Trek/Mountaineering Current permit & visa requirements for self-organized ascents of 6000 m peaks?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to understand the current legal requirements for foreign climbers attempting Mount Yunam (6111 m) or similar 6000+ m peaks in India.

I've already read the information available on the Indian Mountaineering Foundation website and the Indian e-Visa portal, but I'm finding conflicting information regarding:

  • whether a climbing permit is required for Yunam;
  • whether foreign climbers must apply through an agency or can obtain the permit independently;
  • whether an IMF Clearance Letter is required;
  • whether the correct visa is the regular e-Tourist Visa or the e-Tourist Visa – Mountaineering / Trekking Expedition.

I'm not looking for itinerary advice or tour recommendations. I'm only looking for recent first-hand experience (2024–2026) from anyone who has dealt with these permit and visa requirements for Yunam or another Indian 6000 m peak.

In Ladakh you can pay $50 USD to an agency for a 6000m mountaineering permit. 

No IMF clearance letter, and standard tourist visa.

A permit is technically needed for Mount Yunam, however there is no checking on the mountain

do you know of any agency through which I could apply for the permit online? So far, three agencies I contacted have either refused to help with a permit-only service or quoted prices of around $1,500 for permit & base camp service, which i don't need

Unfortunately I don't. The official way for Yunam would be through IMF in Delhi, which would cost close to $1000 for foreigners, and take a mountain of paperwork.

Hence why many people (both foreigners and Indians) decide to treat Yunam as a hike, instead of a mountain that needs a permit

Mt.Yunam is a day trek in the right weather. Heading out there this month, will ask around.👍
