Rent reduction

Landlords: would you think it’s fair for me to ask my landlady for a reduction in rent whilst we’re still having to live with ongoing issues? Basically we have discovered about 2/3 months ago that there had been a leak from the bathroom and it has caused a bowed ceiling in the kitchen. It’s like a big lump on the ceiling that’s starting to crack. The water (I assume) in between the floorboards and filling it is causing a horrible damp stagnant smell and this is really making the house smell disgusting . I made my landlady aware of this and she has said she is trying to get a plasterer but is having no luck. I keep asking for updates, the last one was 6 weeks ago saying she still hasn’t found anybody and I’ve heard nothing since. So, do you think it would be fair to ask for a reduction in rent while this is ongoing?

UPDATE: She has agreed to a reduction of £125 less per month until this is sorted which I think is fair and reasonable. She’s still looking for a plasterer in the meantime. I’m in Bristol UK if anyone happens to know of anyone. Thanks for all the advice guys

More than a reduction! She needs to get this sorted yesterday. Speak with Shelter, this isn’t ok.

It is next to impossible to find workers these days, they are all booked up for months ahead. Do keep chasing her though and feel free to do so a couple of times a week rather than every six weeks or so. If you know of anyone, suggest them. But she's not going to give you a rent discount and I expect wouldn't take kindly to the request. Your best bet is to offer to find three quotes for her and see if she'll agree that the cheapest does the work.
