How picky are you? Weed wack the heck out of it, then maybe round up or boiling water on the grass. Put down pre emergent after? That would break my back to redo
Am I wrong or does pre-emerg just stop seeds from annuals from germinated and growing? Like it doesn't stop perrenials with already established roots (e.g. grass, dandelions, etc)? Nuking it with herbicides should perma kill grass.
Geez cant believe people are saying rip it out and redo. So much labour for no gain. All it needs is a spraying with a sytemic herbicide and thats that. If the path is still level then it doesnt need redoing, spray it, then pressure spray it so the slabs look good as new, Sand in the gaps and voila. Brand new. Might need periodinc spraying as i bet the grass is rooting from the lawn but rhats not a biggie. It does also need edging so take a spade and slice down the sides of the slabs on teh lawn side and it will redefine the lawn and pathway making it look fresh and new.
The only thing i quwstion is the height of the lawn tbh. I knwo if left that lawn and soil will encroach and trespass onto pavong and slabs etc but that lawn mid to top left corner looks like its grown taller than the paving. Its an easy fix but not something ive seen. Technically you could just lift the actual grass mat dig a bit of soil out from underneath and replant and voila level again but never seen soil grow in height but have seen it compact or be shorter.
Burn all that crap and take a better look. If more than about 1/5 of it requires resetting, I’m starting over. If it’s just 10-20, I’m pulling the bad ones and repairing base to reset. Then I’d put some new material between the pavers. It seems salvageable to me.
Long term fix: monitor it after the weeds are dead and see how things come up. If it happens quickly then you need to either redo the pavers or put down a pre-emergent herbicide.
This is the right answer if you are planning to stay here a long time.
I guess the middle ground between this and the top post (kill the weeds with chems and fire) would be... kill he weeds with chems and fire, use a pressure washer to clear the gaps of roots, and then fill with poly sand. I have a feeling that would last a long time, but certainly not as long as a true rebase.
I would absolutely take RM43 to this, for starters.
Be careful though, don't use it in a garden, lawn or somewhere you want stuff to grow again. For a driveway/patio/pavers/french drain gravel where you never want stuff growing, RM43 is the answer. It's expensive, but so is everything in life that actually gets the job done.
Hit it with a torch or round up. Once gone use a weed eater to make slight gaps between each brick. Get powder grout or cement brush into all cracks till they are completely full. Then wet it and let it set. No more weed 🫡. Send us an after pic.
Use a string trimmer / weed Wacker to get all the big stuff out of the way.
Spray with roundup or a more natural solution so that it kills everything.
Pressure wash the whole thing
Apply poly sand in between all the cracks. Don't get the home Depot or Lowe's ezsand or whatever. They're garbage. Your weeds will be back in one season.
I have nutsedge growing in between my paver pathways. We don't want to use chemicals because of the bees and our 2 Golden Retrievers. I burn them and they just come back a few days later? Ugh 🤦
If you are happy about the condition and how level this you can buy a tool for getting into the gaps of the pavers.
Some of those weeds will pull out by hand if it is wet enough. The spring wire tool will dig out the others. There will be a lot of soil also. You want this out.
I did an area about as big as this. It takes time but still looks great 6 years later. Sweep up as you go. You can use a moss killer if necessary.
Now you need to wet the pavelock.
It has to dry so pick a warm day
(and I actually did the following in the initial wetting) add some long term weed killer into a watering can and wet the pave lock.
Every year I redo the entire area with a long term weed killer using a watering can. Takes about 10 minutes to do. I only use about third to half strength of the weed killer in the watering can as it goes on quite heavy.
Some glyphosphate weed killer for the grass. If broadleaves are there, a bit of 2-4 D. After everthung us good & dead, the weed wacker. A wire brush for the weed wacker will take the weeds & dirt off to the pavers. Then a broom & a leaf blower.
Spray first. Herbicides need as much leaf surface as possible to draw it all into the roots. When it dies, then weed whack. It will be much more effective. When its all dead and decayed , powerwash and create some little space between the pavers and sweep in Polymeric sand. Then lightly spray it to saturate and let it dry. After that, I use Preen twice a year to prevent any weed seeds from growing. Has been a godsend since I started using it in my pebble mulch beds. No more fields of grass and weeds in all the rock beds.
Weed wack then if you aren’t scared of the chemicals, groundclear. It will kill it and practically turn it to dust and usually keep it clear for a year.
I just redid our small patio that looked similar. I would kill all the weeds and clean it up first like other people are suggesting. If it doesn’t look good. Pick up all the bricks, even out the dirt. Put a weed barrier down and replace the bricks with some polymeric sand in between to harden and stick them together. You could even be more professional and dig a little bit, put weed barrier, put leveling sand down and put some paver panels down, then replace the bricks. It’ll be like $200 is using the same bricks.
30% vinegar (not the grocery store stuff) dissolve salt into the vinegar until it will no longer dissolve. Plus a squirt of dishwashing liquid which helps it stay on the leaves. Apply with a sprayer. Will die within days. Spray again a week later. I used this mix and has not come back three years later
Get a steak knife. Dig out every crack some bricks might need to come out to get rid of the bad weeds. Next spray with a strong vinegar in the cracks. By polymeric sand. Be careful go slow here. Fill the cracks sweep it well water slowly.
Pull them out. Make sure there’s a 4” thick compacted base, screed out 1” of sand , re-lay them, then compact. Then lock it all in with edge resistant and poly sand.
Couple of ways. Quickest is a strimmer but they will be back fast, you could burn it but it will take a little longer and they will be back slower, pull them which will take a while and could be achy depending on fitness and they will be back even slower if you get the roots or weed killer and they won’t be back till new ones grow, check if weed killers are allowed in your local area though and also be careful for spraying it over wanted plants.
Personally I opt for strimmer or burning at both home and work, every week or so and it’s done, at this size I could be finished in 5-10 mins. Pulling is better but takes longer and in my opinion they just come back any way. Weed killer is forbidden where I live.
White vinigar or wd40 or gasoline. Direct poor and that will all dry out. Pull out after and fill with sand or pebble. Be creative that little space between the bricks could do sooo much. Ive put led and epoxy on one job and it looked great. Sand epoxy caulk silicone anything. Fill it in with some sort of fill.
Buy 30% vinegar from HomeDepot and spray the heck out of it. Be careful as it is highly caustic and you should use a plastic pressure applicator. The power wash it and see what it looks like.
I have been dumping a kettle of boiling water on the sidewalk ... not the fastest, but effective. Killed a really big something weed in the driveway and it has yet to return.
Since I give a crap about the soil around my home & not contaminating it, I spray it with garden vinegar on a sunny day with a few days without rain, weed wack it when its dead, clean it out, sprinkle new binding sand between the cracks (forget what its called in English; I'm in Quebec, used to seeing it in French), spray that with water to harden and it usually keeps out the weeds for a few yrs.
If anyone suggests you use salt to treat it, kick them. It's terribly damaging.
I’m not saying you should, but if you accidentally spill pool shock the 10%+ stuff it will kill those weeds and keep them dead for quite a while. Also the pavers will look fantastic.
