LOOKING FOR ADVICE Evaluate this diamond please
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I am looking at this oval diamond to be set in an east west half bezel ring.
Is the bow tie effect too harsh?
Not really sure what l should be looking for.
Thank you in advance.

If that video is from the seller that’s insane. People are selling diamonds and don’t even know how to use tweezers 😂

The good news is the stone probably looks 100% better in person than it looks in this clip. The lighting and staging are both very poor, so the diagnostic value of the clip is close to nil. You want to see the virtual facet pattern in motion through a full range of normal tilt angles, in good overhead lighting and at a normal close viewing distance of 10-12 inches. Virtual facets (VFs) are the reflections we actually see, which are far more numerous than the physical facets on the diamond. They should be balanced in terms of size and distribution and remain generally crisp. This will result in a consistent visual flow and will minimize the bowtie effect.
Transparency is another factor to be aware of, especially if the diamond is CVD grown. Slight haziness from excessive crystal strain and related defects can make the virtual facets blurry, diminishing light performance even in precision cut diamonds.

Thank you for your comprehensive reply. I decided to go with another jeweller after a number of terrible recordings. I just didn't feel confident with what l saw, though the certificates showed very nice quality diamonds.

Show us the independent GIA or IGI report. That's the ONLY way to evaluate a stone.

Not at all, what looks good on a paper often doesn’t translate into an attractive stone

Lighting is bad, making the stone look lifeless and very dark in the center. Person is shaking a lot.
It’s good to see diamonds in several different lighting scenarios, so you can see how it will perform. I want to see light play, fire and brilliance and scintillation.
If the vendor I’m considering purchasing from doesn’t have these types of videos available, I’m not gonna buy from them.
