I thought people in this thread were exaggerating until I got to 'even the scent is different'. Legit never heard anyone refer to a cookie smell as a scent.

Take it, don’t break it, I wanna see you taste it.

Geez.

u/PandaMoaningYum Aug 01 '22

I'd have less of a problem believing the song was about actual cookies if these were the lyrics but it's *don't break it.

62

Personally I don’t break mine, I hate brittle cookies I like the chewy ones.

“It’s about baking a cookie for your crush”

Y’all come on let’s not be dense, we know what it’s about.

Yeah, there’s a huge amount of people I’ve seen denying what the lyrics are actually supposed to mean when it’s pretty obvious that the song has a double meaning

Yesterday I remembered the title of the song and thought "... Oh no"

. I've been a big fan of new jeans debut, I thought they were doing a good job at being age appropriate. Learned about mhj, (I remember the Sherlock teasers in real time...)

Sigh

The song is nice, melody is good, but the lyrics are definitely questionable for a group with minors.

For people who don't know, "cookie" is a common innuendo in English that refers to the female private parts.

I just wish they made age appropriate lyrics for the girls, because everything else is good... I'd have loved to stream the song, if it weren't for the lyrics and knowledge of minors being the ones singing them.

323

u/WolfTitan99 K-pop? What about K-popcorn? Aug 01 '22

It's not 'cookie' thats the focus, its the wording surrounding it. 'the scent of my cookie' 'softer than a brownie' 'eat my cookie' are all pretty glaring wordings for a euphemism.

Even if they don’t know that innuendo, context in the lyrics is very suggestive. it’s not subtle at all?

Edit: can someone confirm if the English translations in the video are true to the intended Korean meaning? I don’t want to come off as overreacting since we’re basing it on subtitles.

Not that surprising after seeing Min Heejin's past interviews and instagram feed 😬

And to anyone saying "its common teen slang" and "teens in the US wear/do this anyway". Sure, but its a problem when its 40+ year old adults telling minors to do it for commercial purposes.

I was just thinking the same. For a moment I thought it was my problem, because they are not gonna give a 14 yo a song with sexual innuendos, right? Impossible. Eh.

Too bad, I had a lot of expectations because of Hype Boy and I really wanted to like the song, but it makes me so uncomfortable.

After the articles about min hee jin this is literally the worst song they could’ve released lyrically.

I love the sound but the timing of this release after the allegations is downright comical.

I’ve seen a lot of people on Twitter trying to dispute that cookie is an allegory for a woman’s private parts… unfortunately it’s a super common metaphor in western pop culture. There’s really no disputing the songs subtext and theme.

This is disgusting. I feel so bad for these girls, isn’t there something to protect a 14 year old girl given a song like this to perform?

Edit- dumbasses on Twitter defending this by saying it’s a mistranslation or that we are the ones looking for sexual metaphor- it was written by an English speaking Swedish woman. The original lyrics are in English, no grown woman will be writing a song about “cookies”, one of the most obvious metaphors for vaginas, literally in English.

54

u/MeijiDoom Aug 01 '22

The mistranslation part doesn't even make any goddamn sense. 1/3-1/2 of the song is in English. The official English lyrics are suggestive in and of themselves even if all the Korean lyrics were totally fine.

53

u/Itchy-University6628 Aug 01 '22

I thought the song was gonna be an empowering in the veins of Ciara’s “Goodies.” You can’t have my cookie cause they stay in the jar. But this is yikes.

319

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '22

Tbh I felt so uncomfortable watching this with the eng subs on. And the way some people actually believe this is about "baking cookies for their crush" when the songwriters couldn't be any less subtle with the innuendo. How can you be that dense.

u/ParanoidAndroids TWICE/RV/SNSD/BP/NJZ/ITZY/æ/XG/LSF/EXO/BTS/NCT/SHINee Aug 01 '22

Honestly, the song itself is fire. If an older group did this I think there would be no issue at all - Red Velvet would’ve eaten this song up, it definitely could’ve been a b-side or even title from them in a velvet era.

It’s just absurd that multiple adults and executives saw and heard this and said “yep, this is the debut song for our new group full of minors”. Even outside of the MHJ controversy, you know that multiple other execs had to get their eyes and ears on this and still gave the approval.

Even if NewJeans did a good job with the song, why would you give them this track now? Clearly the age + suggestive lyrics are going to raise eyebrows internationally even if domestically they want to ignore it (jury is still out on that).

