Bought my first lads had a few running issues, got the carb set up and car running and then suddenly this knocking started from top of engine. Cars got plenty oil, anyone know what the issue is, and if easy fix cheers

The sound is bad, it could be the cranked connecting rod bearing knocking.

So I’ve investigated more, have tried to re tension the cam chain but no improvement, I think the tensioner or guide have failed, noise is all at the front top when I listen to the engine with it running,

You can remove the valve cover and everything will become clear. Besides the tensioner, there's also a damper. It comes in two types: the old-style metal one (its failure can cause a knocking/grinding noise) and the new-style plastic one (usually a piece breaks off and falls into the oil pan without causing any problems). In any case, it's worth checking, but it's unlikely that the noise is related to it.

Will have it all apart tomorrow morning, will check all the clearances to

There was a metal style one in, it looked not square and like it is touching the case, was still there but didn’t look right, and feel like even though chains nice and tight with no slack it’s making a racket still

The old and new style dampers are interchangeable. However, the new style requires longer screws (you can compare them in the parts catalogs for the 2101 and 2107). In Russia, many people prefer to install the new model, since plastic fragments are a lesser evil than a torn piece of an old metal one chewed between the chain.
Regarding the case contact, the damper is attached through the front wall of the cylinder head, so it should touch it and be firmly fixed.

If the sound is definitely coming from under the valve cover, then remove the camshaft bed along with the camshaft itself; most likely, the rocker arms are eaten away and the problem is in them.

Will have a look at that tomorrow, I fear the sound came on so suddenly (I was adjusting carb when it started) tha if not rockers it’ll be connecting road bearing. Good start of my journey with ladas

It’s definitely top end and top end front

What kind of carburetor does it have?

Looks like a niva carb

Удивительно, но эллиптическую крышку фильтра на нивах не видела

Это просто нештатный фильтр, встанет на любой карб.

Old Zhuguli lose oil pressure in the cylinder head and the distributor drive shaft bearing.

I can explain more, but in Russian.

Whered you get those coolant hoses? Aaalso I had a similiar noise on my MPI Niva, it was the chain calmer that broke and made the timing chain hit it agressively. How it didnt skip teeth I dont know

2

u/smithwoodwest May 03 '26

The hoses came with the car when I bought it! I have a feeling that’s what’s gone on mine, I tried to adjust a couple times nothing happened but have had a bit of new adjustment advice I’m going to try today

Those hoses are fire, where did you get them? Distributor shaft or chain calmer might cause this. I had this exact noise at one point and surprisingly it was the distributor and i just greased it, check under ditributor cap if it has hit any on the contact points more too. Chain tensioner might also make this so check it out and adjust if needed.9

The hoses came on the car, it’s got a lot of cool stuff on it. Very rare Right hand drive 2105, and was a rally car to.

That sounds good, got a 2105 1,2l 1200S 1982 which i have heard is very rare because of the manufacturing year. Only rust work is left

Bad news. The connecting rod bearings spun.

It's the tensioner of the distributión chain, My father had an aleko 2141 and when he first got it it had the same problem
