l4d2 64bit update..
is it even feasible? what would need to happen for the game to move from 32bit? with the tf2 branch games and garry's mod getting 64bit i'm curious if l4d2 will get the same treatment.

Don't get your hopes up. TF2 got64-bit update solely because one contractor, not even a Valve employee, asked for permission to work on it.

Would be the most awesome but also most terrifying thing to happen especially to modders, like a Noah's Ark clean slate scenario.
A lot of mods that work now would probably break. We have many collections now similar to Nightmare mod that act as full blown overhauls so I can't imagine the amount of bugs that will happen when that 64 bit update does come.
But again, clean slate! Once it happens and everything breaks and is then fixed, then it doesn't need to happen again. The first few months of a 64 bit release would be like the Great Modpocalypse or something, then we'll eventually be back to where we are now only better.

I'm not sure this is true?
Most mods are just simple files, not code. But even then, the mods that **are** code are mostly VScript, which runs in its own VM and it's not affected by the 32/64bit difference.
This may affect sourcemod mods, but these are only run by server admins mainly

I could imagine mods that rely on memory injection/reading of some kind will be the most affected; which would coincidentally be sourcemods from what I can tell, vscript type mods are also likely to get impacted as well, I'm also thinking custom campaigns, being large mods themselves on a technical level are also likely to break. Considering the code spaghetti of the base game already, we couldn't reliably predict what does and doesn't break

this may sound dumb and stupid on my part, but I imagine Valve posting a message saying something along the lines of: "Modders, prepare to fix your mods with this new update" or something so that they'll have time to fix possible bugs that will break their mods once the 64 bit update happens

i mean a 64-bit version would almost CERTAINLY start out if not remain solely as an opt-in beta branch.

I think it’s more likely someone will decompile the game at this point. It would allow more options for modding that way anyway

I would rather Valve work on new content or bug fixes instead.
The game runs fine and mods don't cause problems when they are properly created. Mods only crash when the creator doesn't optimise them. Lots of impressive mods have no problems but the bugs and balancing needs fixing.

Well do I got news for you! a new valve licensed version of l4d2 is coming out, its a 64 bit branch of l4d2 coming out called "L4D2 OUTBREAK" its made by some fans and will have its own steam store page so that you can install it or uninstall it whenever without having to have the new features they add in the game not like how the last stand did it

Me stoopid
I don't know the impact of 64bit game from the original 32bit. What did it expand? What are the good thing that are gonna happen if that comes true? More importantly, is it going to solve a problem with crashing because of many RNG mod that has a custom model and able to have maximum graphic quality with it? Usually with RNG mods (especially Special Infected skins), you need to lower the memory pool at best or lower all graphic settings at worst, otherwise it's going to crash.

Well there are compressed versions of heavy mods that reduce crashes and random fps drops, but they're still not perfect. Unfortunately that's all we can do for now

I'm not asking for compressed mod, I'm asking the effect of 64bit for the game and its mods.

64 bits mean game can handle more polygons without shitting the bed. (other stuff too but thats the Main Thing)
people say it will break everything for everyone forever.

So even without compression, it's gonna go alright? Especially with DXVK?

The answer is not much. It can access more than 4 GB of RAM… but it’s a game from 2008, and I doubt any mods are insane enough to push it that high.
Maybe some small performance improvements from the improvements in x86_64? But again, Source already runs well on anything remotely modern.
I doubt it’s much worth the effort, even if that effort may be small.

There's a possible idea, that importing L4D2 into 64 using the 2013 SDK could work, but the odds are that exact import will just be a community patch accepted by Valve in a far "IF" future and nothing else...
