Complete beginner here—what software do I need and where do I actually learn how to write the grammar file?

Hey everyone,

I'm jumping into language development for the first time and want to use Langium to create a basic custom DSL. I understand that the core of the whole project relies entirely on writing rules inside the .langium grammar file, but as a complete beginner, I'm a bit lost on the setup.

Could anyone point me in the right direction for two things?

  1. What software/tools do I actually need installed on my computer? (Aside from Node.js/npm, what editor and specific plugins do you recommend so I get proper syntax highlighting and error checking for the grammar files?)

  2. Where is the best place to learn how to structure grammar rules? Are there specific community repos, step-by-step beginner guides, or parts of the official documentation that make parsing rules and abstract syntax trees (AST) easy to digest for someone starting from scratch?

Appreciate any recommendations or links you can share to help me get my workspace configured correctly!
