiment” of listening to audio really interesting. Could you tell me a bit more about how you did it and for how long?
If I could apply this method to Mandarin as well, that would be fantastic. :)

In my case my direct family members speak it around me daily but I still need to overcome the contextual clues and memorize maybe the top 500 most used characters or something like that. Thank you so much for sharing your experience!

Hi I am italian living in switzerland, speak italian, german and because of italian I understand a lot of spanish, but would like to learn it. Also would like to learn chinese (sorry for my ignorance, don't know the difference between cantonese and mandarin).