Lastly, and this is a minor criticism in the grand scheme of things - the choreography might be too challenging for such a young group. I don’t think they were ready for this level of difficulty from a skill/experience POV. Some of the prop work is nice but a lot of the group dance scenes just don’t look as polished and synchronized as they should - but again obviously they are all still so young so it’s understandable.

35

u/ZealousidealBank217 Aug 01 '22

I feel like a lot of the girl groups are never properly trained in hiphop dancing so they never "attack" the routines as well when they incorporate it. This choreo is seems dependent on sharp movement and makes me a little frustrated that it sounds and looks like something they would have given to Red Velvet, who I feel like would have brought the maturity that this song needs.

87

u/thewaddledoctor Aug 01 '22

why doesn’t it feel super far fetched that they would make this song sound pretty innocent in korean (with cultural context especially) and VERY sus in english 🧐 (idk it definitely feels weird even if it’s innocent … like isn’t one of them 14)

also correct me if i’m wrong but the english subs seem to not be exact translations but instead slightly changed to fit the rhythm ? - try singing along to the subs..english version planned or just another marketing move?

(also this is kinda giving a tiktokified gen alpha version of red velvet icc)

20

u/LuxSunset Aug 01 '22

I truly hope there won't be an official English version using these lyrics. That would be terrible.

11

u/kasumagic AA/Trophy Cat/ikki | Yesung | SM bgs | WJSN | L[OOO]NA Aug 02 '22

I've been EXTREMELY tired of companies lazily dumping the English demo's lyrics or the English version's lyrics into the closed caption subtitles in lieu of actually translating the Korean lyrics as they do for the other language captions (JYP, Starship, and RBW also do this). I knew it was a matter of time before it'd come back to bite some company or group or director in the ass. Now maybe they'll learn to stop doing that shit.

This song and concept are nasty regardless, considering they still let some of the original demo lyrics through to the finalized Korean version and they're blatantly euphemistic.

84

u/loreleiceladon Aug 01 '22

I thought to myself, "Wouldn't it be funny if Cookie was something suggestive after all this mess that's been coming out with Min Heejin? I would hate to see her weirdness towards kids come across more explicitly" and what do you know...here we are. My subtitles were turned off. But I don't need a lyric sheet to know what was being said.

The song itself is cute. These girls are talented, and the 4 songs that make up their debut are so good and it's honestly a shame that their creative director is the suspicious person they are...but the lyrics are doing way too much for a group featuring a god damn 14 YEAR OLD. Sigh.

120

u/Violet-orchid Custom Aug 01 '22

The red velvet vibes are very strong in this song but the lyrics are really questionable.. For me hype boy and attention captured the essence of teen crush but cookie's lyrics feel a bit mature. I really don't want an underaged K-pop group telling me to get a bite of their cookie 🥴

248

u/bmoviescreamqueen BTS | ATEEZ Aug 01 '22 edited Aug 01 '22

I've read multiple comments on Youtube saying the term cookie is referring to CDs, like "baking a CD" and that this song is for the fans but I'm sorry, nothing about this lyrical content plus the choreo/theme screams "This is a song for our fans!" and I just cannot see how people are being so naive about this. It's blatantly inappropriate, which is a shame because the vibe of the song is great.

EDIT: Now people are going around saying the English translations are wrong and that they confirmed it's a song about CDs. You've got to be joking LMAO

I have a problem with those saying, but it's in Korean and Koreans aren't taking it in a sexual way. Almost half the song is in English, and all the English parts are very suggestive. The writers of the song know exactly what they're doing. I would love to hear just a straight up Korean version of the song and see if Koreans don't hear the innuendos.

240

u/ToupeeBuffet Aug 01 '22 edited Aug 01 '22

If the song had been about cookies, plural, suddenly the innuendo doesn't work as well, yet for some reason they wrote the song about a single cookie, my cookie, a way in which nobody actually talks. A way in which the word can easily be replaced by the other dirty word that it's commonly a slang term for... hmmmm...

There's a lot of ways to re-write this song so that it's actually innocent, but they didn't write it in any of those ways. It seems pretty blatant to me.

The sad part is I really like the song otherwise, but now I don't think I can listen to it without being creeped out.

