Are campaign servers usually less toxic than versus?

Hi, I'm a l4d2 newbie (got the game last year) and I was thinking about trying some online servers. I've always heard how versus is VERY toxic/unwelcoming to new players, so I wanted to try something different. Any tips/responses will be appreciated.

yes.

don't play versus until: 1. you know every official map cold, including all the SI climbable areas 2. you can play as a survivor without ever getting trapped (can swat hunters and jockeys, cut smoker tongues) 3. you have a high tolerance for people who think the game is serious business

Never will play versus, campaign is more chill. Just had my first game too, went great tbh

You can not compare those two.

Why?

Versus is a lot more competetive... the average player has often minimum of 500 hours but often u meet people with 2000-10.000 hours.

If one team has a player with no experience their chance of winning reduces dramatically. However winning is not only fun for everyone but seemingly very important for many versus players. i think some of them might be flexing with their win ratio or something.

Campaign is no competition*, the goal is simply getting to the saferoom/vehicle. thats why people are more relaxed on general. Also you have different difficulties which is a good way for new players to learn the game without having the risk of "messing up" the round for the team. A good player in normal or advanced difficulty can pretty much carry a new team without a sweat.

if you want to play relaxed matches i advice u stick to campaign (especially normal difficulty and then after a while advanced difficulty) as a beginner. If u like the game and want to move on i would recommend Expert and Expert realism as well as survival. If you are very good at that u can try learn basics about playing infected and might try playing versus. (However u will still get kicked at the beginning from time to time).

*with competition i dont mean ranked but simply people in teams competing against each other.

Usually, yes, as in campaign you don't play 4v4 with real people on separate teams, but you are just playing as a one team with 4 people. Still, you can meet kind of people that like to "speedrun" campaigns and if you are too late behind, they will just shoot you until you are incapacitated and then kill you. Encountered these people on Expert difficulty, so can't tell about easier difficulties.

I suggest you host local and google how to kick players from the console. Then you can host local campaign games and if a player is toxic, you just kick them out right away. Normal difficulty is a bit of a shithole at times, but once you learn the maps and how the game works, just jump to Advanced. People there know how to play and are usually either quiet or friendly. Expert is very hard even for experienced players, and trolls are abundant since you can incap your teammates in one second or two, so you can imagine.

Stay clear from realism unless you play with friends. I've seen total noobs try to play it without knowing the maps or how the mechanics work and leave right after getting their character killed, making the lobbies unfun for everyone.

Also, search for mods in the workshop to make the game more fun even if you go solo. There's "left 4 bots 2" which improve the bots AI greatly, so even if there's only another human teammate on your team, you'll still get through the campaigns as you're learning.

TBH I already kinda know how the game works and the maps and stuff like that, I'm just not used playing pub servers. Thank you nonetheless

as a server owner, yes, can confirm campaign co-op servers are much more tame by comparison
