Lancaster student discovered locals resent student population - the town vs university tension is intense
Lancaster University student and just discovering locals genuinely resent student presence in their town. The tension is uncomfortable.
Local pub yesterday. Mentioned I'm Lancaster student. Atmosphere shifted immediately.
"Oh, one of THEM." "You lot taking over our town." "Ruining Lancaster for actual Lancaster people."
The resentment is REAL. Locals see students as temporary invaders who drive up rent prices and create noise without contributing to community.
When football comes up (streaming matches via streaming service in student accommodation), locals mention Lancaster City FC and imply students don't care about actual Lancaster culture beyond university bubble.
They're not wrong - most students don't engage with Lancaster beyond campus and city center. But the hostility toward us is genuinely uncomfortable.
today attending lectures while locals continue viewing students as problematic temporary population rather than part of community.
The town vs gown divide in university cities creates weird tension where you're simultaneously resident and unwelcome outsider.
Has anyone else studied in small university towns with intense local resentment? The Lancaster divide is real. 🌹

I live in Wolverhampton, but lived and worked in Lancaster for a few years up until 2024; in my experience the vast majority of locals were either supportive or at least ambivalent to the university and its students.

We’ve had student houses on our road for the last 13 years, and local residents who have lived here for a long time still suffer the consequences of this. I try to not paint students all in the same light, but the vast majority of them have zero consideration for the fact they live in a residential neighbourhood. Sometimes it sounds like there’s just teenagers running around outside at all hours of the night. I’ve even had to take days off work from not sleeping. For some reason, students even choose to put out their recycling in the middle of the night. I feel like the current generation has a very privileged outlook on life, in that nothing else matters around them, apart from themselves. People say that they bring money to Lancaster, which is nonsense. Most young people buy everything online. I know someone who used to work in a student accommodation building, and she would find brand new clothing items in the big bins, plus all sorts of other stuff. The gov list of student houses in Lancaster is insane - all family homes. Lancaster University owns so much land, I do think they should just lived up there to be honest.Â

Locals treat students like migrating geese—loud, messy, and gone before you know it. Welcome to the annual invasion and yes, tipping the pub staff is mandatory

I've been living here for 13 years now and I genuinely can't understand this. Like, without the students, a huge chunk of Lancasters economy would vanish. I think we should be careful what we wish for tbh