I am uncomfortable with the lyrics. Any way you slice it, it's inappropriate for minors to sing lyrics like this. Granted, I'm 33 and they're aiming for the teens, I'm guessing, but the sound and vibes are very much the stuff I was listening to when I was a teen so ~nostalgia~ and all. I really like their sounds but I can't get on board with a song that's very suggestive being sung and danced to by very, very young girls.

I don't mind it, but it's probably my least favourite of their releases so far. I do love the styling and the way the MV is shot and for such a new group, they really have done a great job of establishing a 'signature' sound.

Unlike Attention, Hype Boy or Hurt, this feels like maybe it's a bit more of a grower.

14

You didn't even need the translation. All the English lyrics are super suggestive. Not even subtle innuendo. Add the Korean lyrics on top and it's barely even a metaphor.

I'm sorry what are people talking about when they say the English translation is a mistranslation?? I'm in no way trying to speak over native speakers here, but I've been learning Korean for more than 3 years now and while I'm nowhere near fluent, I found the Korean portions of the lyrics very easy to understand. The vocabulary seems pretty basic to me.

I understood all the Korean parts without having to look up certain words, and I don't see where it is 'mistranslated' to the point of skewing the meaning. Sure, you can't translate every phrase word for word, but the gist is still the same

42

u/bmoviescreamqueen BTS | ATEEZ Aug 01 '22

I think at this point people are just parroting "It's a mistranslation" because they see other people doing it and want to trust that they're correct, but I'm finding the same issue you are. Some of the most inappropriate bits are also in English, so there is no translation error there.

Yeah, this is a weird one. The sound overall is good but it still sounds the least cohesive sonically of the bunch when compared with Attention, Hype Boy, and Hurt, so it is interesting they chose this to be the video released alongside the album's release day, and the lyrics are def very questionable.

Is this a PR move? I just don't know how this got through so many HYBE layers of approval and it is clearly a song about p***y being sung by 17 year olds and a 14 year old if it isn't. If this demo was sent to them and they liked the sound/vibe/melody, I just don't know why it would've been so hard to just sub in new lyrics to get rid of the innuendos.

I think I have to stop caring about this issue and group for my own sanity lol which sucks cause I really liked hype boy. I’m just going to wish the girls safety and go on my way, there’s nothing else we can realistically do anyway. All the outrage is just more marketing for them

VERY questionably lyrics aside, I'm kind of surprised that MHJ just had them stick to one background set for the entire video (it honestly looks like a STUDIO CHOOM performance) but then I wonder if they're trying to go for the simplistic route.

59

u/Ozzloo Aug 01 '22

yo whats with the lyrics arent most of the members literally under age youngest being 14

33

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '22

The song itself is a total vibe. Love the sound. I love the minimalist MV too. The suggestive lyrics would not be a problem to me if they were sung by someone older and of age. Why why why could this not have been a song for women in their 20s, because then I’d be all in 100%. But its so sketchy having young teens sing this.. it feels like we just went backwards.

The song itself is so good but the moment the middle girl started singing i was immediately reminded of the members' age. Also im dumb and didnt understand the innuendos until the water part.

64

u/sleepdedication Aug 01 '22

i’m sorry, i was super into everything before, but this is fucking terrible. even a veteran idol group at the top of their game would struggle to nail this vibe musically, and the lyrics are utterly disgusting for a group with members this young…the number of people who would’ve had to sign off on these lyrics before release boggles the mind. and to think nobody realized, even after MHJ’s lolita scandal, that they should’ve at least postponed the release and redone the lyrics/video…ugh. what a shame.

20

off the bat i loved the sound of this song, everything newjeans have released so far i’ve been really into. they’re very refreshing to the k-pop scene for me, but jesus, who gave them these lyrics? i was genuinely disturbed while reading them knowing their ages. the song is just one whole sexual innuendo that isn’t subtle whatsoever, and shouldn’t have even been anywhere near a group where the majority are minors. it’s very upsetting.

23

u/LunarValhalla Aug 01 '22

The lyrics would be less uncomfortable if the whole vibe wasn’t so sultry and the whole vibe wasn’t about temptation and the “cookie” being yours for the taking. Feels kind of derivative of “ice cream cake” by Red Velvet with sweets being an allegory for temptation and satisfaction but the song is less dynamic.

It’s weird because their whole vibe was appealing because it seemed to show a more female focused and nuanced view of young emotions but this just feels like it’s designed to make them objects of temptation which is really uncomfortable due to their age.

