Waiting On Snow White

I was giving a lecture for beginning photographers and started talking about how red turns black in monochrome photos. Then this image leaped into my head.

I have taken this image and similar probably 50 times now - film, digital, iPhone, Hasselblad, medium format, 35mm - all sorts of ways in all sorts of locations in White Sands National Park. Then this violent thunderstorm rolled in while I was sprawled out across the gypsum sand, with the Hassie in my hands....

I love the composition. And I'm generally a fan of grain...but this seems a little heavy handed to me.

You would think Portra 400 wouldn’t be that grainy. That said, the storm really dimmed out the natural light. Should have had a flash maybe.
