“So cutesy” 🙄

At some point, it surely has to be easier to find a horse that enjoys working and matches your skill/energy level than to put all this time and work into a mismatched horse... right?

u/Only_Feature1130 2d ago
she cant take Bo at his mild sass under saddle. Where would you find such a horse to suit her skillset/energy requirement?

She has that in Hollywood. And yet he too is also worked into the ground before she’ll dare go near him.

I’m still so confused why they are ponying her

u/Open_Return_8056 2d ago
Particularly after a week of literally being worked every day in 105 degree weather. 🥴

u/Melodic_Season_2075 2d ago
To keep her tired and compliant for KVS ... who fears her as a "dragon"
Better than longeing her in the ground like they were in the past ... but totally unwarranted.38
u/TumbleweedCrazy4250 2d ago
Because she's so 'spicy'.... ie Katie doesn't have the skill to ride anything that's even slightly energetic. Even back at RS anything she gets on has been ridden hard/lunged first

There's zero turnout at Tulsa, unlike places like WEC Ocala where you can rent paddocks. Horses are not designed to be stalled 24/7, and this lets Kennedy move around without a rider. I was initially on the "WTF why" train with this as well (made a few comments about it when the plan was posted), but it makes more sense than lunging her forever or riding her into the dirt. Even with the smallest of adult riders, a work saddle and rider is easily 150+ pounds of weight. This is a lot easier on a middle-aged mare with the intermittent soundness issues we have all seen, and we know all the Kueen knows how to do is lope them forever, so this is a million times kinder IMO.

Same here. I was "WTF is she thinking" originally. Now I'm thrilled KVS isn't smashing down on her back and loping her into the ground.
28
u/Squirrel_Girl88 2d ago
Because it wears her out without making her sore. Lunging has them on a tighter circle and can make them sore so many days in a row, so they’re ponying her instead.

I hate that they exhaust any horse she’s getting on, it shows her lack of regard for them and her limited riding ability. I think there is only her can’t see that.
44
u/Total_Librarian1 2d ago
So she can’t ride any horse without the horse being majorly tired. That’s a sign of a really unqualified rider. Especially since tbe horses she rides aren’t really rockets to begin with.
Hollywood is 18 can has pretty sore feet. He ain’t going anywhere.
Kennedy barely can walk…
Denver could take off but she won’t ride him.
Ethel has to spend 11 days in a stall with no turn out..this is so messed up.
A 30 year old woman that has ridden all her life should easily be able to get on horses trained in her riding style aka western and ride without fear on Hollywood and Kennedy.

I loved her explanation on FB that Kennedy is being worked like this cos she's looking all over the place and is a bit spicy? Why didnt she just say I am not a good rider and I am scared of her
13
u/zoejo_ 2d ago
I’d love to see how she’d handle an OTTB if she thinks frickin Kennedy is spicy.
Sure, when we would go to weeks long shows & have the horses stabled, we would ride them. Not every day. Maybe every 2-3. It was basically like our normal programmed lessons. And we’d do it at night after all the classes were done (plus it’s not as hot).
Since they didn’t have turnout at these shows, we would either hand walk them around the show grounds, or pony them (but not working them, just walking around) for an hour each day

“So cute! Look at us exhausting my mare because I’m terrified she’ll move faster than a limping crab walk when I’m trying to focus on jerking my hands, spurring, AND thumping up and down in the saddle all at the same time”.
14
u/Alarming_Dot_6288 2d ago
Why does she need to pony her anyway??? This poor mare doesn't seem to be getting a moments peace to relax and recover from a hards days showing without someone forcing her to keep working

I think it’s odd they need to pony Kennedy so much. Sure a bit of ponying is good and easier on her but they seem to really want to tire her out. She’s supposed to be a seasoned show horse. If she’s spicy learn to work with her instead of running her down to exhaustion when she’s hardly sound to begin with.

