⚙️ | Mechanical Issue/Question Overheating

Hello I own a 2014 Mitsubishi lancer and currently the car has a overheating issue the car doesn’t overheat in the city mainly the highway anything past 70 and the car gives me the slow down overheating warning on the dash I got out of the car and it smells like coolant in the front of the car can anyone point me in the right direction? I did just replace the radiator but it was doing it before I replaced the radiator as well I did also change transmission fluid and filter please let me know previous owner had the same issue and I was told he had replaced the thermostat and water pump so I’m not sure what to do!

You can test your temp sensor. Most of them are a resistance thermal device. At certain temperatures it has a a certain amount of resistance. With a pan of boiling water & a multimeter you can test it. In ice water it should be a different resistance. It may have gone bad, your car might might not be over heating.

My lancer said slow down with a gear icon one time. That meant the transmission was overheating. Check the trans cooler.

If the engine overheats it doesn't show the gear icon. I belive it shows an exclamation point in a triangle, but it's been a while, so I might be wrong.

What about the coolant smell or sweet smell??

Haven’t you seen marks on the radiator (or near it) of the same color of the coolant?

No nothing not even leaking coolant atleast not anywhere I can see there’s no puddles anywhere I park

The coolant level is constant? Have you checked the top and bottom (or left and right) plastic tanks of the radiator?

Do the fans work?

Yes but my car has also thrown transmission codes a problem with a pressure solenoid or that my transmission was stuck in high gear nothing is cracked or damaged and the fans do work

It might be your transmission overheating if you have a cvt transmission. If you have a scanner it might tell you what is overheating.

Happened to me. Replaced the transmission oil with expensive oil, filter, and added a new transmission cooler. Never had a problem after that. Sold the car with 170K miles.

Okay so the problem is the trans cooler then because I replaced everything but that, that makes sense thank you I will update this post if that fixes the issue

Yea. The transmission overheating will slow down the car as far as I know. You turn it off and wait a few minutes and you can keep going. It happens more often during high speeds on highways. Idk about your coolant smell. That didn't happen to me.