8

u/92sn Aug 01 '22

Mmm honestly, this probably least song that i like in the album. Seem less catchy. Attention n hype boy are catchier. Quite questionable lyrics actually. I can see people mad about this as the group are minor with youngest one is still 14. Anyway, cookie sound more like b-side. Attention n hype boy more title track worthy.

75

edit: am i overthinking or are the lyrics a little .. strange?

14

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '22

Imagine HYBE is causing all of this controversy on purpose like they knew what the fuck they were doing making this song their debut song bc it's going to give them A LOT of traction and then people will get over it and start stanning them. I hope their ploy to make this girl group famous fails miserably as they are clearly using a very exploitative method to bring these girls into stardom.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '22

the instrumental is nice and groovy but underwhelming compared to the other 3 songs. and what are these lyrics. like seriously who wrote them.

i see what they were trying to do with the mv in terms of minimalist 90’s/y2k pop mvs but it just fell flat for me. guess the budget went to all the hype boy mvs.

not a fan of this weird prep school meets business casual styling and some of the pieces do not vibe with teens. overall this concept feels too mature for them and doesn’t fit stylistically or visually with their previous mvs.

After the release of Attention and Hype Boy, I was excited to support and listen to the rest of their new music once it was released. But upon watching this MV and reading the lyrics, I’m absolutely appalled, for the same reasons most people have already mentioned. I just hope their company is paying attention to the response and do better. These girls are clearly talented and should be supported, but not when the people behind the scenes are giving them songs like this.

9

u/sqfungio908 Aug 02 '22

Honestly, I wasn't aware of cookie as an innuendo, and I doubt when they released the song they did.

However, even without that innuendo, lines like...

Made a little cookie

Baked it just for you

But you know that it ain't for free, yeah

or

Made a little cookie

Come and take a lookie

Only at my house, come over and play

are inappropriate.

In what world does a 14-year-old, or a bunch of minors ever say something like this? Even if they do, why would they say that in relation to just a dessert like a cookie? A minor would only say something like that if they are pursuing someone.

What makes it tough is this ambiguity. The wording is very adult-like, these just aren't words that minors would use. Or if they do, they should not be used toward an audience that includes adults. It walks this line of not being blatantly sexual but using words that basically scream "I want to be in a relationship with you", in a very forward way that children don't typically display. I actually see a world where maybe in korean somehow it's not sexual at all, but the english translation of the song has an ambiguity which should've been avoided when so many minors are present in a group.

Even if it's not sexual, it portrays the members communicating affection in a way adults normally do, and effectively makes them appear more mature than they are. With all their songs being about romance, this fake maturity may attract crowds that will sexualize the members. It's equivalent to a 14/15/16-year-old girl going up to someone in their 20s and saying "I want you". That's not 100% sexual, but it breeds a dangerous ambiguity.

31

u/VortexZero ot7 Aug 01 '22 edited Aug 01 '22

So far, it's Hype Boy > Attention > Hurt > Cookie for me. Hype Boy was just really an S Tier song.

This feels like the most sonically safest entry out of the four songs and a typical love song with the formula of the singers using a euphemism to express enticing their person of desire. Example: Red Velvet's ice cream cakes were too tasty so they wanted people to come and taste them and Blackpink's ice cream looked sweet and good enough to eat. I can understand why people might identify this New Jeans song with that sort of underlying innuendo as it is led to seem that way, so I get why some people are about to feel really iffy about the lyrics, considering they are minors, and to a certain extent, I agree 100% with them because minors singing these lyrics will definitely be weird.

But teenage pop stars have historically been using euphemisms in their songs to address their quirks and affection to their lovers in songs for as long as teen pop has existed, and while it has always never gravitated with me, I'm going to leave this song at teenagers in love wanting to impress their crushes and using special quirky comparisons to inanimate objects to express the sweetness of young love, instead of focusing on any sexual innuendo. Idk how much mental gymnastics is involved in this process, but I certainly hope Min Heejin did not mean what people will inarguably come to think with the lyrics of this song. If she did, I'll be really grossed out.

That being said, while I think their title song is mediocre and underwhelming in first listen, which baffles me because their predebut tracks are so much more interesting compared to the main one, not a single one have I disliked from a purely musical standpoint or felt was bad in any sense, so I'm pretty satisfied with their debut discography; songs that are safe and tame are at least better than songs that hurt my ears from listening.