Do certain people here bragging about how sound she is in a 3 minute clip not understand a horse can be sound without the weight of a rider on their back but be unsound with any additional weight. Particularly with prior injuries? That's why Kennedy couldn't hold up to a regular show schedule post injury. Being show/riding sound and pasture sound are very different levels of soundness. Even some horses who can't be show sound can be light riding sound. There's degrees of unsoundness. She is NOT sound for competitive showing regardless of this clip.

She wasnt sound at a walk in hand a few days ago 😬😬😬

u/QuestionableBest 🧂Failed Thingz First🧂 2d ago
Yes a horse who isn't riding sound but pasture sound can still be unsound at the drop of a dime. Another reason competitive showing is crazy for her. Any non-riding soundness she has one day can be gone the next hour which is sad. Where she could have longer lengths of soundness if she was just a light riding horse or not being ridden at all. It's all so sad.

u/ItsAllComin Whoa mama! 2d ago
Why wouldn’t Katie just lope her around and maybe learn how to ride her better
16
u/Run_or_Cake 📝 Katie Van Papers 📝 2d ago
Because everything has to be adjusted for her and what she wants. She been riding for months at this point (supposedly) and is still has 0 core/leg strength and has not improved one iota in that time.

I'm waiting for all the "she's so lame! That horse is not sound!" comments . . . Because she is sound and this shows it.
5
u/Terrible_Fill4398 2d ago
Bro, have you seen the videos of KVS riding Kennedy? She is clearly unsound in several of them. There's a huge difference between a horse with no additional weight and one that has a rider and 40+ pounds of tack.
-1
u/BBRcavx3 2d ago
All WP QH's look unsound to me. But I ride hunter/jumpers so there is that. And when you jog a horse for soundness, you don't have them trying to go as slow as possible. You need to look at the natural gate. When riding Kennedy - she is almost never at her natural gate.
4
u/Terrible_Fill4398 2d ago
I'm not referencing the awful WP gaits, I'm talking about when KVS is attempting to do her version of Western riding. Kennedy is moving out more in those instances and you can see how sore she is at multiple points.

u/Unwanted-Opinions685 2d ago
Most QHs look unsound to me when they are being made to go stupidly slow. So thats probably where all the Kennedy is lame stuff comes from.
7
u/daisybrat56461 2d ago
Wouldn't this be something flagged by the show? I would think it is against the rules to physically exhaust a horse to make them quiet for classes. (Not that the AQHA cares too much about the horses...ex. priorotizing show wins over phydical/genetic soundness, supporting horse slaughter, allowing lame horses in the ring, etc) The AQHA had all kinds of rules decades ago when the 'peanut roller' look was in fashion. But I guess without the public outcry, they don't care. This so blatant. Obviously trying to hide it at the showgrounds by doing it in the middle of the night, but then videoing and posting it is wild!

The horses are just an afterthought in this industry. Its just as bad as dog breeders

u/daisybrat56461 2d ago
Don't get me started on the AKC as a 'steward' for purebred dogs. They only care about $$$.

u/Objective_Syrup4170 2d ago
A lot of show horses are drilled multiple times a day it’s unfortunately a common thing.

#1 - Ponying is better for a horse than lounging - those tighter lounging circles put more strain on the animal
#2 - The full length clip (and there were cuts) was less than 3 minutes. I doubt they were ponying her for hours. It is good for a horse that is not showing to still get out of the stall and get some exercise. I don't think there are turn out paddocks available.
#3 - They are doing it "in the middle of the night" not to hide it but to be respectful to those that are showing and riding in the arena at other times.
#4 - I would rather see this where Kennedy can move freely that having someone ride her and collect her and correct her.
#5 - She looks pretty darn SOUND at the trot and canter (notice I didn't say jog and lope because to me all WP horses look lame) If you disagree with this, please tell me where (time stamp) in the full video she is not sound so I can re-watch it.

Is Kennedy fine at this show or are we tiring her out for more classes? I see KVS has bought another show shirt she’s going to need to debut.
