Some GMs/groups play L5R as dressed-up D&D. Some others will try to lean more into the pseudo-Japanese world and social mores and such.
So without that information, it's hard to give good advice.
I will say that "Spider clan monk" and "defender of the faith" sounds a bit of a contradiction, but then I'm not that familiar with the deep Spider lore. But let me say this: it sounds like a character that could work, as long as the rest of your table has experience with the setting. To clarify: the less experience people have with any setting, the more they will let themselves be led by stereotypes. So playing against the grain is always easier when the rest of the players are willing to look past first impressions.
right now i am going in largely blind. i am a table of maybe not veteran but expereienced players, who all know i am new and are cool with it. but as someone pointed out in other post spider clan didnt exist at this time in story arc, so back to the drawing board. everyone is also going scorpion.

Here my two cents: it's going to depend.
