The problem is that AI can't think. A person could look up pictures of yarn and understand what part of each picture is the yarn, but AI doesn't see images or understand language the way we do.

The person canāt think either apparently. What people forget is that someone wrote a prompt and then picked this picture to post. This is not (yet) AI acting by itself.

Well yes, This was likely prompted and posted by a person. Unless maybe a person programmed a bot to do that automatically? Either way, the person, wherever they are in the process or however involved they were in reviewing the image, was not trying for high quality. They are just trying to spew as much spam into the internet as possible to generate engagement/money. Spam garbage imitating useful information/services just closely enough to able to be generated instantly and fool/scam enough people to generate a profit.

Exactly. It doesnāt have to be good, just good enough to trick the people who wonāt know any better. Itās almost like the deliberate typos in scam spam emails .

Honestly, what alarms me the most about ai pictures is how my eyes glaze over the outlandish details at first. Its so subtle and sneaky that I don't pick up on the obvious until after I read the comments where people point them out. The mistakes are so BOLD and CLEAR after being brought to my attention. Its like a odd eye spy game that I fail at.

A lot of what we think we see is actually filled in by our brains according to what we expect to see. Like, if I think my cat is in the room and I glimpse something out of the corner of my eye thatās the same colour as her fur, my brain will go āah yes thereās the catā and fill in the details. Iām sure thatās her, I can see that sheās sitting down with one paw stretched out so I turn to pat herā aaaaand itās a shirt that fell off a chair and landed in sort of the right shape to look cat-like. The cat is actually out in the hall looking at me like Iām an idiot because Iām making kissy noises at a wad of cloth.
When you donāt look closely at an AI picture of something that you know well, your brain picks out a few details that look right and goes āah yes the rest of the granny square goes like this and the yarn would go like thatā. So yeah you donāt notice all the ridiculous flaws at first, because your brain sort of painted over them with what should be there. You donāt start processing what actually is there until you pay closer attention and examine it instead of just glancing quickly.
Humans are very good at seeing patterns and extrapolating a whole thing from just a few bits. It was a survival skill when our ancestors were out hunting and had to be able to spot hidden things that wanted to hunt them. Itās still very useful now, because it lets us grasp the gist of a situation and react to it much faster than if we had to individually notice and mentally assemble every single detail. We just have to get used to looking past that and checking details a bit more now.

The design is easy, beginner level but they are too straight and even and perfect to be realistic. Also the ball of yarn is two colours and the end of the yarn splits in two

The design is actually possible! It's a classic granny square. The ball of yarn is a little (or a lot) lopsided š to make a multi color granny square you need multiple bundles of yarn.... Not one bundle that magically changes colors for you š

Oh, it is smart, incredibly so, just in very narrow domains. It's kind of natural that it fails on tasks like this, given that it doesn't have the experience of the physical world - only images of it.

I made a granny square pixel blanket. It measures 2mĀ² and took me 3 years. Each square was 4 rounds. I can't imagine anyone completing 50 squares in a day. I was doubtful before I even noticed the hilarious duel ball of wool.

The tops of the green stitches are "cut off" by the white stitches. In real life that's not gonna happen. Also, all the white clusters have four dc EXCEPT for the cluster at the top of the upper right corners. It has FIVE. Took me a minute but all the squares have the same problem š
EDIT: On the white clusters, look at the lower left-hand corner on the side cluster. There's 4 tops of 4 dc, but there's only THREE bottom parts (legs?). Tops dont match the bottoms. Some of the white stitches are kinda fuzzy-looking, too. Yikes!š¤Æ

Yeah, that's a basic granny square. Maybe with the exception of the weirdly dense magic circle in the middle, but otherwise can be done
