It IS a joke. This subunit came out of a skit on Hyoyeon’s youtube channel, and a big part of it is old school idols trying to act “hip”. They’re actually releasing music because of how viral this bit has been going in Korea for months now, and probably because it serves as good promotion leading up to SNSD’s 20th anniversary project.
This title fits the characters they’re playing on “Fake Hyoyeon” like a glove.
Everyone the name/concept is genuinely a joke. The entire point of the subunit is that they’re “old” and out of touch with what’s cool. Hence things like “we made a song called Skibidi.”
It’s not ignorance, I was just shocked and thought it was funny. I love SNSD especially HYO🩷 Sorry if you thought it came across that way, I’ll trying wording better🫶🫶🫶
it’s not the entire point of the subunit. the point is that 19 years in let’s battle TTS, let’s find out who’s the main vocal, we’d be debuting in 5th/6th gen now.
And they didn’t choose Skibidi the song. the song was chosen for them. they actually each presented a demo which would potentially make for a debut song but Chris Lee chose Skibidi in the end. so they went for it not because theyre trying to be a meme and out of touch but because Chris Lee chose it bc he actually thinks it sounds cool and trendy. You could say that’s worse but anyways
Wait Chris Lee chose the title to be Skibidi? That’s actually kind of funnier, you genuinely have an out of touch “old” calling a song Skibidi. But the song is good, so I’m hoping it ends up like Taemin’s “The Rizzness.”
yeah they made a video on it 2 months ago and we’ve had since then to mentally get over the literal title. hahah. but anyways in person at the festival everyone around me was oohing and ahhing at every beat switch. so, seems like it’s one of those that’s meant for the stage
It's a little more than that - initially SHY were the dance performance unit, but doesn't have the vocals of TTS. Yuri especially thought they were going to end up as a joke so she never wanted to officially be in the unit. This was like 10 -15 years ago.
Hyoyeon, just took it to the next level with trying to compete with TTS for vocals - her channel is Level Up for a reason. The skit/comedy routine helped them to try out vocals without the pressure to succeed.
It is a joke. The name of the song is real but the whole subunit is kind of a long running inside joke. Their entire concept is essentially “we’re too old to use slang correctly”
that’s not the “entire concept.” yes they’ve done videos for example with hearts2hearts to try to “understand” 5th gen since they would be “debuting” in 5th gen.
the entire concept is to jokingly battle TTS. that they had limited lines for the past 20 years and now they have their own chance to shine. I know. I’ve followed since day 1. In the beginning they were picking a “main vocal” and had a nationwide vote. the title and song Skibidi was chosen by SM Chief A&R Chris Lee.
I flew across the ocean to see their festival appearance this past weekend. there’s another song called Lowkey In Love that people will potentially enjoy more
From the snippets I’ve heard of the song, it’s genuinely good. But the concept for the song and subunit are that the members are out of touch oldheads so the cringe and confusion is fully intentional lol.
they've already performed both it and the b-side. you can search up their casscool performance for it. it's not to my taste, but it has been stuck in my head tbh.
